Most tools I've seen from "classic" indiehacker types (e.g. Rob Walling, Justin Jackson, etc) tend to be way overpriced for my needs and aimed more at businesses past the indie stage. In general, I tend to spend on education first and tools have to pass a strict ROI test.

Right! I've been meaning to write an update for IH!
It's pretty demanding. You really have to put in the work.
The first half is on studying and understanding your customers. I went through the exercises with a brand new audience and topic (on the side from Alchemist Camp) and got the beginnings of a good email list and dev.to following! I'm going to start bringing in some of the same practices for Alchemist Camp.
The second part of the course is on the business side. I'm only a little way into it and progress has slowed because I still have to remember / keep working at what's in the first part. I suspect part 2 will help me grow my revenue considerably. I'll post further updates later!
