July 24, 2025 Why I Went All-In on BYOK for Hey Help (and What That Actually Means)

Most AI tools make you pay for the same thing. Again. And again.

You try three different apps. They all use GPT-4 under the hood. And you get charged three times. That always felt off to me. So when I started building Hey Help, I knew I wanted to take a different route.

That’s why Hey Help is fully BYOK: Bring Your Own Key.

Instead of hiding the model behind our backend and quietly billing you for tokens, we let you plug in your own API key: OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, whatever works for you.

Yes, it’s a bit technical. But the benefit? Surprisingly human.

So… what is BYOK?

If you haven’t come across it before, BYOK just means:
You connect your own API key from your chosen AI provider to the tool you’re using.

For Hey Help, that means:

  • You get to choose the model (GPT-4, Claude, Gemini…)

  • You pay exactly what the provider charges (no markups)

  • You can use the same key across multiple tools

It gives you control, transparency, and flexibility. Without getting locked into a vendor’s backend or pricing model.

Why I chose BYOK for Hey Help

I’ve been building email tools for a while - first with Drag, which has 200K+ users, and now with Hey Help. So I’ve seen the costs of AI scale up quickly, especially when you're bundling usage behind the scenes.

With BYOK:

  • I don’t need to overprice the product to protect against unpredictable usage

  • You don’t get surprise charges or opaque limits

  • We both get a simpler, fairer system

And bonus: it makes the infrastructure lighter and easier to maintain, which means I can ship faster.

Real-world example

Let’s say you use:

  • A meeting notes tool (using GPT-4)

  • A customer support assistant (also GPT-4)

  • Hey Help (yep… GPT-4 again)

Without BYOK: Each app charges you separately for GPT-4 . You end up paying 3x for the same thing.
With BYOK: You plug your key into all of them. You pay once. You control how those tokens are used.

Is BYOK only for devs?

Not at all. At Hey Help, I wanted this to be accessible for non-technical users too.

We built a super simple flow:

  1. Pick your provider (OpenAI, Gemini, Claude…)

  2. Generate your API key (we give you step-by-step help)

  3. Paste it into Hey Help. Done.

It takes under 2 minutes. You never touch the backend. You’re just in control.

Final thoughts

I didn’t choose BYOK just because it’s trendy. I chose it because I genuinely believe it’s the more honest way to build AI products — especially for folks like us building in public, scaling lean, and wanting control over what we pay for.

I’d love to hear what you think — is BYOK the future of AI tools?
Have you tried it in your own projects? Drop your thoughts or questions — I’m building this in public and learning as I go.

May 9, 2025 Why I'm building an AI assistant in Gmail

I’ve always been an email person. Text me with something that needs action, and I’ll ask you to email it to me. It’s how I keep track of what needs to be done, on my own time. My inbox is basically my to-do list.

Live chat has its place, especially for fast customer support or internal communication, but let’s be real: it won’t replace email.

Sure, email isn’t perfect. The main problem is that collaboration is clunky (that’s why we previously built DragApp and served 200K+ Gmail users).

But there’s another issue—email admin. While handling dozens of daily emails at DragApp, I realized I wasn’t drowning in emails. I was drowning in decisions about what to do with them. Archive? Reply now? Delegate? Flag for later? That’s the invisible task nobody talks about.

Managing repetitive tasks and staying on top of emails takes time, and with email volumes rising, this is only getting worse. We trust AI can help solve this.

Here’s why email is irreplaceable:

  • Async communication: No need to respond instantly, which means less distractions and better thought-out responses than live chat.

  • Organized: Searchable threads, folders, and tags make email far superior to chat for managing info.

  • Clear accountability: Email’s structure makes it easier to track progress and ensure things don’t slip through the cracks.

That said, here are its flaws:

  • Time-consuming organization.

  • Tons of irrelevant content.

  • Long, structured replies.

  • Manual follow-ups.

If you’re drowning in admin work or paying for an EA to handle your inbox, you will like what we're building 😊. Hey Help is an AI Executive Assistant for Gmail. It automates the boring stuff, saving you 1 hour a day.

Still early days, and we're looking for early adopters! If you’re curious, we’d love for you to follow along 👉 https://www.heyhelp.ai/early-access/.

About

Email is great for async, organized communication. But admin tasks make it a time sink (eg. identifying action items, sorting, etc). HeyHelp saves you 1 hour a day by handling your inbox admin tasks, just like an EA.
