Welcome to Indie Hackers! πŸ‘‹ (Week of Jan 5th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome!

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community for people building profitable Internet businesses. The key word here is "community" β€” to get the most out of IH, you'll need to speak with and learn from other IHers. Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. πŸ‘ˆ

Just say a few words about who you are and why you're here. What do you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020?

I encourage you to respond to others as well.

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend starting by reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible and the huge variety of paths that different people take.

(@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing.)

Every founder begins with a different level of knowledge, but learning never ends. It's good to do a little bit of reading upfront, but don't get stuck in a pure learning phase for too long and let that hold you back!

Next, get started!

Once you've got a little knowledge under your belt, the best way to learn is to do. And there's no better time to do than right now.

Check out our "Start" page page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you on your way.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but I hope it helps you get started!

If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and share your goals below! πŸ€—

I have over 25 years of software/hardware experience and happy to share knowledge and ideas.

  5. 2

Hey I'm a web developer I want to create my portfolio to show my past work, launch my social media accounts for professional services this year and make at least three static web pages or small projects aside from my job.

Hi, I'm a startup CTO currently, and I think after many years (and a failed bootstrapped startup already) what I want has finally become clear. A bootstrapped lifestyle business, small, ideally if I could reach ~25k MRR I would feel like I have truly achieved something which right now feels impossible. I'm here to learn how to get there.

  9. 2

Hi! I am an aspiring data scientist and I would love to get into product development and launch my own startup in the near future.

  10. 2

Hello! I work in oil and gas as a programmer but my background is in petroleum engineering. the place I live is far away from a bustling tech scene so I decided to inject myself into the community through a Podcast I host. My passion is innovating with code and doing interviews with other people in the community to help perpetuate innovative thoughts. My entire inspiration driving me at this point is choosing to refuse living a normal life. ✌️

I look forward to contributing on this platform, feel free to connect with me.

    1. 1

Hey Dude ! I study Chemical Engineering at University & i'm slightly confused about what to do ?!?
      Hope all is Well !

  11. 2

Family dad, following a "normal" job and looking for inspiration and feedback regarding sustainable buisness ideas.

Hello everyone, I'm a university student trying to pay my bills by designing and building websites for startups and businesses. My goals for this year is to have a small audience and at least a project per month.

Hi, everyone! I'm a mainframe developer, would like to change my jobs to web development. I'm new to web development, but I've released my first web app(django-starchart.herokuapp.com) last month as a side project. I would like to connect with highly motivated people here.

Hi fellas, I am a Ruby on Rails backend developer with more than 8+ years of experience including 4+ years as a remote developer.

I am looking for my next remote job/work/contract as my last contract is just completed. Thanks!

  18. 1

Hey guys, I have just registered and got a little lost, but trying to follow the steps (from start) to see where they lead me.

I have been working for big corps for almost 30 years now, 17 on Brasil, 13 here is the US.
I have got to the point were now I wanna grow my "moonlight side", do more for myself instead of helping my already RICH and SUCCESSFUL employers get even more money.

My plan for 2020 is to open a dev-for-hire company focusing on mobile/web development.
Out pitch would be an MPV product ready in 3 months.
I'm sure that we could accomplish that, just do not know yet how to communicate to some what an MVP is. I've seen companies going after an MPV as if the MPV is the end goal.

Anyway, I've learned a LOT on my tenure as a DEV/architect/lead/scrum master on my jobs, so I'm here to share and learn.

Some details about me can be found here:

Team members with non-tech backgrounds can access these dashboards to monitor customers’ info without being concerned with underlying technical details. This β€˜Micro-saas’ product is intended for startups at an early stage or with a small team.

Hey friends, I'm a growth marketer πŸš€ looking to offer bite-sized UX / CRO / analytics tips to a broader community than "1-2 clients at a time" 😁

  32. 1

Hello everyone. For most of my life I have been a regular everyday normal guy working in Customer Rep jobs. Last year, exactly 28.01.2019 I decided to take career in my own hands and learn a skill that is marketable, scale-able and will allow me to build my own business. Also I was thinking, why should I not know anything about programming if we are going into tokenization era. That is why I started coding. I jumped straight into JavaScript and with the help of Team Tree House (a fantastic web resource for beginners) I managed to find a startup that wanted to hire me after just 3 months of learning programming. Exactly on 15.04.2019 I started my first job as a Software Developer.

I was so fucking proud of myself! I accomplished something I was afraid of in just 4 months of actually putting the work.

Now the point of the story is, I quickly realized that having this skill (of programming) I will be better of going my own way. Why? Because you are not limited with any contract. Nobody puts a price tag on your skills and yourself! Just think about it! How limiting a salary is, limiting your creativity. Making you fall into comfort zone and grow with the minimum speed possible.

This year I am starting a YouTube channel around programming, how to get into the industry, why starting programming is the right thing to do if you are changing careers etc.

Anyone willing to give advice on how to start that is very welcome!

  33. 1

Hello, i'm a seo specialist launching a new project called digital sith. And my goal is to get my first 10 clients .

  46. 1

    Hi there,
I'm the founder of EvenCart (https://www.evencart.com) the next generation eCommerce software. I'm hear to learn about marketing tactics to promote the product. Being more into technical, my knowledge to marketing is limited to Google and Facebook ads and blogging and so I'm hear to break those barriers.

    1. 1

      Nice product. I like it.

What I have learned from ClickFunnels is that the best advertisement is warm referral, rewarding affiliate program. Try maybe following Rusell's strategy.

Also, if you want to promote your product you have to be everywhere on the web. Your blog is just few pages long. You need to have review websites including you in their reviews. People will come organically.

      1. 1

Thanks. One question though. How do you approach review websites or authors to write about your product? I understand that organic marketing is what will bring the popularity to the product but right now why would a reviewer feel the need to invest his or her time in the product?

        1. 2

Hmm, If I were a reviewer and were supposed to write an article on Top 10 best e-commerce platforms I would include those platforms that can bring me affiliate commissions.

    2. 1

How can your product compete with Shopify ?

      1. 1

        Hi,
Shopify is a cloud service, while ours is distributed as a self hosted solution. This is better option when one wishes to customize the software according to one's preferences. Also, because the product is developed more like a CMS and API generation in mind, we may sell source code of the product to the companies who may wish to

        a.) Setup their customized store
b.) Setup stores for their clients
c.) Have their own customized web app (not necessarily an eCommerce store) built on top of EvenCart core.
d.)Want to develop an APP that exposes API for clients to consume.

We are though open for suggestions and feedback.

  47. 1

Hello, i have been a teacher for 5years, decided to try other things, online marketing. Still learning, would be glad to connect with others and share ideas.

  48. 1

Hey. I'm looking to connect with other entrepreneurs and learn about the online startup world.

  49. 1

Hello, I'm a web developer who's been full-time employed for over 10yrs. I'm getting really burned out on 9-5 work and trying to figure out a ways to earn a living without working for others.

My passion is creating things, I really like the process of going from idea to physical / virtual concept. I finally have some ideas I think might be worth something and I'm having a lot of trouble being diligent enough / not persevering against discouragement. I've honestly been really depressed lately and its making it really hard to actualize on the hopes / dreams I have.

I am finally seeing a mental health professional and getting therapy (for the first time in my life) but I still really struggle with giving myself credit and not being too hard on myself when things fail or don't go how I wanted.

I am hoping by posting project updates and asking some questions here I can begin to validate my business ideas and hopefully find a way to put some accountability behind my ambitions.

    1. 1

Hey man, I am happy to hear that you are making steps to get out of the zone you are in now. Remember, life consists of phases. This phase will pass, whatever it is! You WILL get out of it! For me beginning of the year is difficult always, but what I tend to do is to really give myself the time TO WRITE DOWN ON A PIECE OF PAPER MY GOALS. This is really important. Do you have that?

Another really important measure is READING. This forum is perfect for that, because you dont have to read some random books to keep you motivated. You can read other peoples sucess stories and that will probably make you jealous at start but will give you the necessary kick to start and then motivate you further.

Dont give up man! Keep going, I am on the same road!

Hi IH! I'm a firmware engineer working on networking technology. I've got plenty of tech experience on full-stack development on a couple frameworks, lots of embedded experience, and generally pretty comfortable with tech. But there is always more to learn and maybe some I can contribute. I am poking around to see what it would take to truly learn the business side and turn some of my pet projects into something profitable.

    1. 1

Hi, I am a network engineer and always disturb our Firmware Engineer to fix a bug and release it soon than expected. DO you know the Federal Government is obligated to give small businesses some contracts by law? it may be worhtwhile to see if some of your pet projects fits their needs

      1. 1

No I had no idea! Thank you I'll have to look into that. I should have been more specific though. Right now, I work for someone else as a firmware engineer for my day job. Got a few projects I'm working on now that I will post about to validate soon. Just want to get through some of the really basic bugs to make sure it's even mildly viable and also learn from some of the content already on this platform first. Thank you for your input!

Hello IH world! Former 6th grade teacher here who grew frustrated with the lack of creative opportunities for 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th grade students. I created Story Squad to give kids a chance to team up and publish creative stories/comics/illustrations in a gamified, points-based app. We also run FREE "Story Contests" to get kids writing on the weekends (on Twitter: @story_hq). If you're a parent, I'd absolutely love to chat about your kiddos' creativity as well as how you monitor / regulate their screen-time when home. :)

Thanks to this enchanted-seeming community of Indie Hackers for sharing so much knowledge and support. I'm thrilled to be able to help others in any way I can as well as learn from your bootstrapping experiences. All my best for a happy, healthy, & prosperous 2020!

Hi there! I'm an engineer who wants to check what smart people do these days... :)

  93. 1

First off @rosiesherry I love what you and team have built. Often it feels so isolating to build in a vacuum. To have a quality community like this is #epic. So happy to have "stumbled upon" your website. My goals this year: Launch the innovate commerce platform (that I built) that champions best in class independent brands (as an iOS app first, with a fast follow to a responsive website). Do this with sustainable power and build a moat. I am an expert in branding, storytelling and community building. I am also looking for the right technical co-founder, whether that is a rockstar product manger, a talented UX / UI designer with a deep understanding of users and testing, or a developer who is interested not only in code, but leading a team (and not all are, I get it). The co-founder can live anywhere. Thank you. Atlas7 from NYC

Hi all, I've been developing my product for the past 1 year, quit my job and go full time for 8 months by now. It's a product that helps you clean messy data easier by keeping track of and comparing data. Hopefully I will be able to unveil it in a couple months when it enter beta and I've worked out initial offerings.

thanks and can I want to become cybersecurity professional and I wanted to know what I need to do?

      1. 1

It depends on what part of cybersecurity you are interested in. Generally cybersecurity professionals have technical backgrounds, but the industry is realizing nontechnical backgrounds are also important. You can find some information on udemy, or cybrary. They have some training courses around understanding cybersecurity and network security.

Not sure if you are in the US but here is a overview of the different areas of cybersecurity:
