November 7, 2024 Not sure of next steps - How can I reach my customers?

I got some feedback last week that it's a bit unclear on the homepage what the product does, so I tried to improve the story. I know it's not perfect, but I think it's better & I've feeling like additional efforts are going to have diminishing returns. Ok... now what?

If I'm honest, I'm still really unclear around who I should approach / how to approach potential customers. My guess is that they are small companies that want to improve their websites & understand how users are using their products, but I can't think of a way to reach out to companies without sounding spammy, which has always been a fear of mine. On the other hand, I'm not sure how to search the internet for "people who want to have a better understanding of user activity on their site"....

I'm an engineer, and my excuse has always been "that's not the kind of thing I'm good at".. but now I really want to figure it out. I'm just not sure how :-P Does anybody out there have advice? What has worked for you in the past?

P.S. I'm really interested to make some meaningful & mutually helpful connections here on Indie Hackers (have made a few great ones so far!).. Please reach out, I'm happy to share or help you in any way I can!

Hi, congrats on your launch! I'd use several ways:

    • find out where your users can hang out (for example, which subreddit), and post about your product there (be careful though as Reddit is a pretty toxic place)

    • figure out which words your users use to solve their problem (with a product like yours), then write the corresponding articles, publish on your website (don't forget to make sure it's indexed), and in the corresponding communities

    • find the questions your potential users may ask (which your product is answer) and answer - for example, monitor Reddit to be the first one to say "hey, my product X can solve this problem easily).

    Good luck!

      Very interesting!

October 30, 2024 2 weeks in and I have an MVP

If I'm totally honest, this is where things get really scary for me. In the past, every time I get to the point of getting out there with real people, that fear takes over me and I convince myself that what I'm working on is not really worth the effort of being anything more than a fun engineering exercise.

This time feels different. Not that I have some idea that I think is gonna "go viral" or be that useful to anybody right now. Not that that fear is gone. But this time, I know I'm going to push forward.

ClickHoverHighlight embodies what I've learned to be the most important thing about building a startup - understanding users and their wants, needs, and struggles. For time-strapped founders, that's hard! For me, it was a thing I could conveniently dismiss because I was "too busy building".

This is very much a prototype right now. The messaging could be better, the product delivers minimum value (if any), but it does do stuff enough to get the point across, I hope. If you found this intriguing and have read this far, I'd be absolutely delighted if you could roast my product. You can also reach out to me at rkotcher@gmail.com if you want to connect. (I'm also happy to take a look at what you're building and give feedback!)

    The value prop is enticing.

This is what is keeping me from signing up:

I don't know how it integrates with my site.

Is it a JavaScript that I include on every page? Will it slow everything down? Is there a backend component? Does it work with all frontend frameworks, or some? Will it work with plain old HTML pages? What about SPAs? Do I need to give it access to my analytics?

A few sentences about this would give me what I need to make the go / no go decision on signing up.

P.S. I will sign up anyway to find out.

Hi Krystian, thanks for the message. App is only a few weeks old so it's rough around the edges, but I'm glad you can see through to the vision!

I'm planning to put a "getting started" page, but if you sign in and go to Configure tab there is a snippet of javascript that you can put in your pages.

Won't slow things down since it just sends events to the backend in the same way, say, Mixpanel would. It's all async.

If you're open to it, could I borrow maybe 20 minutes of your time to learn what resonated with you? I'm happy to provide support for WasItSent in any way I can...

(p.s. coding at the playground, now that's next level!)

Hey @isak1chad, updated the landing page with writing that explains the value prop a bit better and I think visually things are a bit better... what do you think?
