Congrats! What did you do to gain the subscribers?

September 8, 2020 Just passed 656,000 Instagram followers

Since my last post over a year ago, I've almost doubled my followers to 656,000 Instagram followers.

In that space I've noticed a few things about growing a following on Instagram:

  1. Content is king. People are lazy. They don't want to create content BUT they need to post new content every day. If you create original content, people will share it and will also credit you. A share = more eyes on your page = more chances of a follow.

  2. Growing a following is 100% harder now than a year ago. Accept that. Nothing you can do. Instagram will only show your content to a small % of your followers. If people engage then they will show it to some more and so on. Another reason to create original content.

Take away: the fastest way to grow a following on Instagram for 2020 is to create original content DAILY. The daily part is important. The algorithm wants to reward the people who post the most. I have multiple accounts and sometimes I forget to post on the less followed accounts. If I leave them idle for more than a week they start losing followers. When I start posting again it takes more than a week for the followers to start growing. So you need to be posting consistently to grow that following. Post. Every. Day.

Hey David, I saw that you passed by my post (https://www.indiehackers.com/post/ill-write-a-blog-article-about-your-startup-struggles-7eaa8dff44). Looking at your portfolio, I could probably write an entire series just about you :-)

Would you be able to make 30 minutes available for a short interview on one of your products/problems that you're solving for your customers? I'm sure there will have been quite some #StartupStruggles that IndieHackers and probably your audience will be interested in.

Can you talk about startegies to build an audience when you are just starting out

Everything I mentioned above applies to people starting out.

Post fresh original content every single day.

You will grow but you need to be willing to invest time.

Also how often if I lost on insta will help me on longer run? Also do I need to use the relevant tags necessarily?

maybe 2-3 # if people like your content they will share via story, dm their mates or other means. make sure to tag your posts for any external sharing outside Instagram

How much money you make from your instagram page through promotion ads?

A lot but I choose to just promote my own products :D

September 2, 2019 Reached 382,000 Instagram Followers

Just hit 382,000 Instagram followers. Since the start of this year, I've grown 282,000 and I'm averaging around 1,300 followers per day now.

I think the reason for the growth is people love sharing content that they find funny and can relate too. When I started designershumor there were no accounts really posting design memes. Posting original content also helped me stay ahead of the copy cat accounts.
