Founders usually make their Product Hunt launches flop. Not because the product is bad, but because founders make the same avoidable mistakes. I’ve seen it happen dozens of times. Here’s the straight talk on what goes wrong and how to fix it.
- "I’ll Just Wing It"
You wouldn’t pitch investors without rehearsing, so why launch on PH unprepared?
Do this instead:
- Spend 4-6 weeks prepping.
- Tease the launch on Twitter/LinkedIn.
- Line up friends, users, and influencers to upvote immediately when you go live.
- Sounding Like a Robot Salesperson
Nobody cares about your "disruptive AI-powered solution." PH users want the story—why you built this, who it helps, and why it’s cool.
So do this instead:
- Write like you’re explaining it to a friend.
- Post a quick, scrappy demo video (no corporate nonsense).
- Actually, reply to comments with personality.
- Launching at the Wrong Damn Time
Posting at 3 PM? Congrats, you’re buried under 50 other products by noon. PH resets at midnight PT, and the first few hours decide your fate.
Do this instead:
Launch at the time and have your squad ready to upvote and comment fast.
- Pitching to the Wrong Crowd
PH loves tools for makers, creators, and indie hackers. If you’re selling enterprise accounting software, you’d better reframe it.
Do this instead:
Highlight how it helps individuals (even if it’s B2B).
Offer a free tier or PH-exclusive deal.
- Assuming People Know How to Help
Newsflash: Most people don’t know they need to click the upvote button (not just like your comment).
Do this instead:
- Say: “Help us out—click the 🔼 upvote button at the top!”
- Link directly to your PH page (not your homepage).
- Ghosting After Launching
Posting and disappearing is like throwing a party and then hiding in the bathroom.
Do this instead:
- Reply to every comment (even just a “Thanks!”).
- Engage with other launches—PH rewards community players.
- Letting Stupid Tech Issues Kill Momentum
Broken demo? 404 page? You just lost trust forever.
Do this instead:
- Test everything the day before.
- Have a backup plan (e.g., a Loom walkthrough if live demo fails)
- Trying to Launch Everywhere at Once
PH + Hacker News + Reddit + Twitter = spreading yourself too thin.
Do this instead:
- Go all-in on PH for 48 hours.
- Use email, Slack, and social to drive traffic only to PH.
- Ignoring Feedback (or Worse, Arguing)
If someone says “This would be better with X,” don’t defend—listen. PH is free customer research.
Do this instead:
- Say “Great idea—we’re adding that!” (even if you’re not).
- Use criticism to improve your pitch.
Be a Human, Not a Billboard
PH isn’t a magic traffic button. It’s a community. Hang out there before launching. Upvote others. Be helpful. Then, when it’s your turn, people will actually care.
Now go fix your launch. 🚀

Really appreciate how you framed this as a process, not a one-day event. The advice about reframing B2B products to focus on individual users is something most guides gloss over, but it can make or break engagement on PH. Curious, have you seen any examples where a purely enterprise product managed to resonate without repositioning, or is that always a non-starter?
It really falls down to how you can share your message of the product better to resonate. You don't have to reposition 100%, but you definitely need to identify the ICP very well and make the message relate to them
