I’m super excited and happy to share that Remote Leaf has more than 100 paying customers and hit $1k MRR. This milestone is long due and this is a big one for me. Remote Leaf helps people find the best remote jobs posted anywhere on the internet. It’s been more than 9 months since I’ve started working on this.
Here’s what we’ve been up to recently
- Recreated the landing page - Feedback appreciated 🙏
- Launched the self-service portal for the customers to manage their subscriptions, preferences
- Covered more remote job boards to provide good quality, a large number of remote job leads for the job seekers
Here are the things that worked for us.
- Do things that (don’t) scale — I’ve pinged job seekers on Twitter about this service to let them know about the service and it worked so far. But it’s not scalable.
- Releasing the Hacker News job for free — Every month I’ve been releasing the jobs that I curate from the hacker new who is hiring jobs here -> https://remoteleaf.com/whoishiring. This brought us new customers.

Love the concept, and the landing page looks great! And congrats on the big milestone! A few subtle ideas for improvement:

In the "Not another remote job board" section - there's a lot of text here. Maybe you could break it up into 2 columns. Each has an illustration - a "painful" person on the left and "excited" person on the right. Each column has the same copy, but broken into bullet points with important words/points bolded to break it up.

Form at the bottom of the page - It's a long form. Maybe you could increase free-trial conversion by breaking it up into multiple steps:
Step 1 - email + country
Step 2 - category
Step 3 - email frequency
Step 4 - Pricing Plan
With products I've worked on in the past, there seems to be a pattern of users being less likely to fall off when they feel more invested (in a longer multi-step quiz).
- SEO - have you thought about how to target more specific "X remote jobs" keywords? Like "Remote marketing jobs", etc. RemoteOK seems to do a good job of this. It's a tough balance between SEO optimization and not wanting to give away too much for free...

Reg #1. Yeah, the illustration would be nice. I'm a designer myself, maybe I'll try to grab any open-source illustrations for this
Reg #2. Good idea, I've noted it down and I'm gonna experiment with this to compare the conversion rates :)
Reg #3. Yeah, if I've to do this then I might need to share the jobs for free. Maybe I can give away the companies that are hiring. Do you think something like this will work for SEO? "Companies hiring for Remote Marketing Jobs"

Maybe that could work. You can find out by doing some basic research using a keyword tool. I use KeySearch because it's cheap but there are better ones. Moz has a very limited free tier too. See what the search volume is for those types of terms and what the competition is like.
You might still be able to post jobs, but all jobs and not just curated jobs. This is valuable for users, but not nearly as valuable as the curated service you offer (and it's very valuable to Google).
If you think there's SEO value, you could always run a test for a month - put up some pages and see how conversion rates fluctuate. Projected top-of-the-funnel growth may be high enough to overcome a conversion rate drop, or there might not be a drop at all - who knows.

Congratulations. A couple of minor feedback points. Your twitter account is listed as non-existent. I understand you choose your best trial period but I won't put my credit card number without seeing a sample, it doesn't have to be up-to-date but at least it should allow me to see how the info is presented, etc.

Congrats! Going off this post. Just wanted to give a quick feedback tip- I own my own startup so not interested in remote jobs, but noticed this with your FAQ - How do I unsubscribe: 'Here is the unsubscribe link, I will work with you to resolve it ASAP.' The part where you say 'I will work with you to resolve it ASAP', kind of makes me scratch my head. Makes me think this is actually a difficult thing to unsubscribe, if you provide me with a link and promise to work with me to unsubscribe.. Hope that makes sense and helps clear any future users' confusion! Good luck again.

I just checked out your service, the value proposition seems great. But pricing model is a bit off, I'd say.
To a regular human, your website provides a close to "once in while" service, but a highly valuable one. I'd expect for that to be reflected in the pricing - not a subscription model, but rather a fee based one.
You are doing a very similar job to the real estate agents - you search for jobs to match a client, they search houses that match. But they charge a percent of the buy, not any form of subscription.
There's a high chance that in a week or two your client might find a job through your service. In total, they paid a very, very small amount of money for a service that literally changed their life. And they won't be using your service for a long time (let's say maybe 2 years). There's a disbalance there. So you gave them immense value, yet didn't earn nearly enough. (Calculating human hours spent searching and fee that you charge, I wouldn't be surprised if it was barely making any money after costs are accounted for. It won't scale!)
Tracking if your user has applied for a job and whether it got it so that you can charge at that moment is tricky, I get it. Maybe have them give you all the data: CV, resume, cover, basic data...so that you can fill out and send applications for a job that they simply pick. In a long run, you become some form of a hiring platform. But that's another story altogether...

Can't ask from a user to pay in advance a high price for only a potential of a return value. Imagine real estate charging you in advance, makes no sense.

That not entirely true, Linkedin Premium for Job Seeker isn't cheap, I would have 10/month but maybe in order to receive the responses from employers (if there is one) or more importantly, in order to engage in any further communication - Applicant must pay the remaining ~90/mnth..., or if the hiring organization is in the willing to cover that cost ... each time they move a candidate along your adding that same 90/applicant in revenue but in a more justifiable manner IMO.

Congratulations - that's amazing! I like the look of your service. I would have definitely considered using this during my last job search.
I think it's interesting that someone decided to pay for a lifetime membership. That goes against my intuition about how someone would use a service like this. But thinking on it further, I think it makes sense. They are possibly planning to depend on your service for whatever jobs they look for from now on.-

Hey got my first email and it was a little buggy. You'll see at the bottom of this bug report that gmail says "[Message Clipped]" and the entire email is right aligned. When I click "View entire message", then I see the email centered in a new window. https://pasteboard.co/IRka8lM.png

Ah, thanks for the report. I've tested with diff number of job lists on the email, it happens when the number of jobs is more than 30 and if it's less than that it looks good.
I'll do some more troubleshooting this weekend and see what's wrong.

Today it finally happened! We got our first 10 paying customers 🙌
I’ve introduced Remote Leaf soft beta during the month of September, I didn’t do any marketing, just answering questions on IH actively participating in the WIP Telegram.
I’ve released the free version of my product in Google Sheets and it helped in acquiring few paid users. I’m planning to write a separate blog post about it very soon. Last few months I was more focused on the product, writing the landing page, email automation and curating good quality jobs.
Current Stats
Total number of users: 73
Paying Customers: 10
Few IH users provided valuable feedback to add a trial period and starting today I’m introducing the trial period.

If I may advice you one thing, try to make your subscription form more clear on a mobile device. (I first thought it was just a mail subscription form, but skipped the whole form pretty fast because there were so many options to choose from).
From a UX point of view, I’d make the categories as a select box, instead of radio buttons.

not true. There are many remote job boards like this one some are free, some are subscription based like this one. If you can think of how to improve on this or do it differently by targeting on certain types of users, you can also do it. Compare your idea to this one and see where it differs and try to build it.

Not sure if you have this, but it would be nice to know if the company hiring is entirely remote or not. I'd consider going remote only if the rest of the company was remote. If everyone else is in the office but they're letting me work remote I wouldn't be as interested. This might be more time intensive to research though.

You could write some scripts to look for certain words (at least the first pass), hire some people to lessen the workload etc. Maybe become friends with recruiters who specialize in finding people for remote work? After all, if you sent good candidates to them, they would benefit more than you from the partnership!

Yes, when this becomes sustainable I can hire somebody to take off the burden and focus on the automation or any other work. I still want to manually curate/screen/tag the jobs since it's broken now. May be automation can solve the curation part of it.

Yes because for example in my case, I'm only interested in worldwide job offers for frontend development. Because I'm living in Barcelona but next summer I'll move to Mexico.

Ahh I see what you are talking about. That's a interesting use case. May be you can select whatever country you would prefer in the signup form now and then I'll manually adjust the setting on the backend to make sure you will receive just the worldwide jobs.
Meanwhile I'll think how to implement this in the signup flow, I've been using a python library to populate the list of countries, I'll see how to include "Anywhere" as a option.

Neither of those work together. Product Designer is not Front End development (not even close). You should make Product Designer in one group with UX/UI Designer. Sorry, there's just no way those would work together.

Ah, I see. I'm really sorry for the feedback, Abinaya. I have never used Tailwind — only Bootstrap and Bulma. I used to get the same reaction when I used Bootstrap before! I guess that's one downside for using CSS frameworks — you'll have tens and hundreds of websites using the same theme.
Anyway, what matters most is content and Remote Leaf's content is wonderful. Congrats again!

Yes, I'm planning to develop a sub-product for Remote Leaf, which lists down the huge collection of Remote Companies hiring Remotely in 2020.
That list would be awesome. More and more companies are starting to hire remotely. I can see two value added features which would really help job seekers.
Job seekers choose their skillset and when a company is hiring a relevant position, Remote Leaf emails the users about the job.
Companies who are hiring candidates based outside USA and Europe. Alot of job seekers from Asia and the Middle east face the problem of most companies seeking candidates from USA. With European companies, they are a little more open to hiring candidates from Asia and Middle East since they dont mind the few hours loss in time difference.
