Hi Indie Hackers,
Quick update on Obolus. Since my last post, I took a massive detour that I didn’t plan for, but it ended up being my biggest growth lever so far.
The Pivot to "Data Porn" While building Obolus (a tool to compare global purchasing power), I realized people don't just want to see their own taxes—they want to see the "Social Contract." They want to know: “Where exactly does my 42% tax rate in Germany actually go?”
So, I spent over 40 hours manually mapping the 2026 German Federal Budget into an interactive Sankey diagram.
The Scale: 5,423 individual line items.
The Solution: A multi-level drill-down (because showing 5,000 lines at once is just a wall of noise).
The Reddit Spike (1,000+ Users) I posted the visualization on /r/finanzen. Reddit is a tough crowd; they smell "marketing speech" from a mile away and usually downvote it to oblivion.
But here’s the thing: Data-hungry users don't want a pitch, they want depth. I skipped the sales talk, shared the raw data visualization, and the community loved it. It resulted in a spike of over 1,000 active users in a single day and some of the best feedback I’ve received so far (including a deep dive into the specific PAP tax logic that I hadn't even considered in that detail before).
What I learned:
Transparency > Marketing: In the finance niche, showing the "how" and the raw data builds more trust than any landing page headline.
Visualizing Complexity is a Product in itself: Sometimes the "side feature" (the budget map) proves the value of the main product (the tax calculator) better than words can.
You can see the result of those 40 hours here: www.obolusfinanz.de/en/bundeshaushalt
I’d love your take on this: Have you ever built a "side-tool" or a visualization that unexpectedly became your main traffic driver? And for the finance geeks here: does the drill-down feel intuitive or is it still too much data at once? (Sorry for the heavy German in the federal budget sankey)
Looking forward to your thoughts!
