Wrote this free guide on how to do SEO as a SaaS startup

The SEO game is rigged to favor big brands.

If you’re an underdog, ranking on the first page of Google is harder than ever.

So, what should you do instead…

Zag while others zig.

Or, simply put, prioritize high-intent keywords that most brands ignore.

With this approach:

  • You’ll get first-page rankings faster instead of waiting for months and years to rank for a competitive keyword.
  • You’ll easily acquire signups from your content instead of waiting FOREVER before driving conversions from SEO.

We recently used this framework for one of our B2B clients.

And in less than eight months, they gained 3,000+ signups directly from SEO.

So, I’ve written a short guide outlining the exact types of keywords we targeted.

Plus, practical examples showing you how to do the same for your SaaS startup.

And I’m giving it away for FREE to this community.

To gain immediate access, click on the Google Docs link below, and you’ll be able to read and download it right now.

Great guide! Have you tried semrush.com?
They can spot alternative keywords instantly in the Keyword Gap tool, and I started using it recently for my website: https://acetrace.app

    1. 1

That's an interesting feature, Alexander. So they pull up high intent key words that are missed by other content?

      1. 1

Something like that, I'm not sure how their algorithm works, you can play with it

  2. 2

Great stuff, neatly condensed, the "alternative to" and "x vs y" type of content is a good way to get some early traffic.

In the process of implementing a similar approach to a new project.

  3. 2

This is a great guide to encourage the value of low traffic keywords.

It leaves me wondering, though, how you implemented the next steps. How many pages did you create and how did you write the content for those pages?

After the keywords, I'd imagine that many people would like insight into your content production process.

    1. 1

      That's a great question!

In the case of this client, we publish roughly about 4 posts per month.

As regards how we create the content itself, that's an idea for future guides.

Will definitely put that in mind and share here once it's ready.

    2. 1

I also have the same question
@yourcontentmart Do you have recommendations on how to structure these posts

      1. 1

Definitely, we have a process for structuring those articles.

Perhaps, I'll work on a guide to explain this further in the coming days/ weeks.

    Great guide, thanks for sharing!

    Hey Abdul,

    Thanks for this great article.

For monitUp.com, I was fully focused on SEO because my search results are awful.

I will try these and hope it works. My blog page will be finished in a day or two and I will identify different keywords and write articles.

    Thank you very much!

Jus to be clear, targeting keywords like "Best productivity tools for Mac" means to write a blog post with the title "Best productivity tools for Mac" (and a relevant body text)?

  19. 1

Thanks for sharing. I like the idea behind focusing on [FOCUS KEYWORD] + Alternative
Low competition, high intention. Used it a few times with several companies and saw great results

    1. 1

Glad to hear that it has worked well for you as well.

  20. 1

When you say that you targeted keywords, did they mean just writing content for those keywords or did you do google ads for those keywords?

    1. 1

Yes, it means writing content that's optimized to rank on the search engines for those keywords.

  21. 1

Feedback '560+ Signups' feels like a weird number. With no proof feels made up.

The actually ideas are good! The presentation is a little 'meh' for me.

    1. 1

      Thanks for your response, Josh.

Well, the overall idea behind the guide isn't to convince anyone to believe it.

Instead, I wanted to show B2B SaaS Startups what's possible if you target high- intent MOFU and BOFU keywords.

And if you ask any SEO or content marketer who has actually used this strategy, they'll tell you how it's helped them to acquire signups at scale.

If you feel it's made up despite the screenshots from GA, there's nothing I can do about that.

      1. 1

You misunderstand me. I'm trying to help. :)

If you say '560+ signups' it feels made up. If you say 'We used these strategies to get 506+ signups for a Saas client' it feels real.

Random numbers without proof or facts seem made up. 'You will get 113 signups!'

Round numbers without proof or facts can work. 'You will get hundreds of signups!'

Since your number is real, give the personal angle, little more detail to have more impact.

        1. 1

There was no where I mentioned that you'll get exactly that number of signups in the document.

Instead, I clearly mentioned in the first two paragraphs that we used this exact strategy to help a B2B SaaS Startup to acquire 3,000+ signups in less than eight months.

If you had issues with the heading, you can point that out.

But saying that everything seem made up without proof (despite the screenshots) doesn't show that you wanted to share a helpful feedback in the first comment.

          1. 2

I am not sure what to think of this. I really like the idea that you want to get across and I have some success with it myself. But when I go to your website this pricing is high and I am not sure what I am going to get.
And the response to Josh is a bit aggressive is you ask me.

            1. 1

              Thanks for your comment.

I'm sorry if the response to Josh seems aggressive, even though that was never intended.

I've been a member of IH for some months, and I try to contribute valuable insights as much as possible.

I'm glad to hear that you've seen success with this strategy in the past.

              That's awesome!

Regarding the pricing on our website, we actually have our monthly retainer services and productized services.

Mind sharing more details about the kind of help you need?

              1. 1

At this moment we (me and some investors) are orientating for a full fletched SEO service, with strategy and execution. Normally I would do it myself, but I just don't have enough time on my hands to do it.
First we want to have clear idea of what the SEO strategy will be and then how it will be executed.

                1. 1

                  Okay, noted.

That provides a bit of insight.

To move forward, here's what I'll recommend.

Kindly book a discovery session through the link below:

You can provide more info about the kind of SEO service you're looking for and more in the form.

Let me know if you have any questions.
