After months of hard work and long hours coding/designing every little detail, today, we are very thrilled to show you our first template based on Tailwind CSS.

This release is a huge milestone for us and marks the transition for Cruip from being just a niche gallery of landing pages to a marketplace of rich/various high-quality coded resources.

We’re very excited to announce that after 1-year of using our custom CSS framework, we recently decided to switch to Tailwind CSS as the new front-end base for all Cruip templates!
It hasn’t been a simple choice, because we invested a lot of time in building our custom CSS framework, but our long term goal and vision for Cruip has evolved during the time, so we had to change accordingly.
Why we’re switching to Tailwind
The main reason is that Cruip is transitioning from a niche gallery of landing pages to a marketplace of diverse high-quality coded resources, such as landing pages templates, website themes, and application dashboards.
So, the custom framework we initially built just to perform a specific task was no longer able to support the new long term vision.
Why Tailwind
The rationale behind switching to Tailwind is all about the freedom it gives us - we can create almost anything we've in mind without having to worry about the lack of flexibility of the common component-based approach.
Last but not least, we believe Tailwind is going to surpass Boostrap in terms of popularity sooner than later, and this poll we sent to our customers confirmed us just that 👇️
What’s next
Now, we’re getting closer to the launch of the first website theme based on Tailwind (sneak peek here), and we’re working on different new resources that will be released on Cruip.com in the next few months.
Alongside that, we’re also planning to change our business model from a buy and get all templates approach (similar to Tailwind UI) to a buy per single resource strategy - honestly, this is the scared part: our numbers are growing very well with the current model, but we feel that this a necessary step toward the new direction.

From my experience, you won't regret it. The versatility of TailwindCSS is as good than vanilla CSS plus, a very clear and simple syntax semantic. The learning curve is so short and flat (with a text editor integration) that there is almost no down sides of using it.
I discovered as well after 8 months of usage in RoleUp that you're ending up creating your own CSS components with the TailwindCSS Extracting Components. This is actually when it starts to become a no brainer. The framework is here to help you in the particularities of your project. Advantage that does not exist with a framework which is not utility-first.

Nice one Davide - I think it's a great call.
After skimming these comments I didn't see anyone mention how focusing on the Tailwind niche - becoming a go-to for high-end Tailwind templates - is a smarter marketing move than sticking with standard CSS.
Unsure about the once-off pricing. So tricky as MRR is like gold dust for us makers. But it works so well for certain products and I'll throw Adam in the debate. He is killing it with once-off products. So kinda confirms his/your community appreciates it too!

Davide, a really good post and good luck with the business and the potential changes to the pricing. On a personal note, I generally prefer to pay a one-off fee, but others may feel that they would prefer to pay for each item used. The other option is to create tiers
On another note, we have been looking at both Tailwind CSS as well as the latest Bootstrap (and what is coming). I’m curious about your comment though regarding popularity. I have looked on Builtwith.com and Boostrap by far outstrips Tailwind in terms of installed base and so curious as to why you think that? Please understand I’m not challenging you - I’m genuinely curious as we are unsure which way to go, but my cursory look indicated that Bootstrap was maturing but still had by far the biggest base and also growth.

Sure, it’s about the growth rate: Tailwind is growing faster than Boostrap, so even if the latter still maintains the lead (in terms of weekly installations, for example), we don’t think it will last long...

I must say I never got how this became so popular.
I can understand how it is great to create the first version of something (allows the developer to quickly mock the designer's work), but I don't understand how you can use it to go through updates. Just try to change all <whatever> style across the project, and you'll find that you have to find-replace like crazy.Maybe for you who always create the first version of a template it is great. And if your customers like it, then it's probably the right thing for you.

Generally if its a larger project you don't dump all the classes into your HTML, you build components using the
applytag.Realistically though not many people are going to have an established project and suddenly need to change things like that across a wide area.

Right. But if the component is called blue-btn (which is the example that they give) and there's some change that makes all blue buttosns green, you're in trouble.
Of course you can name your components by role and not by style, but that goes against the library's styleguide.-

There'd be two possible solutions to that;
-
You name your classes by purpose or by a generic pattern (e.g
btn-primary) -
You find/replace to update them
For option 1 this is incredibly simple, you can actually set 'primary' up as a colour inside tailwinds config. So you would only change 1 line if your colourscheme changed.
This is actually the recommended approach if you arent using the build in color palet as you then only have to change your hex in one place.
It also has the added benefit of being a little more familiar for those of us that have used bootstrap for a long time.
For option 2 I don't see that being too big of a deal. The naming conventions are predictable so a find-replace isn't going to be a big deal at all, even if you're using all the colour hue/brightness levels (E.g
bg-blue-50).Even taking your example of changing a
btn-bluetobtn-green, this is a pretty simple change to make and certainly not something that I'd ever expect to cause significant headaches.I'd also argue that you A) realisically arent going to be needing to change all your colors very often, if ever and B) should be extensively testing your changes after such a huge change.
Tailwind's certainly not a silver bullet but a lot of the arguments against it are the same issues you'd have with any other css framework, including bootstrap and are just part and parcel of web development in my experience.

Sounds like a great idea! I've also considered using Tailwind for my templates. It's understandable that the pricing change is scary but consider this: what if your numbers are growing well not because of your current pricing but despite of it? Unless you really know, it's worth a try. And you can always go back to the previous pricing if it doesn't work out.

You don't actually have to have all that html bloat at all with tailwind, people just chose to as its generally a heck of a lot quicker if you're just building something quickly.
It's got an
applytag included for use in sass/less/postcss so you can build things like your own cards, buttons, forms etc. The difference is they don't end up looking like the bootstrap default ones that way too many people use and don't bother to make unique.The recent inclusion of purgecss with no setup needed is a big plus as well, you can get your entire css down to just a couple of kb pretty easily.
Overall I love it. Like most people I hated it based on concept when I first saw it, but its one of those things that you really just need to try out to fully understand and appreciate I think.

Tailwind and Bulma, like others, aren't there to "fix" CSS.
It's mainly about organization.

Hi Simon, I never said that Bootstrap is going away, but that probably it is going to lose the lead as the most popular CSS frameworks. That's just a personal opinion, of course :)

Agree. I don't like that particular philosophy of setting up css classes per property. I believe tachyons was the first framework to do that.
Either way, go with what your customers like the best.

What HTML bloat? I noticed a lot of people who don't like tailwind are the people who never actually used it.

Tailwind doesn't cause bloat. Lack of knowledge does. You can create components with it just like any other framework. It sounds to me like you haven't used it.
What it does allow is quicker designs.
I've worked with a dozen Bootstrap projects- every single one ended up with a glorious amount of custom code that became a nightmare to maintain.

We got the majority of this traction from a successful post on Hacker News, and we learned the importance of open-source projects as a marketing strategy to bring qualified leads to our paid products - in this case, new customers to Cruip.com.
We will probably release new open-source resources in the upcoming weeks, and in the meantime, have a look at the free template here, or download it on Github :)

May I ask why you've chosen GPL as an open-source license? If I'm not missing the point it means that every adjustment of the theme needs to be openly published as well. This could be a blocker for many potential users.

Sure: we applied the same license we use for our free resources on Cruip.com - so there is not a specific reason behind this choice. Honestly, I don't think you need to openly publish any changes to the template, but I'm going to double-check this matter just to be sure that I'm not missing anything. This part is the most important one:
If you do distribute YOUR APPLICATION, and you used something GPL as part of your application (even if only linking at run-time to a library) - and even if you do not charge money - and even if you do not change that GPL s/w in any way - then you MUST make the source of YOUR APPLICATION available.

I found landing.ant.design to be quite useful; they even have a code editor that will spit out a React.js template (not create-react-app but it does give you all the styling necessary). I'll use it for TinyDevCRM's landing page once the MVP is shipped.

Today we finally launched React, Vue.js, and Sketch landing page templates 🔥

So far we've developed 11 premium templates and we plan to reach 20 premium resources within the next 6 months (see below for more details).
4 months of Cruip PRO - How things are going?
Recently, some fellow Hackers have asked me how things are going with Cruip PRO, so I would like to take the chance to share some insights/thoughts with all you:
Numbers:
We're steadily increasing our monthly revenues. For example, in September we did $1.200, and in October $1.500 so far.
We're pretty satisfied with how things are proceeding, but I can't deny that my expectations were a lot higher when we launched Cruip PRO 4 months ago!
What went wrong?
In my opinion, the biggest mistake we made has been to release too many free resources before start monetising. For example, when we launched Cruip PRO we had tons of free templates (16) and just 4 premium resources in our gallery.
The freemium model doesn’t work if you’re trying to sell what you’re also giving away for free (in our case, landing pages). Why? Because people always try to take advantage of free stuff, so as a consequence you end up having your biggest competitor in-house (the free resources).
5 things we learned

Free and (often) freemium models don’t work for Indie Hackers. They both require crazy numbers to sustain and grow the product in the long run.

We’re often scared of charging because we think our products aren’t good enough - That's stupid because if we skip the hard things, we’re just playing a rigged game.

If the goal is to make money, we shouldn’t consider newsletter subscribers, the number of signups, Twitter followers, etc… as small wins for the cause - They are just vanity metrics.

It’s simpler to convert 10 users at 30/month than 20 at $5/month. Furthermore, 10 users are easier to serve and manage.
-
Instead of building products to solve our own problems, we should focus on what we're good at, so we provide real value and we also enjoy the journey.
What’s next
Our goal is to reach $6K in monthly revenues within the next six months, and in order to do that, we’re going to:
- Change the price: from $39 (limited time offer) to $69
- Develop new premium templates and gradually decrease (or convert) the free ones
- Expand the templates to new technologies (e.g., Hugo, Gatsby, etc..)
- Increase the marketing activities (via the blog and tutorials)
Basically we will double down on what is working (point 2 and 3), and we’ll increase our marketing efforts gradually.

I wish someone went beyond just the basics and offered more. I would love a React/Gatsby based template with
- landing page
- all essential pages in a website for SaaS
- blog page
- connected to a few CMSes
One-time pay, one-click import to Github, easy configuration, and deploy. Everything on the website can either be hand-edited or edited from CMS.
Couldn't find anything like this, ended up going with Webflow + a paid template.

Landen.co does what you are asking, but webflow is a great choice too. I have use both and I would say that landen allows less personalization and has a CMS that is pretty basic (no navigation and search) but is a lot faster and easier for people who don't have design skills. Maybe you can look at it for your next project.

Honestly, the preference is fastest time to launch with enough flexibility to make the site look like my own. I used a webflow template called Quicksmart and modified it enough to launch my website superlemon.xyz in a few days time.

I think your email subscribers can be very valuable, both for growing the site and for monetization.
It takes some time and copywriting to make it happen, but I suspect you'll see the list as a valuable resource in the future.

Also, the premium templates don't look much different or "better" than the free templates.Is there a way to sort templates, by used technologies?

Hey Bruce - Glad you're considering to upgrade :) Answering the questions:
- Only the premium templates are available in React (plus HTML, Vue.js, and Sketch). The free ones are just in HTML!
- Another difference is the number of pages/components per template. Example, this is a premium (Page 1, Page 2, Page 3), and this is a free (Page 1).
- The templates aren't sortable at the moment, but you can recognize the React ones by the badge premium example.
- I'm not sure about the blog for now, but we'll add plenty of new components soon.

We use a defined number of components for all templates (to keep consistency), so the similarity between them is a direct consequence.
We need to add more components, but you got a good point there!Would focus on this. add easy blog capability to your themes, for a higher price. More features for people who are willing to pay for them

Hey Chris - of course! Each premium template will come with multiple pages and several pre-built components to facilitate the customization process (like mini websites). That's just the base, and we'll launch additional fancy perks gradually (e.g; React-based components).

Hi Chris, we haven't in a traditional way. In the beginning, we've been pretty lucky to get a lot of attention thanks to Indie Hackers, Product Hunt, etc.. but after the initial spike in traffic, we've just focused on developing new resources, because we thought it was the most valuable thing we could do to keep growing.
Generally speaking, we get plenty of traction thanks to our newsletter (approx. 25K subscribers), the world of mouth (a lot), SEO (just recently), and third-party coverages (when we release new resources).
We've also put a lot of effort into our blog recently, but it isn't paying off very well.

Hey David, thanks for the reply :) did you already have newsletter subscribers from another channel, or were they all derivative of the product hunt and IH exposure?
Yeah, blogs are pretty tough to crack, I've worked at a few companies that managed to grow their whole business off the back of a successful blog though.

You're welcome Chris :) No, we didn't have (unfortunately). We've collected the first 1000/1500 subscribers via Gumoard (we've published the first free templates there without even a website), and from that base, we've started growing the list.
What has really worked in terms of subscriber growth, is that we require a social sign-in in order to download any templates from Cruip, so during that process, we ask our users to receive product news via newsletter - 85% of them accept.

Our aim is to provide more value to our users, so we've started working on a new series of premium landing page templates.
After the launch spike, the traffic has slowed down, but we've reached a new important goal: 10,000 users.
We close the first month of activity with 40000+ visitors and 4,898 users.
