Website chat without the bloat

May 27, 2026 Why I built a live chat tool without CRM bloat

I think live chat software lost the plot a bit.

What started as a simple way for businesses to talk to customers gradually turned into bloated all-in-one platforms full of CRMs, AI features, marketing automation, sales pipelines, and increasingly aggressive pricing.

Sometimes you just want a clean chat widget on your website and a fast inbox for your team.

That’s why I built Knok.

Knok is intentionally focused:

- lightweight website chat
- shared team inbox
- real-time messaging
- simple pricing
- no unnecessary complexity

One thing I felt particularly strongly about was branding. Many chat tools force you to display their branding on your own website unless you pay for one of the highest plans. With Knok, branding disappears as soon as you become a customer.

Today I launched Knok on Product Hunt 🚀

Would genuinely love feedback from other founders:

May 20, 2026 Where did all the simple website live chat software go?

A few years ago, there were loads of lightweight tools for adding a chat widget to a website. Simple products focused on one thing: helping you talk to visitors.

Now most of them seem to have evolved into giant “customer engagement platforms”:

- CRMs
- AI copilots
- automation builders
- sales funnels
- onboarding systems

I understand why. Some companies genuinely need those tools as they scale.

But it feels like the market developed a strange gap where many established products outgrew — and out-priced — smaller teams, while very few new tools appeared to replace them.

That frustration is a big part of why I started building Knok:

About

Knok started because I wanted a simple chat widget for my own business. Not a CRM. Not an AI platform. Not a bloated enterprise dashboard. Just fast, modern website chat with sensible pricing.
