July 11, 2026 Brand guidelines for freelancers: what actually matters when it's just you

Most brand guideline advice online is written for teams of 50+ — stakeholder alignment, approval workflows, multi-department consistency. None of that applies when you're a freelancer working with one client at a time.

Wrote up what I think actually matters instead: fewer sections, not more. Usage notes that matter more than the assets themselves. Guidelines that need to survive without you in the room, since the real test isn't the handoff meeting — it's whether someone can open it eight months later with zero memory of that meeting and still get it right.

Curious if other solo builders here have run into a similar gap where standard advice in your space assumes a team that doesn't exist for you.

I think the key insight is that documentation isn't competing with memory—it's competing with future ambiguity.

The most valuable brand guideline isn't the one that explains every rule. It's the one that helps someone make the right decision when they encounter a situation the document never explicitly covered.

That's a genuinely better way to put it than I managed in the post. "Competing with future ambiguity" is exactly the failure mode — most guidelines document the 10 decisions the person writing it already thought of, and stay completely silent on the 11th one someone actually runs into six months later.

Makes me think the real test of a good guideline isn't coverage, it's whether the underlying logic is clear enough that someone can extrapolate the right call even in a situation you never explicitly wrote down. That's a much higher bar than "did I document the rules," and I don't think I'm fully there yet with how BrandStack structures this.

        I'm glad it resonated.

Your last paragraph raised a question for me about how BrandStack evolves from documenting decisions to teaching judgment. I'd rather share the reasoning in the context of your product than try to squeeze it into a thread.

July 11, 2026 BrandStack vs. Frontify: what I learned comparing my solo project to an enterprise brand platform

Frontify is a genuinely strong product — built for enterprise brand teams managing dozens of stakeholders across regions. I'm building BrandStack for the opposite end of that spectrum: freelancers and small studios who just need their brand assets organized without sales calls or SSO setup.

Wrote up the honest comparison — where Frontify's complexity is genuinely earned, and where that same complexity becomes overhead for a solo designer. Curious if other indie builders here have run into the same "enterprise tool vs. what I actually need" gap in their own space.

I'm a graphic designer who kept running into the same problem on every project: brand assets scattered across old PDFs, half-updated Figma files, and folders nobody could navigate. BrandStack exists because I got tired o
