The block-based way of doing content
Hey all!
Two weeks ago we launched on Product Hunt. This week, we launched on AppSumo. Needless to say, we've been answering lots of questions coming from new users 😅
I've shared lessons from our PH launch and now I'm following up with lessons from AppSumo!
Here are a few things we learned:
➡️ Power users. On AppSumo you provide very attractive lifetime deals. Some look down on this. However, the people who buy these deals turn into power users and provide excellent feedback.
➡️ Brutal honesty. The feedback you get from AppSumo is usually extremely detailed and honest. It might be hard to read how much your product still needs to improve... But this feedback also helps you grow!
➡️ Positive feedback. The positive reviews you get are also incredible. And they make for excellent social proof you can add to your website!
For us, it was extremely positive. Let me know if you have questions!
P.S: you can check out our deal here
Hey all!
Diogo from Notice here. Yesterday we had our Product Hunt launch and got the 4th place!
We hovered around 2nd at the start of the day, dropped to 3rd, and ended up in 4th! It could have been better, but we're not disappointed.
Here's how we prepared for the launch:
-
Found a Hunter. Alexandre hunted our product. Some say this doesn't really help out much, but we thought it might help us out.
-
Made our visuals pretty. We spent quite some time making our intro video and images look nice to really nail down that first impression!
-
Special offer. We did a 1-day offer where anyone could grab a one month trial of our pro plan. No need to upvote us. The goal is to give curious users a nice first impression!
-
Let our network know. We reached out to friends and network to let them know we would be launching.
And that's pretty much it! If you're unsure whether you should launch or not... do it! You'll always get feedback to improve upon :)
Feel free to ask any questions.

How did you find a hunter? Were they incentivized to hunt your app?
-
1
Nope! Luckily we already knew him through the French startup ecosystem

Thanks for sharing the lessons! Please keep sending updates. I'd specially like to know if the PH cohort churned faster than your organic cohort.

Will do!

FINALLY the tip has come. We had to patch a few bugs before we could do this... It's good to ship fast, but the product has to look good.
I have to be honest with you: I'm a bit nervous. Any tips you have on how to make it a breeze?
Any suggestion is highly appreciated!

I'm now looking at different newsletters in no-code/marketing for sponsorship opportunities.
I believe a lot in this channel. Direct access to users with a super precise targeting: what's not to like about it?
This is how I'm approaching it:
- Contact newsletter, ask for packages;
- Create simple one-pager inside Notice (showcase the product) where I write a personalized welcome letter for the audience
- Sponsor 2 to 4 emails.
Have you tried this channel before? Does this strategy make sense?
Looking forward to your inputs!

We've thought about this deeply.
Even tough we've been growing, we feel like we need more retention, more community. And the only way we see this happening is through manual work.
Here's our plan:
- Engage with creators on Twitter working in tech marketing.
- Create content for communities and regularly help out.
- Help people looking for a CMS to set it up inside Notice, transfering all their content so they have 0 friction.
Any other ideas you have? Open to hear them!

I've been reading a lot about AI lately.
Some say we're doomed. Some say it'll elevate us to new heights.
Many product people warn of the possibility of generative AIs replacing whole products, and of the dangers of making GPT the core of your product. It's a real risk, if you ask me.
At Notice, we've recently added an integration with GPT and DALL-E. Our goal is to have it has a complement, not the basis of our product. And I think every Indie Hacker should think of doing the same.
Our core feature is publishing web content anywhere, as you please, and have customisation options, analytics, and built-in SEO optimisations. But to publish something, you first have to write it. And this is where our integration comes in. It's made so you get leverage, so you can write faster.
Looking at other products, I see the same pattern. Notion and Intercom are just a few examples.
But I want to know - are there faults in my reasoning? What do you think about it? Let me know, open to new opinions!

Notice started as a simple and functional editor for web content. But two months ago, it got a major upgrade. Which made also opened up new acquisition channels.
We revamped the editor, added OpenAI support, and a bunch of new functionalities. The increase in complexity also meant that we now had the opportunity to invest into product-led content.
We were already investing in SEO through the form of normal keyword research. But now, we had endless opportunities in how we promote the different features of the app.
This is similar to what companies like Rows, Figma, Notion, and others have been doing. It's simple to understand - but hard to pull of.
Our focus for the next few months will be to keep investing into this. It'll be a long hike. Results will take time to show. But we're confident this is the way to go.
Let me know if you have any tips on how to pull this off.

For me, SEO is on decline. Sure first time in history.
- I stopped using google search after signing up to chatgpt plus. Why? distraction free UI. marketing noise free.
- Direct hit of website, means the critical LP is even more critical.
- Increase use of preferred platforms of content, discord etc.. versus google search or any browser generic search.
This trend has started so you still have a time-period where SEO is used as the S curve often spans a decade for a fundamental shift. Ultimately depends on open source chat gpt evolution.

Interesting take. How do you advise for a brand to take advantage of AI search?
-

Fav idea so far, for content digest is by @XanderTan. Says "future the news/article ..... will be tailored made for myself, it will be different from yours" in reply to IH post https://www.indiehackers.com/post/lets-talk-about-ai-hype-what-industries-will-change-the-most-54cacbcd70?
Impact on content brand will be significant but in reality a tiny portion of the impact of this revolutionary technology.
Questions I ask others/self:
- What has generative AI now made possible ?? by generation -- from 80 year olds thru the decades, to youngster and children who know no different.
- What are shifts are going on that will boost generative AI impact??
How a brand can take advantage of generative AI will only expand. Already these 2 ways are under utilized with many focusing on gimmicky style AI search apps rather than get its a revolutionary shift. It is an iphone moment. It is not an ipad mini moment (easily digestion of something already exists).
Fm, easiest + immediate actions are:
- Brand shift from marketing stretch-hoods to trust using transparency as tool. Radical shift. Not like Patagonia. They have attempted and failing. Just using more blah blah words on page and no real action. Tally Forms is a great example.
- Brand shift to being associated with trusted platforms. The nature of discoverability will shift to platform based, trusted platforms e.g. chatgpt plus is currently my no1 trusted platform, IH is a trusted platform fm. PH is low trust platform so I stay away from that anything linked to that. Action is review all current copy on your website as of chatgpt plus cut-off and is it discoverable by chatgpt in the way you intended.
- Build in public the shift to transparency, becoming a trusted organisation. It is what it is, no need for long winded whys and wheres... Businesses earn trust when they simple acknowledge and change. This in fact fm was alphabet major failing. They could of retained their lead if they were true to the founder's words. But they did not and did not launch the generative AI they had as they were protecting their cash-cow.
Later, the concept of a transparency indicator and trust indicator will grow so it is much easier for the 'search fatigued' citizen to find (more trusted platform than TrustPilot. open-source version)
nb: IH discussion so far is still narrow (content consumption). IH Post: What will be the incentive to publishers with AI hitting search soon ?https://www.indiehackers.com/post/what-will-be-the-incentive-to-publishers-with-ai-hitting-search-soon-550fd083b9

Our first idea was to reach small business owners and content creators who needed a simple platform to write in and then publish their content.
Here’s what we learned:
➡️ Consistency is key. We started seeing better results when we began posting every day.
➡️ Plain repurposing doesn’t work. We had to create original content for the platform.
➡️ We tried the typical short and quick TikTok format, but found better performance with 2 minute videos going deeper into certain topics.
We’re wrapping up testing and then we’ll decide if this is something worth to keep investing in or not.

We launched Notice 2.0 a week ago, with several bugs yet to be solved.
We lowered our expectations and assumed users would have many complaints - but it was a risk we were willing to take.
And we did get complaints... Just not the ones we expected!
Emails like "Hey, when are you fixing this? Love the interface, please fix it so I can start using it!!"
Now the question remains: are we looking at PMF? In my opinion it's early to tell, but would love to get your feedback on this.

A few weeks ago, we launched our Podcast.
We had three goals with it:
- Have a place to reflect on our journey;
- Share our progress in public;
- Create additional content to fuel our social channels.
And we started executing on goal #3. We created a TikTok account, launched the first videos, and... we had mixed results.
While the first video had a good reach (~3k views), the other videos fell flat. All of them had less than 200 views. We see some reasons for this:
- First video was jumping on the "startup life" tiktok niche, which might be the cause for its success;
- Our format is not apelative (for now) - just snippets of our podcast
We're iterating and improving the videos in several ways, namely:
- Adding subtitles to podcast snippets;
- Creating new styles of videos, showcasing the product.
Will keep you guys updated on this. Let me know if you have any feedback!

I've heard that consistency is a good way to build followers because it will get TikTok viewers to remember your style of content more if its always the same.

Yep. We're going for 5 videos/week right now!

I'm curious to hear more about your podcast!
What is the main subject matter?

We're reflecting on the product we're building, mistakes & learnings, and the state of web content in general (we're a content startup afterall!). You can find out more here: https://notice.transistor.fm/ :D

The reason why your first tiktok video saw a huge 3k viewership is because the tiktok algorithm is designed to motivate new comers with huge viewership to encourage repeat content creation. Keep pumping content. You will soon have that viral video.

That's the plan 🙏 Thank you!

We started Notice after trying to do content marketing - and getting frustated at how repetitive it was. Improving SEO, handling plugins, and making sure everything stayed updated. What if there was a better way?
