Someone asked me to audit his setup. His opening line was two hours of work a day, everything online, running smoothly. I heard that and assumed the income side was already solved. I was wrong.
Underneath those two hours sat five people, each working at least eight hours a day. The two hours were true. They were also the only two hours anybody credited.
Hours are a downstream number. Two people can both work two hours a day, and one of them has a structure that survives a fortnight of silence while the other has five people waiting on approvals from a single inbox. Identical from outside. Not remotely comparable on the day something goes wrong.
The fix wasn't a sixth hire. It also wasn't as clean as it first looked.

The distinction between company and cover is the strongest idea here. Proximity can create company quickly, but durable relationships need time and reciprocity, which makes the timing of community-building much more interesting than simply finding people after you arrive.
Everyone treats a location independent tech setup as a hardware problem. A lighter laptop, a spare device in the drawer, a better adapter.

It's interesting how often portability gets discussed in terms of work, money, or location.
The argument here seems to be that portability eventually runs into a different constraint.
Not whether you can move.
Whether enough of your life moves with you when you do.
That was the part that stayed with me.
Most people calculate location cost by rent, utilities, food. They never calculate the friction tax — the aggregate cost of unreliable infrastructure, banking that fights you, time zone misalignment, and community absence. It doesn't show up on a statement. It shows up in lost capacity.
