October 16, 2020 Won Jamstack Conf's web app of the year award!

This is so crazy to me, but I found out that Lunch Money won Jamstack Conf's Web App of the Year award!

Jamstack Conf took place online earlier last week and I had actually missed the award announcement due to time zone differences. I found out via the blog post below and a few users had messaged me about it as well.

It feels really awesome to be recognized in this way. It's just the beginning of my second year in operation and this delivered a huge boost of confidence.

Excited to see what's next!

August 12, 2020 1 year launch anniversary & $50K ARR milestone!

August marks 1 year since launching Lunch Money on Show HN. Crazy to think that a year ago, no one really knew about Lunch Money and now I've hit $50k ARR!

This recounting of Launch Day is always fun to go back to: https://www.indiehackers.com/product/lunch-money/got-on-front-page-of-hacker-news-today--LnVqxbaYPHu7vsPBx39

Since launching, I've pushed out an insane amount of new features. Among the biggest ones are CSV importing, developer API, a powerful query tool, a customizable rules engine that powers all the magic behind Lunch Money, cryptocurrency wallet balance syncing, etc. In fact, our public changelog has over 112 entries, averaging about just over 2 per week!

Anyways, there's a lot to reminisce about over the last year and maybe I'll do a bigger write-up later but just wanted to share this milestone first here on IndieHackers :)

    This is a great milestone.

You have built an awesome product, and it shows in the number!

I also think that going the B2C road is an order of magnitude harder than B2B, especially when bootstrapping, so congrats ++.

Hi Alex, did you like the design of my blog/app so much that you decided to copy it for your own gain?

I was more than happy to share and answer your questions (still am) but I don't appreciate that you would steal my design and subsequently lie to me about it. I would really appreciate if you changed your logo. Thanks :)

    2. 1

Yes, please share your marketing funnel. Very interested in learning that

      1. 2

At this point, traffic comes mostly from my blog posts and word-of-mouth. Mentions from people on Twitter, influencers on podcasts, posts on Indie Hackers and in general people sharing my story to their friends drives a lot of traffic. I stopped doing paid ads on Google once I got top position for my desired key words and I run minimal retargeting ads on Facebook. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any specific Qs I can answer!

        1. 1

          That's a great answer.
          Thanks

in general people sharing my story

How can one do that? Assuming one doesn't have a story to share.

I stopped doing paid ads on Google once I got a top position for my desired keywords

is that natural? As in, if I run ads for a page with longtail keywords, will the page start ranking higher on that page?

          Thanks again Jen

          1. 2

How can one do that? Assuming one doesn't have a story to share.

It might be hard to have people share your story if you aren't openly sharing it! I blog pretty transparently over at lunchbag.ca and I send every new Lunch Money user a welcome email introducing myself with a link to the origin story of the product on my blog.

is that natural? As in, if I run ads for a page with longtail keywords, will the page start ranking higher on that page?

I don't think I got the top position because of my ads, rather the ads were a placeholder until I got the top position by other means– mostly being mentioned on high ranking domains and improving my own landing page. I'm no expert here, so I'm not sure how robust this strategy is for longtail keywords.

April 12, 2020 $25k ARR & manually tracking revenue

I'm going to start manually tracking Lunch Money's revenue milestones via IH because the previous Stripe-connected data was implying that my 30-day revenue is recurring. Since Lunch Money offers both monthly & yearly subscriptions, many of our users opt to pay up front for the full year so what we make in one month is not indicative of how much we'll make every month from then on.

With that being said, Lunch Money has officially hit $25k ARR. I will post again at every next $25k!

Historical stats:
Feb 16 - $10k ARR
Mar 24 - $20k ARR
Apr 12 - $25k ARR (today)

April 7, 2020 Launching as a 2.0 on Product Hunt!

Today I'm launching the latest and greatest version of Lunch Money on Product Hunt!

Lunch Money was hunted back in August 2019 and I found out much too late, so I wasn't able to make the most of it. I'm pretty excited to be in full control this time around!

It's crazy to think about how far we've come since that initial launch. A few major features that we've launched since which are now core to Lunch Money include our developer API, our powerful rules engine, a query tool and a CSV importing tool which has been very popular with international users.

I would love your support! Check it out here! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/lunch-money-2-0

    Congratulations! It looks great!

  3. 1

Nice! +1'ed! Was bit surprised as Lunch Money just sent out a decent size request for feedback 4 days ago. Or was that an automated email based on subscription start date ?

    1. 1

Hi Nick, thanks for the support! The survey isn't automated; I send it out every 2 months to all new subscribers from that time period. Curious to know why this was surprising or if there's anything we could have done better. I do recognize that there have been a lot of email from me in the last week, so I'm sorry if it felt spammy!

      1. 1

Ah gotcha. Yeah just like was surprised because I was like wow, gathered responses and then iterated in 2 days and launched a new version :-) . No worries on spam front. I am defensive on my inbox, and haven't felt that way at all from Lunch Money. My only comment/request for feature is about the new rules notifications in bottom left, but detailed in my feedback response. Cheers

        1. 1

Ah makes sense. I try to work fast but alas I'm not that fast! Thanks for sharing and submitting your survey response!

March 28, 2020 Our Developer API is in public beta!

Two months ago (on Jan 31), I sent out the first batch of emails to about 30 users who registered interest in a developer API. Since then, another ~40 users expressed interest in joining the closed beta.

After lots of feedback and continuous iteration, today we are finally out of closed beta! Anyone who is a Lunch Money user can get a developer API token and start developing tools or plugins.

It's been fulfilling to see other developers build on top of Lunch Money. So far, we have 4 open-sourced plugins and three of them involve syncing with financial institutions outside of US/Canada. A few others are readying to be open-sourced!

I'm feeling confident that creating a developer API was the right move in terms of growth and longevity for the product. Hopefully the ecosystem of Lunch Money add-ons keeps growing!

Nice! I've been considering opening up the api for my product. Any learnings or difficulties from your experience that one should look out for?

    1. 3

Great question! I think the best thing you can do is making sure you have the demand and understanding why people want an API. I had an interest intake form that asked specifically what one would want to build on our API. From this, it was easy to figure out what endpoints would meet 90%+ of use cases to roll out an MVP. Continuous iteration and feedback cycles from then on will ensure a successful private beta. Hope that helps, if you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out!

February 25, 2020 Shared my story on the Indie Hackers podcast!

As is the sentiment of any indie hacker granted the opportunity to share their story with @csallen and the greater community, I'm feeling so grateful and humbled to have been able to chat about life and Lunch Money on the IH podcast!

Today, the episode came out on the last day of a 2-day getaway and it couldn't have been at a more opportune time. The time off was refreshing & I was ready and excited to get working again. The release of the podcast episode ended up being the best welcome back gift.

I listened with my husband during our last hour before check-out. The nervousness has finally subsided and I'm excited to see what the response is from listeners.

February 19, 2020 6 months in: sharing my biggest mistakes (so far)

The official launch of Lunch Money was 6 months ago and since then, I’ve been sharing milestones on Indie Hackers, both big and small. But that’s hardly the full picture.

While I like the idea of sharing highlights regularly to keep morale up, I thought it would be a good time to reflect and start a periodic series on the biggest mistakes I’ve made (so far).

The TL;DR:
Here are the mistakes I've made:

  • Having an ill-prepared launch
  • Assuming user sentiment
  • Charging too low…
  • ...and charging too high
  • Offering too long of a free trial
  • Being too afraid to share my story

The article in full and complete with gifs and the lessons learned can be found here: https://lunchbag.ca/lunch-money-mistakes

Great story! It is amazing what one person can get done!!

Mistakes - if you had none, how crazy would that have been?
It would be cool to hear the mistake stories from every founder :)

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. 2

Thanks for reading! We should definitely all share our mistakes more so others can learn from them!

  2. 1

Thanks for sharing your mistakes! Really interesting and insightful to read it)

  3. 1

    Hey Jen,

Your latest conversion :) and I must tell you, I loved the simplicity, design and well thought out features of LunchMoney.

Also agree on one of the reasons to subscribe is your story, I was hooked when I read about your life in Japan. You have done an amazing job and its such an awesome journey to read about.

    Best
    Adi

    1. 1

Hi Adi, thank you so much for your kind words and your support! :D

  4. 1

Thanks for sharing @lunchbag! I also feared sharing our story, thinking that nobody would be interested. But quickly realized part of this journey is sharing it with others.

p.s. Love the website and about us page. "I'm the founder, engineer, designer and customer support at Lunch Money." So relateable! 👍

    1. 1

Thanks for reading! Can't believe how many other people felt the same way about sharing their personal story!

  5. 1

    Wonderful story, Jen.

I tried the app, and found it doesn't fit all my needs, but receiving you support emails and reading you blog I developed kinda emotional connection to your "baby". So, in the future, who knows...

Thank you for sharing all this!

    1. 1

      Hi dimmi!

Thanks for giving it a chance! I'd love to hear what features it's missing if you're willing to share, just hit reply on any of the emails sent to you 😁

  6. 1

when you increased your pricing, did your previous customers also get the increase or did their bill stay the same. Are you using stripe for payments?

    1. 2

Great question, I decided early on that I would allow users to keep their pricing forever. So the first cohort of users are still paying $3 per month! The reason is because I hope to have many more users one day, maybe further in the hundreds or thousands. I really value my first hundred or so users so I want to keep them happy and also making them pay a little bit extra and risking losing them is not worth it to me in the end. And yes, I'm using Stripe!

  7. 1

Hey, I have a question. I was reading on your blog that you started out using Semantic UI. Is Lunch Money still dependent on that? I did research into Semantic based on your blog thinking I should give it a try. I discovered that the main repository is unmaintained. Do you think there is a risk of that affecting your app if it is still based on Semantic?

    1. 1

Hi! Great question. Yes, we're still using Semantic UI, but it's the react flavour of it (https://github.com/Semantic-Org/Semantic-UI-React) which should be under active development! So far I haven't had any issues with it!

  8. 1

Amazing story! Thanks for sharing Jen

  9. 1

    Thanks for the TL;DR. 😀

And congratulations on learning from these mistakes.

Believe it or not, these will be the things that will help you move forward with more confidence and knowledge -- you now have a sense of what works and what doesn't.

You've got the right mindset -- test, try, get feedback, learn and try again. 👍👍

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. 1

      Thanks Anita!

  10. 1

Great read! I tried signing up to your product but unfortunately my bank (AIB in Ireland) isn't available, is this to do with Plaid?

    1. 1

      Thanks!

Unfortunately, we're only able to connect to US/Canada-based banks via Plaid. But we have a few workarounds that have worked well for our international users:

      • We have a manual CSV import tool if your bank allows exporting transactions in that format
      • We just released our developer API in closed beta, and I know some of our users have already built their own bridges to their overseas banks (if you're interested in this, shoot me an email!)
  11. 1

Really nice website! Just keep going, best wishes!

    1. 1

      Thank you :)

  12. 1

Enjoyed that read. I've been eyeing up Sendgrid so forewarned is forearmed!

    1. 1

Great! Good luck on your own launch!

  13. 1

Congrats on your progress so far, Jen. Enjoyed reading your story and some of your head-slapping mistakes reminded me of my own.

I launched an app on Gumroad last month and set the quantity of the 3 different versions of my app to 1 (instead of leaving it on infinite). I was thinking I don't want customers to accidentally buy more, like it was an e-commerce product. I started getting messages from people trying to buy that they couldn't. Then when I looked at the drop-down purchasing menu on my sales page, 2 of the options were greyed out so they couldn't select them. Oops! Just when you think you've fixed everything...

    Keep up the great work!

    1. 2

Thanks Tobe! It's always funny to look back, isn't it? Definitely won't be making such mistakes twice 😂

  14. 1

I really like your about page, always been in doubt if I should have an about page as the jack of all trades for a project. Thanks for sharing!

    1. 1

Thanks! I would say definitely have some fun with the About page to showcase who you are :)

Thanks for reading! Fukuoka is totally underrated!

January 22, 2020 Mentioned in TechCrunch and MacRumors!

This morning, my friend sent me an article by MacRumors about how Apple is now allowing exports of transactions from Apple Card.

"Cool', I thought. That means Apple Card users on Lunch Money will be able to use our CSV import feature to get their transactions in! That's a nice thing to wake up to.

Well, I opened the article to read more about it, and holy crap.

The first sentence reads:

"When Apple Card launched last year, it didn't support importing transactions into various budgeting apps, which was a major negative for customers who use Quicken, YNAB, Lunch Money, Mint, and more."

WHAT?!?! How the heck did Lunch Money, my tiny bootstrapped start-up with less than 200 users get squished in between big names like Quicken, YNAB and Mint?! I was flabbergasted.

I followed the thread and found a TechCrunch article that also mentions Lunch Money!

Things were starting to piece together. What happened was the editor of TechCrunch tweeted a week or so ago asking for alternatives to Mint. Two of our users responded and mentioned Lunch Money. That probably put us on the author's radar and he gave us a shoutout (and a juicy backlink to boot!). MacRumors likely picked up on the TechCrunch article and out of sheer luck chose Lunch Money as an example budgeting app. Loving this combination word-of-mouth marketing!

It was surreal to see Lunch Money mentioned alongside much bigger players in the game! I was in disbelief for much of this morning. 😅

Learnings:

  • Even though our Twitter account only has ~70 followers, so many of our users are on Twitter and are mentioning us! (Surprisingly, most of our traffic comes from Twitter according to GA.) Furthermore, by jumping in to these conversations when you're being mentioned to offer a free trial or just to show that you're responsive is always well-received!
  • Word of mouth marketing is so effective but hard to plan for. I think the best thing you can do is treat your users very well, especially your first few hundred. They will be your champions!

    Awesome job!

@harrydry has written about SEO so you might want to make a page with a title like lunchmoney.com/alternative-to-mint and show how your product is different/better :) https://marketingexamples.com/seo/competitor-comparison

Cheers Pete! Think that could work well.

      And great story @lunchbag

Hey thanks @petecodes and @harrydry for the kind words and advice. I actually already have these pages and have been diligently tracking related keywords for movement! https://lunchmoney.app/compare/mint-alternative and https://lunchmoney.app/compare/ynab-alternative

I'm a big fan of marketingexamples, been definitely picking up things from there here and there :)

    That's dope! Congrats

That's pretty cool. Amazing what a small fan audience can accomplish.

    That's the BIG leagues, Jen!

Congratulations. WOM marketing is hard to engineer, takes very long, but is extremely effective.

    Great story! :)

    Very cool! Congrats :)

Congrats! Totally agree with you. You better have 100 users that are addicted to your product rather than 1000 users that are not really active. Did you handpick your first 200 users [Linkedin, Reddit, etc] ?

    1. 2

Thanks! For sure, and I think that's why having a paid subscription model over a freemium model is advantageous. You can be more confident that your (paying) users are very much into your product. To answer your question, my first 100 paying users came from a Show HN post!

    Such a cool story!

Awesome! Also love the look of the product! Wonderful design.

      Thanks for the kind words!

Well done. It's these small moments we need to stop and appreciate how the world works. I wanted to also say thanks for writing your article about your journey to Japan. Keep up the great work 👋

Hey, thanks for the readership– really appreciate it! :)

  16. 1

That’s amazing, Jen! 🙌 Congrats, and really happy to see you and this news on IndieHackers! I think you’ve built a product that truly lives up to its headline (delightfully simple budgeting), and it’s awesome that your users are vouching for you. Have you thought about implementing a referral program to reward people who invite others to try out LunchMoney/also to encourage more people to spread the word? Not sure if you need it, but just an idea!

Keep up the awesome work, and excited to see you grow!

    1. 1

Hey Amy, thanks for the kind words! We do have a referral program but I haven't been pushing for it as much so I may start doing that again, thanks for the idea :) Looking forward to tracking your journey as well on IH. Cheers!

That's awesome! Such love for your app — doesn't it just make your day? Sometimes I think I'd do it for just the positive feedback...

    1. 1

Thanks! Haha, it definitely feels good but can't let it be a distraction from progress!

  18. 1

That’s awesome! From a marketing point of view you now have bragging rights - “as mentioned in macrumours “. Maybe a good time to outreach to big tech blogs too.

    1. 1

      That's a good point! Thanks!

  19. 1

Congratulations! You picked a great name for an app like this. Seeing your dive into the chain of events is awesome too, gives me more fuel for what I'm doing with opportunistic social monitoring for brands!

    1. 1

Hey thanks! Funny enough, originally Lunch Money was just a temporary working name until I could come up with something better.... but then I never did! Which is great because I really love the name now!

  20. 1

Congrats! Awesome work. One slight user experience problem: I was stuck on the Pricing page for a fat minute or so trying to see if the two tier boxes or any of the text was clickable. It didn't don on me that I was supposed to just register my email with the section below the tier descriptions to get started! I guess I was looking for a link that could get me to some sign-up page? Just something I noticed!

    1. 1

Great point! I just checked Hotjar and I'm seeing that lots of other visitors are doing the same. I'll work on improving that experience. Thank you for taking the time to let me know!

  21. 1

    Excited for you!

  22. 1

Congrats! looked at the product page, no wonder why it got mentioned at TechCrunch and MacRumors. I might steal some of the page presentation ideas (if you don't mind). Cheers

    1. 1

Hey, thanks for the kind words! Happy to hear you're inspired by my designs :) I've been starting to post more on dribbble (https://dribbble.com/lunchbag) so feel free to follow me there!

      1. 1

        Will check it out! Cheers

  23. 1

    Congrats!
Btw: the link to security on "Your data in Lunch Money is encrypted at rest" is wrong. Other than that your site looks good :)

    1. 1

Thanks for the heads up! Just fixed it!

  24. 1

Heyy, congratulations! Any tips for a successful launch for a fellow Torontonian

    1. 1

Hey, thanks! One tip I would have is to not put so much pressure on yourself for that imminent launch. My first planned launch totally flopped and it felt terrible! Then one day I decided for no good reason to post on Show HN not thinking it would lead to anything, and it ended up on the front page for almost the entire day. Things won't always go the way you expect, but just keep going at it, get feedback from users and continuously iterate! Cheers and good luck!

      1. 2

Thank you. You’re an awesome person. Just hope you know that.

  25. 1

Congrats! One of your emails recently got featured in Really Good Emails as well, it looks great.

Congrats! That's super exciting, it's great that your customers are so happy that they're doing your PR for you.

January 11, 2020 Launched new landing page!

It's been way too long since my last update!

Today, I finally launched my redesigned landing page. I've been consulting with a few SEO-savvy friends and ditched the one-pager that I had as my landing page up until today.

I'm quite happy with how the new marketing site looks and I feel confident that it conveys the benefits of Lunch Money well. I already have a few tasks lined up for v2, such as comparison pages with my main competitors. But for now, I'm excited to see how this improves our SEO and conversion rates!

Check it out at https://lunchmoney.app

    Great design. Love it!

Fun story, few days ago I remembered your startup and I was desperately trying to search for it. I didn’t remember the name, so I went on a google spree but after “literally” hours, I knew every budgeting app out there, but couldn’t find launchmoney. Today, here I am, 1am, checking out new updates on IH and BAM.. so happy.

Keep going 🤘 got something great on your hands!

I'm also curious what search terms you were using! Would you mind sharing with me? I followed you on Twitter, but can't DM!

Love the design! I didn't realize the name of the app was lunch money though (used to seeing a logo on the top left on landing pages) but I get the idea behind the name.

Check out your image alt tags, seem to be missing and got you a low score on an SEO audit.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into that!
