Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Jan 31st)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

If you prefer audio to reading, check out the Indie Hackers Podcast Network and find a show you like.

Now is the best time to start.

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

Good luck!

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post a question in the Meta group, or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

    Hey,
Olsch here :) I'm a freelance web developer (focused on the Vue frontend technology mostly) - I've done great lately and I now want to boostrap online businesses.
The first difficulty I want to overcome is that I have too many ideas and don't know how to assess which ones have potential and which one don't.

    1. 2

Hey Olsch! Also a new member of this community. I'm a freelance strategy consultant and have worked in mgmt consulting and in biz ops / strategy for early stage startups in the past. New venture assessment is my sweet spot - would love to chat if you're interested. Email in my profile!

    2. 1

Hey love to talk about your ideas and discuss them together.

    3. 1

      Hi Olsch,
I do SEO, search engine optimization. If you need any information in this area, just ask.

      1. 1

This is what Google says about SEO: 30-second summary:
SEO is without a doubt the most cost-effective channel for enterprises today.
SEO also adds incremental value in a number of different ways.
It helps maintain brand equity, helps inform product and sales.
SEO can also be used as a PR channel and vice-versa.
From consumer behavior trends to market and demand volatility, search behavior can provide the data businesses need to understand market drivers and pivot in real-time.
SEO adds value by providing a model for continuous digital improvement of the user (customer) online experience.

      2. 1

        Thank you :)

We recently launched our beta version in the UK and are also available in the US - very excited to see what models people implement with our tech!

      1. 1

Thanks Jack! Sent you an email :)

  8. 3

Hello, name is Mike. 30+ years in tech, now working on two projects, one for a client one for myself. Client is focused on family law and my project is an app (web first) for managing disruptions. Our connected world both digitally and physically needs a way to communicate whats available and what isn't so we don't waste time. Idea born from loosing power at the house and wasting 30 minutes trying to figure out if it was just my house, neighbourhood or something larger. It's a service I wish existed, so I'm going to build it.

    1. 1

I love that idea! I am similarly working on a project inspired by a lack of accessibility to key information/data. I a big part of the struggle has been wrangling the data from across a myriad of sources. A lot of the sources don't have an API so I have had to get creative. Have you run into similar challenges with your project or is all the data you need available from public APIs?

      1. 1

Hello @btyler, in the past (because i've been toying with this idea in one form or another) I'd look for public API as "feed" i can hook into, sift, and pull what is relevant. I stopped. Every source has some "difficulty" and I end up spending my time wrangling the exceptions. Beyond that is the overall strategy, If I'm feeding at their source, I'm beholden to them, fine when starting, problem later. So I'm working on some magical mix of crowd sourcing behaviour and various maps providers for the ingestion. It's just me, and I'm no expert so it's a lot of trial and error to carve something that is useful. Right now I'm just starting to work on machine learning and sorely need help understanding the heuristics around human behaviour, data and what it means when someone says something is available or not... Hard but fun stuff. Soooo many dead ends and digging myself back out of the rabbit hole... I'm an over thinker which does NOT help at ALL. :)

        1. 1

I can relate! What map providers are you working with? I am a huge map nerd and and always love learning more.

          1. 1

Google for now, but need to expand. Trying to build so the mapping module can easily be decoupled.

    Hi, I'm Cosmin.
I'm a full-stack web developer from Cluj, Romania and for years now I've been interested in building a SaaS company that can make an impact in a market niche. Over 15 years ago I started a small dev agency with my best friend and used some of the income from that to build a few side projects together, but didn't have much success with them.
Now the agency I started is fully remove, working mostly with freelancers and startups. Through that I was able to see and help many startups improve and grow their technical teams, but never really had the chance to work on one of my own where I could learn all the hard parts of building a SaaS, beyond the technical side. I want to change that.
I've listened to IndieHackers for a while now and decided to finally join and start sharing the things I work on in my free time.

  47. 1

LinkedIn lead gen using a proprietary software I built which allows me to track and push interested leads into clients CRM thus allowing me to charge 100% based on performance rather than retainers. want to explore the idea of using my platform to raise some funding for startups through LinkedIn (my business wasnโ€™t capital intensive to require me to raise money) Figured this would be a good place start to find some great startups. Hi all!

My name is Ben Tyler and I am a full stack developer, map guy, skiier, trail runner, and music blogger. I love building things related to the outdoors, civic/gov tech, music, natural resource management, and productivity.

I have three irons in the fire right now that I will introduce below. My goals with all three centers around providing tools that can help people make more informed decisions and to develop a more passive income stream(s) to support my family.

    Avy App (https://avy-app.netlify.app/):

    • A collection of backcountry ski/snowboard trip planning tools designed to help keep you safe and informed.

    Scoped (https://gum.co/scoped)

    • A scoping and budget planning tool that does most of the work for you. This Google Sheet template streamlines and automates the process of developing cost estimates when bidding on a project.

    Streamster (https://github.com/streamster/streamster)

    • Streamster is a JavaScript library designed to make working with natural resource related APIs simpler. There are a slew of awesome public APIs out there for things like water, air, and snow, but they all vary significantly in terms of ease of use.

Hi Tamar. Good idea for startup =)

  61. 1

Hey, I'm Konstantin from Germany. I have run my own business since I'm 16 (now almost 40). Most of the time, I do IT services and software development for customers. Web/Mail Hosting was the beginning of this journey, later building websites for customers, etc.
I had to build up expertise in email hosting through these years as it got harder and harder. Fighting spam, getting user accounts hacked and spam through their accounts, managing reputation. If you tried it, you know what I'm talking about.
As the number of servers grew and more and better spam systems passed my "lines of defense", I had to do something about it - mostly the recurring spam user have seen over and over again. That was when I've started to analyze the traffic based on IPs, networks, providers, etc. What I've found were professional providers, distributed systems.
What I needed was a blacklist and a whitelist I could manage myself. The results were terrific.
Years later, the management of these lists got more and more complex. That's why I've started to build a service I could use for myself and my customers. Since last year this child has a name. It was cold MailMum.
I joined IndieHackers to make MailMum my full-time project. I'm looking for community like-minded business bootstrappers to focus and get this up the ground.

    Hi, my name is jasper.

Hello! I am Alex. I've been a software engineer for almost 6 years now. I'm working on side projects right now more as a hobby and to learn stuff than as a viable long term plan. I'm hoping this community gives me the inspiration and guidance to explore further!

    1. 2

Nice man, what kind of side projects are you working on?

      1. 1

I used to try out random stuff, more to experiment with things I wanted to learn. Off late, I've been working more on seeing things through and making my projects something others can use as well.

I released this in mid-2020. It's an add-on for the English Premier League's fantasy football game. https://draftnik.cc/

I'm on the final stretch of another project right now. It's a Chrome extension to save tweets as your new tab page. I'm waiting for the extension to go live on the Chrome store, and I'm also working on the landing page right now. ๐Ÿ˜„

  65. 1

I'm about a year into learning web development. Working on my first web app to go on a resume. If something else comes out of it, then great.
The web app is called twitleague and is a twitter clone, but for recreational sports leagues/teams (think local little league baseball or football teams all the way to professional leagues/teams):
    https://twitleague-next-js.vercel.app/

Let me know if what you think and if you would like to help on this project.

I use Kotlin, Dart (Flutter) but also enjoy web development with ReactJS. I'm here to explore other projects and eventually find someone with similar passions and projects. Thanks!

  68. 1

Hello! I've been following the indie hacking community for at least 10 years (bought "start small, stay small" back then), but never really committed myself to launching a product. I'm inspired by all the great stories on the indie hackers podcast and just the knowledge of what a little bit of technology can do when applied to the right problem. One of my goals is to make $1 on the internet this year.

I have 15+ years of working in software (mostly for a large financial services company), and through that I've realized that technology is the easy part :-)

    Hi everyone !

Dx here, I have the entrepreneurial spirit but have never taken the plunge. I have been close but my propensity for due diligence has impeded me or maybe it has saved me.

I'm starting a side project code name "Learn Together" (Looking for a better name).
Focus of this project is to help people find accountability partner.

    Thanks.

  70. 1

    Hey Everyone,
I'm currently in university on track for law school but I started a little side project a few months back that i've begun to put more and more time into and have started forming it into an automation saas, automating parts of the filing process for bankruptcy lawyers.
I'm hoping to inspire myself with all of your stories and get some feedback as I go along and post updates. My work right now is mostly troublshooting google sheets formulas, google app scripting and the UX and design for the front end. Also still very unsure about my saas pricing .

    Hey there, Indie Hackers ๐Ÿ‘‹
I'm Mark, from US - New York area. I've been in tech for quite some time with all sorts of things like web architecture, servers, coding, etc. I've been working on a few startup ideas and I'd like to get some traction - who does not want to :) I signed up cause I'd like to network with people in the same boat as me and more and possibly collab on some ideas and learn new things. I'm always happy to help others find solutions and succeed in life.

  72. 1

Hi folks, I'm an indy web developer and consultant. I did a stint at Lambda school where I learned the full stack (React, REST API with Node.js). I have an idea for a SaaS app that I'd like to build with Next.js. Other than that, I'm looking forward to connecting with other talented devs. Aloha.

Being part of a small team at a SaaS startup (airfocus), I'll use every chance I get to absorb knowledge about growth, while getting inspired by founders and marketers. My main areas of expertise are inbound and automation with a sprinkle of ads. I also like to write about product, marketing and the saas landscape. It's therapeutic.

It's a website where I share mosaics that I build using a construction toy called Plus-Plus (check out their website if you don't know about it: https://plus-plus.com/). The project is already live (https://mosaics.plus), although I haven't put much effort on promoting it yet. I've been busy trying to create content and find an audience. I'm interested in finding ways to make the project financially sustainable without external funding.
Great to be part of this community!

Hey All! John here! I am the founder of the very recently launched Recamov (recamov.com) - a remote job board (yep, another one!) - but I want to build it into what people actually need rather than what they are given. So, visit the site, if you have any remote jobs please post and give me a helping hand :) , read our cool blog articles and let me know what YOU wish to see in a remote job site, what features, tools, article topics etc tickle your fancy. I really hope to share my progress with all of you and that you are part of this journey with me.
Been a regular visitor over the year to the site, so I have no doubt being part of the indiehacker community is going to be just....awesome! :)
@rosiesherry - any tips on how to get feedback here would be appreciated :)

Hello all. I am a Danish web developer / marketeer. For the last 8 years I have had my own one man web agency, running Google Ads & building WordPress sites. I have in the process built a large base of recurring revenue with hosting and maintenance, and also build one digital training product. Glad to announce that I can live of that alone, and don't have to work for clients anymore. I am happy to part of this great community :)

  85. 1

Hi everyone! I'm Iron (yes real name, i'm dutch :), I have spent most of my time recently in sales automation. So I'm technically not an 'indie hacker'... Currently, im building automated sales funnels for B2B clients, but wanting to start my own online business/product. Love the content everyone is producing here, but I find it difficult to come out of the 'motion' phase and get into the 'action' phase as I have no idea where to start. Would love to have a chat! See email in my profile! Especially, if I can help you build an outbound sales strategy, just send me a message. Would love to help!

And if you happen to need live information sharing in your projects (like Google Docs or Figma), give me a shout โ€“ I know a lot about the options!

Both are in constant development, so I've joined here as a place to share how that process goes, but also to see other peoples work.

  97. 1

Hey everyone, been a long-time listener of the Indie Hackers podcast and a member of this site but I'm just now ready to take the initial steps towards creating my own profitable business/product.

I'm a software engineer by way of majoring in CS to dropping out then attending a coding bootcamp. I've always been a fan of creating side projects that solve my own issues but am now interested in helping others using my technical abilities.

As a member of the Indie Hackers community, I'm mostly looking to learn as much as I can in the areas I'm less knowledgable in, namely sales/marketing, as well as supporting likeminded makers pursuing similar endeavors.

  98. 1

Hi. My name is Arun. I'm a founder of a successful YC-funded company that raised its Series-B last year. It's been a long time since I worked on something new from the ground up and I've been following IH for years.

Hi, I'm Jack. I've been building iOS apps and web applications for nearly 10 years. I spent a few years at the beginning of that decade doing technology consulting and as a business analyst, then the last few years of that decade managing teams of engineers.

At the end of 2020 I quit my job to take my side project on full-time which is exciting! That project is Gratsi โ€” a platform for giving and receiving contactless tips, reducing the industry and workers (and customers) reliance on cash. You can check it out here.

I've been aware of the great community on Indie Hackers for a few years now but this week felt like the week to jump in and join ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello CM here,
3-time entrepreneur building products over the past 18 years. I have a Computer Science background and have spent most of the past 21 years working in Cyber Security building SaaS platforms and teams to bring those ideas and solutions to market in over 80 countries.

My smallest business had 30K users in 2005 when It ran its course and my largest has 16MM users still active when I exited the business in 2018. The larger business was VC funded from early days and I made many mistakes along the way.

Today Iโ€™m building a new SaaS business around schedule management, meeting templated workflow including note taking (adgenda, min's, actions etc) aimed at SMEโ€™s

I want to see if I can bring this new business to life using a remote only approach and bootstrap it all the way to my first 0-10K users!

Hi guys! My name is Javier.
I am a software engineer with some years of experience in e-commerce & sales. I am constantly building new things and working on side projects. The reason why I want to be part of this great community is to learn from others what it really takes to build a successful startup from the ground-up, with a bigger focus on marketing and other non-technical skills I haven't had the chance to develop yet. My goal for this year is to be able to get something up and running with at least 1 paid user!
    Happy to chat anytime :)

  133. 1

    Hello,

I'm a Belgian freelancer trying to start up my own web dev business.

  134. 1

    Hi Everyone,

Excited to join this group, I just happened across it while searching for a SaaS scaffolding for my first SaaS project.

I'm a life-long hobby programmer who runs a (non-software) small business. I initially started school for computer science but school was never a good format for me. Life happened, I didn't finish my degree, and I ended up in a non-tech field.

I recently have had certain growing pains in my business which has prompted me to search existing solutions, and after not being satisfied with the available offerings in the small business price-range I'm now planning my own SaaS solution.

    My goals are:

    1. Develop and test my SaaS solution within my existing business
    2. Leverage it to help grow that business and position it well for a sale.
    3. Mature the software during the previous stages and offer it to similar small businesses

Not sure how much detail to get into here, if I'm inspired I'll write up some posts with specifics of the software and my plans as I make them.

    Thanks for having me!

  135. 1

Hello there, new here but not new as an entrepreneur. I am building can't poster with a twist, but still in idea stage.

Hello Iโ€™m Sid, have spent most of my working life in Enteprise SaaS. A personal family event made me take a 1 year long sabbatical (just ended!). Started a podcast (The Indian Dream) in June last year to understand how profitable businesses have been built in India! Micro-SaaS was one of the things we went deeper into.

Ended the sabbatical and trying my best to not go back to a job. Looking to acquire a micro-saas business and scale it. Would love to chat with anyone who has experience in acquisition of micro-saas.

Looking forward to helping others where I can and being part of this community.

Hi I'm Sharon. I've been listening to the Indie Hackers podcast for a while now and created an account on here two years ago when I first started my company Nomadic Labs, but this is my first post!

We started the company planning to do consulting work to fund our own product development, but what ended up happening is that the consulting took up all of our time and we never seemed to get around to the product development part.

So this year we've decided to refocus and recommit ourselves to our original goal, start saying "no" to new clients, and actually build something for ourselves. Let's see if year 3 is the year we do it!

Using my mobile and web app I am looking to create a global challenge to inspire people to be more active spending more time outdoors connecting families, communities - have some fun and feel the better for it. This is to seed a platform I created offering mobile apps used in challenge and for trail and adventure mapping. Be great to extend and connect with other like minded people across the community.

    Hey I am Emad,

I am a developer and consultant. I have always been thinking of starting my own bootstrapped SaaS business.

I haven't built anything yet as I haven't found the right idea/niche, or maybe I am just magnifying every drawback of every idea I find :D.

I hope I will be inspired by this welcoming and active community.

    Cheers!

Hey Rosie Sherry, I'm Kristy. Nice to meet you! So grateful for this amazing community! I've been reading IndieHacker content for a while and finally decided to participate, contribute, and collaborate in the community. A little about me: I've been ghostwriting for others and running content marketing campaigns for companies for a long time, but I'm finally deciding to be visible and do for myself what I've done for others. Small steps forward... :)

I've been the founder and sole full time employee of my business Soltech LLC for 3 years now.

Looking to rebuild our business pretty much from the ground up! Would love any input and advice. Specifically on how to set up your systems for rapid growth, and development.

Hey! My name's Tom and I work for a lab equipment leasing company that specializes in clinical and diagnostic instruments for biotech startups. Our approach to running a business is very different than any other leasing company, however. For one thing, it's extremely digitally-focused, which is not as common as you'd think among other equipment lessors (Or maybe that's exactly what you would think). I currently wear a lot of hats, but my role mainly pertains to content marketing (lots of blogging) and market analysis. Excited to be part of the community.

    1. 1

      That is cool!

    Hey all, I'm Andrew!

After years of lurking I'm taking the plunge to turn some side projects into a business, starting with redditreads.com

    Hi all ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ

My name is Geronimo and I'm a digital product designer, entrepreneur, and cook.

This year I'm working on a side project of launching a food pop-up! I'm aiming to serve Filipino plant-forward dishes to highlight my culture and deliver a healthier and more modern take on the food. I'm currently in the recipe development stage.

I'm here because I love the concept of building in the open, would love to get connected to any resources or experts, and am gernally excited to share my resources/feedback for other people's projects as well!

    1. 1

      Wow cool! good luck!

Hello I am CP! Nice to see you guys. I am currently building a series of side projects under different sub domains on https://lation.app
Lation stands for L___ ___ation, where the placeholders could be Lazy, Life, automATION, or stATION, respectively.
Hope I can monetize my apps soon.

    1. 2

I will say that most truly lazy people don't really care about making life easier, unfortunately. But I wish you the best of luck!

      1. 2

        Thanks for the feedback!
I think I myself am a lazy guy who needs such tool XD

        1. 2

HAha well, then you aren't too lazy if you're building it. Good luck on it!

Hi everyone! I'm Robby, and I'm working on an app that helps teams spend less time in meetings by moving status updates, announcements, and more to asynchronous video messages. It's a problem I struggled with at my last job, and now I'm taking some time off and trying to figure out if there's a sustainable product to be built.

Looking forward to being part of the community!

    Hello!
I am currently a masters student in economics and working on some side projects on how how to study for quantitative subjects and how to make daily tasks for students more efficient and effective! I'm not sure where it will take me but I decided to join to meet some new people and share my ideas so they can hopefully grow!

  177. 1

Hello Cris, and I'm fairly new to the Indie world, but I'm here to learn and start building!

  178. 1

Hey! I'm Sergio (@eiprol), and I've been developing Apps and games, solo and with my brother, for the last 6 years. Last year (Sorry, I mean two years ago; 2020 kind of never happened for me!) a project of mine went viral due to Jack Dorsey Tweeting about it tippin.me, but I couldn't turn it into anything profitable, so went back to designing games.

It was both a great and a really exhausting/stressing/frustrating experience that made me quit of building things for a while, but I'm finally back on track.

2021 is the year I keep on building and releasing ๐Ÿš€

Hi. I'm Paul. I've run my one man company since 1985. Freelancer and indie dev. coFounded a few small startups. Back in 1990s was CTO of a venture backed startup. Wouldn't repeat venture backed. Feel fortunate to have accumulated a few (small) incomes. Still freelancing, mainly for same client developing R&D prototypes. No desire to retire. Still learning every day. Rebooting indie dev after a break following last startup which flamed out. Project one is to revamp iOS App + SaaS after App fell off the App Store - same users, new insight, new tech. Listening to inspiring Indie Podcasts during my daily walk.

  208. 1

Hi everyone :) I'm new to this site, and also pretty new to this concept. I've been developing software at FANG for ~10 years at this point, and I am now jumping into creating my first product right now. I've realized that there is actually a lot of work to do even for someone wanting to setup a super-simple webapp (API and static content, basic platform services like a database). A lot of this could be much simpler with some opinionated setups that would work for 50%+ people -- so I'm making it! ๐Ÿ˜„

Glad to have found a community like this :)

    Wow, what a brilliant idea.....
