YC Build Sprint: Day #10 Update

Tenth day of the sprint (check out the previous update here). Ok, it's official - the burnout is here! Today was by far the slowest day of the sprint. There was an interesting "happening" at the end of the day but in terms of raw productivity and growth, it was quiet mediocre. But not to worry! Today was just one of those days and I'm confident things will turn out better tomorrow. So, onto the update!

Sprint Goal:

Acquire 50 new premium user for Ryeboard

Previous Objectives:

1) Get landing page visitors up to 100!

Ok, this took a nosedive. We're down to 40 from yesterday's 49. While concerning, I feel it just has to do with the fact we're doing no active outreach besides simply writing on Indie Hackers about our progress. Found a few interesting things tho:

  • We get more visitors from Facebook than Twitter despite not maintaining our Facebook page (might get back on it).
  • The nice bump in visitors we had the past few months was due to an article released on Makeuseof. But it had outdated details :(
  • These updates on Indie Hackers gives us a slight boost (about 5%)
I'm going to be refining my goals in this "top-funnel" area for tomorrow.

2) Finish user segmentation and personas!

SUCCESS. It was painful, but I feel like I have a rough user segment and persona done. I'm going to write about it later if I have time. But it really helped me understand our retention problems and behaviour patterns in some groups.

3) Post Ryeboard on three different places!

So this was tricky. In the past, I would just post on any site, subreddit, or forum but I realized that it is usually a waste of time and it can be dangerous. Why dangerous? Well, it often runs the risk of alienating potential users and pissing off the whole (or a large part of the) community. Also, we already posted on Product Hunt (#5 product of the week), Hacker News (Front page) and Reddit (on the coveted Productivity subreddit). For better or worse we've already burned through those popular platforms. This forced me to really reconsider my approach to growth and marketing. I'm actually going to try a more "surgical" route where I contact individual people on LinkedIn and Twitter to create some opportunities. This will be reflected in tomorrow's goals.

Key Metrics and Analysis :

  • WAU: 132
  • MAU: 80
  • Stickiness: 32.53%
  • New registrations: 19
  • New premium upgrades: 0
  • Total landing page visitors: 40

Very high conversion rate there but the rest is... meh. Time is ticking and I need to do something quick tomorrow.

Objectives for Tomorrow:

  • Reach out to 10 different people about using Ryeboard!
  • Optimize our keywords and SEO
  • Finish updating our billing system!

That's it for today! It was a tiresome, slow day but I'm really excited about tomorrow. A huge reason is because I have a call with a potential investor (this is the happening that I wrote above) in the morning. I'm going in with realistic expectations but still looking forward to the call.
