1,000 Design Tools and Introducing Prototypr 3

We hit 1,000 design tools on Prototypr, but there's much more!

I began Prototypr around ~2016, and the website was cobbled together pretty quickly. I'd been manually adding tools, and then Sofia joined in early 2019 to help.

Introducing the Prototypr 3 Redesign

As the library grew, and the site popularity, there became a steady flow of people requesting to add resources, and sponsor the site - it became challenging to keep up! Our site also began outranking our medium publication on Google search, which I wrote about here

Sooo with all the demand, an upgrade was due....🥁🥁🥁 Introducing the Prototypr 3 beta! A brand new version of Prototypr - you can now:

  • sign up and submit your own tools and resources
  • bookmark tools
  • have your own profile

The site has been completely recreated with Ann helping massively on the redesign. A preview is available on the subdomain 3.prototypr.io - and it's usable now!

I'm looking into how I can switch this to our main site without affecting the SEO.

Add features with demand

I think the learning here is that I never had a signup or submit form for years. So if you're building something early and think you need user registration and a bunch of other things, maybe you don't. Just add a typeform or something.

Balancing projects

This update was actually due probably last year, but throughout 2019, I was focusing more on creating my email design tool called Letter.

In all, I found it's only possible to run 1 large product at a time, to do it very well. If you're going to do multiple projects, my unsolicited advice is to keep one primary project, and have the other ones for fun. I have 2 big primary projects which can be a stretch. During this lockdown period, it's also challenging in different ways, so I'm very happy to have got things this far.

This is the first time sharing the new Prototypr, so if you get any issues, let me know! *(I know there is no SSL certificate on the beta)

Thanks for reading,

Congrats with the beta, Graeme! I signed up and played a little. The site works super smooth. Great job!
You must be a guru of productivity if you can find time for Letter too.

Prototypr is becoming something bigger than just a media website. It looks like a social network. And it feels that Prototypr is gonna be something big.
What are your plans for it? :)

thanks Alexander! I learned a lot finishing the site, so am looking forward to share those 'how to' articles.

but for now I notice small improvements:

      • adding email notification when someone comments/lies your post, or replies to your comment. At the same time, I don't know if comments will be used much, so not sure yet if it's worth the effort!

      • Also think 'most liked' products and comments in general need to be surfaced better - e.g. 'most popular' in the sidebar would be good, or recent comments..

      • And longer term, push forward on the 'Prototypr Open' stories section. Many people don't like to publish behind the paywall, so this gives a new option for blogging.

THanks for trying the comments, liking system! It gave me the notification idea :D

This is so amazing, @graeme, I just signed up. Also, I like how you're allowing the users to submit their articles via different mediums while you build the editor on the site, don't have to say no to stories while the product is being built.

Thanks Darshan, and I'm really happy you like it and your comment means a lot! Yeah I figured I could just import posts for now - quite a few people already expressed interest in publishing on the site. I'm curious if there will be demand for an editor though...so i will start with something very simple, almost like a big comment box 😅

If you have any thoughts, ping me any time! I wonder how it can be more helpful for others building design related projects like yourself with PD.

Sure, I will definitely share if I've got any feedback and good luck with the migration.

    Looking good Graeme!

The signup definitely has me checking "Why haven't I signed up already?" but your post answered that. Major improvement to the design and navigation. If you're planning on having both run side-by-side for a while, definitely get that SSL sorted.

Thanks Kilian! haha yeah, well there was sign up around 2016, but I took it away cos it was getting spammed! Probably have to think about blocking robots too on those sign up forms. It won't be running side-by-side for too long, maybe just a week..Want to get it switched over asap :D
