Why I'm building an AI assistant in Gmail

I’ve always been an email person. Text me with something that needs action, and I’ll ask you to email it to me. It’s how I keep track of what needs to be done, on my own time. My inbox is basically my to-do list.

Live chat has its place, especially for fast customer support or internal communication, but let’s be real: it won’t replace email.

Sure, email isn’t perfect. The main problem is that collaboration is clunky (that’s why we previously built DragApp and served 200K+ Gmail users).

But there’s another issue—email admin. While handling dozens of daily emails at DragApp, I realized I wasn’t drowning in emails. I was drowning in decisions about what to do with them. Archive? Reply now? Delegate? Flag for later? That’s the invisible task nobody talks about.

Managing repetitive tasks and staying on top of emails takes time, and with email volumes rising, this is only getting worse. We trust AI can help solve this.

Here’s why email is irreplaceable:

• Async communication: No need to respond instantly, which means less distractions and better thought-out responses than live chat.

• Organized: Searchable threads, folders, and tags make email far superior to chat for managing info.

• Clear accountability: Email’s structure makes it easier to track progress and ensure things don’t slip through the cracks.

That said, here are its flaws:

• Time-consuming organization.

• Tons of irrelevant content.

• Long, structured replies.

• Manual follow-ups.
