February 12, 2020 Launched Yearly Billing

After two years of existence, yesterday I launched yearly billing with the Closet Assistant.

It's not a huge milestone, but it was an important update. It introduced much more transparency around billing and account management.

I was able to snag 10 upgrades from monthly to yearly 👍 making it my single highest single pay-day ever!

Two years ago I made my first dollar on the internet. Yesterday I made almost $2.5k.

I'm always grateful that Indiehackers was around when I got started to push me in the right direction. The community was invaluable (still is).

If you have any questions about product, SEO, Stripe, or anything else SaaS related, comment below! I'd love to help you out.

December 15, 2019 $200k ARR

https://jdnoc.com/open

651 days. That's how long it has taken me to get from my first payment to $16666.66 in MRR ($200k ARR). That's almost two years, for those keeping track.

It's been slow, steady growth. There have been some months where I've worked so hard I felt like I needed a vacation, and other months that I've taken off entirely.

And yes, it's just me. I quit my job in Nov 2019 to work on this app full time.

Yes, that's right, I essentially got to this point by working in the mornings for 2-3 hours before work for two years.

I normally don't make a big announcement about my income since in the past when I've done it people flooded the niche with clones and sub-par apps.

But, I figured now it doesn't really matter. I've got a core base of customers who rely on my tool to bring them income, and as long as I keep delivering and making new features, they'll keep paying.

I feel like my story is different from most people. I didn't try and fail a lot. I didn't sweat the small stuff. I didn't ask for advice often. I just did what I thought would be helpful in a niche that needed help.

I've written a lot about my journey up to this point, and I have the same advice now that I did when I was making $0 MRR.

I think the one thing I've learned, is that anyone can be successful, especially if they themselves take on successful habits and characteristics.

For now, this is the only app that I've made. So technically right now I'm a one-hit-wonder. But, I can tell you that I have confidence I can do it again, and again, and again, for the rest of time.

Because I have invested in myself, and have adopted timeless character building principles in my life, I know I can always be successful.

I don't actually know what the future holds, and I don't know what I will be building or working on. I know I will be working on this app for the next year or so before I venture out into another entrepreneurial endeavor.

But, for now, I'm here to tell you that anyone can do this. It takes time, it takes skills, it takes wisdom, and it takes patience.

It's not rocket science. It's just a matter of serving and helping people with the skills you have learned.

Let me repeat that: if you can help people, you can get paid. Anything you build should help people save time, save money, or allow them to make more money. That's it.

If you can do that with a simple app that has good performance, good documentation, and great customer service, well, then you're in business.

Take action on your goals. Don't wait until tomorrow. Work on your most important task for the day first thing in the morning. In a few years you will have what you hoped for.

save time, save money, or allow them to make more money. That's it.

Or make friends, find partner, get laid, improve mental or physical health, learn something new etc etc. There is a world outside the time/money equation.

Anyway, congrats on awesome success, and thanks for your openness.

Good work. Thank you for sharing..."have adopted timeless character building principles in my life, I know I can always be successful." Biggest win there for sure. Company building time maybe? If so...new skills and new challenges.

    Kick ass man!

    Congrats! That's a big accomplishment.

Great read and congrats on the milestone, Jordan!

  6. 2

Congrats man. 2 years and 200k ARR is not slow. Don’t discredit yourself, you are crushing it!!!

  7. 2

That's awesome! How'd you come up with the idea? I couldn't find it poking around.

  8. 2

    Congrats on the milestone.

  9. 2

    Congratulations Jordan.

Always happy to see your updates.

  10. 2

    Congratulations and thanks for sharing!

    That's an incredible journey Jordan.
Did you promote under your own name while still working that job?

  12. 1

    Congrats!

Is 2 years to $200k supposed to be slow? Most don't even make money in the first place.

August 9, 2019 50k Annual Organic Clicks

Today, the Closet Tools website reached 4250+ organic clicks in the last month. And a few days a go the site had its first 200+ organic click day.

SEO has been a crucial part to the growth and success of the Closet Assistant. Writing for specific keywords has proven to be a great way of attracting the right customers.

The next goal is 100k!

July 2, 2019 Reached $10k MRR

The Closet Assistant has continued to grow at a clip of +$1k/month. Getting to $10k was inevitable.

This was done mostly through SEO. The Closet Tools website gets 3000+/month in organic traffic for intent-based keywords.

I also reinvest about $1000/month in Facebook ads (just a simple content funnel).

I'll continue to write excellent content, invest more in FB ads (and other platforms soon).

I document almost everything on my blog → https://unindie.com

If you have any questions, be sure to leave a comment.

I remember you say was brooke with debt many month ago. This is makes me happy, saw your saas bring a good revenue and have a nice growth. Congrats bro

Thanks man! For sure, when I started I was in a lot of financial trouble. Now I'm really close to financial independence.

      1. 1

Yup, keep up the good work bro👍

congrats Jordan, this is monumental for a solo side project!

Do you find the FB ads bring in quality leads?

    1. 1

So, I'm not 100% sure. I don't have the proper tracking in place to map a FB sourced lead all the way to a conversion.

But, I do have the FB pixel installed, so I'm trying to push traffic through to build up a profile of the type of person that's interested in the product. Also, retargeting.

Once I quit my full-time job I'll make a proper funnel and track all of that!

      1. 1

Hey @jordanmoconnor, I'm intrigued in your strategy with FB Ads also.

Are you targeting for interests? Do you land them on your homepage/specific landing pages/blogposts/register?

        1. 1

Eh, just a simple content funnel. Nothing crazy, nothing tracked. Just building up my pixel with traffic.

Hey! I spent about a month making the MVP. I wrote all about it here: https://unindie.com/first-year/

February 11, 2019 $4k (That was fast!)

https://unindie.com/open

I didn't expect to reach $4k so soon. I was just at $3500 two weeks ago. A combination of more free trials and next to no churn led to an incredible first two weeks of February!

Really excited to get to remake the Assistant and add more features that users have been asking for. Lot's more in store!

More than revenue would interesting to see the profit

    1. 7

Profit is 100%. Technically I pay $12 a year for the domain name 🤷.

I have a Firebase backend - and my usage is well within the free tier. I don't pay for any marketing or content services. I built everything and write everything from scratch.

The only channels of growth are through word-of-mouth and SEO (I would argue mostly SEO).

I don't think it will always be 100% profit, I plan on adding some more powerful features that will use Firebase more extensively. But for now, I really just check to see if people are paying when they log into the app. The rest of the functionality of the app is client-side.

    2. 1

      Yes the profit is important

  2. 2

    Congratulation Jordan!

  3. 1

What's your feed URL? I've tried a few common URL guesses but had no success...

I have zero intention of signing up for an email list, but if you have a feed, I'll happily add your blog to my reader!

      1. 1

        Excellent! Just subscribed 😄

  4. 1

Congrats. What tool do you use to show the Open Stats or is that a separate service

    1. 1

I use the same Firebase backend I use for the app and I made the page myself.

I use https://webtask.io to run a cron job everyday to pull my stripe/google analytics into firebase, and then I display the data from firebase on the page.

Awesome start to 2019! Keep it up!

More details needed !!!! ..... congrats man......;)

January 26, 2019 Official Chrome Extension

We're finally legit! Got approved the other day. Just switched all of the Chrome installation links to point to this.

This will help make onboarding so much easier for users, and gives the Closet Assistant a new outlet for discovery!

Hi Jordan! May I ask you why the chrome extension is not listed in the chrome web store?

    1. 1

Mostly because I would have had to redo my code to make all of the JS local instead of dynamically adding JS files. At the time I made it, the bookmarklet was important. Now the extension is more important. I plan on making one soon!

      1. 1

        Thanks for the reply!

I don't think it should be a huge hurdle for you. When you upload a new version of your chrome extension to the store, user browsers pull in the updated version automatically within hours.

      I'm lazy 🤷‍♂️

January 8, 2019 Mobile Onboarding

I added the Mobile page to help users with installing the Assistant on their phones.

Since then, more people have been signing up, and I have had less support requests!
