After 12 months of work, we're launching our brand new site.

We're trending on ProductHunt, currently in the top 5... This likely won't last all day, but it feels great to be up there, even for a few minutes...

So, what's new here?

Let's start by sharing our update:

Today, we're proud to share 2,000+ hand-curated jobs that are 100% remote.

Why is Remotive different?

• Jobs are 100% remote. No "only remote during COVID" jobs, we do our best to check.-
  Jobs are hand-curated. No robots, no gimmicks. Just real people using judgment.
• We care. Remotive launched on PH in 2014, we're long-term & full-time bootstrappers.

How is this new?

• Better jobs: We list 5x more high-quality and often unique remote jobs.
• Better search: Thanks Algolia for providing state of the art search! - Better categories: We go beyond Tech, covering Health, Law, Teaching and more...

What happened since our last launch?

• We looked into 29,000+ companies, we publicly list 2,600+ remote companies.
• We built and are lead-scored a database of 22,000+ remote jobs.
• We hired staff who hand-picks the best remote jobs.
• 5x'ed our listed remote-jobs, updating them daily (we have an API).
• New mobile-friendly design and geo-restriction options.

Today is Saturday.

I normally try to avoid working on weekends but today is different. I'm at my co-working space, sitting at the very same spot where I launched Remotive on Product Hunt... six years ago!

That's how the entire project got started. I was creating a newsletter on remote work by working on content nights and week-ends. Fast forward six years later, we're now a remote work job board and community doing fairly well.

But today, I feel stressed out. On Wednesday, Sep 16, we're going back to ProductHunt. We've done some good launch in the past, here were a few:

• 2,128 points in 2015
• 1,492 in 2017
• 1,108 in 2019...

We spent the last 12 months working on this. We built a better dataset, a smoother interface and an overall better website.

I'm excited to share 100s of hours of work with everyone and be able to help more people land remote jobs.

But right now, I'm just freaked out and hoping everything will be ready for launch. Oh, and that it won't break on launch day either ;)

How do YOU cope with pre-launch stress? No matter how many times I've launched, it's still the same dance for me!

I'm getting more disciplined on answering the question "where does our revenue come from?"

Remotive began as a side-project and became a full-time project a couple of years ago. Back then, all we did was selling newsletter sponsorship. Then, things changed. We opened our job board and slack community.

We decided early on to have multiple sources of revenue so that we wouldn't be dependent on any single client. We don't have nearly as much recurring revenue as we should be we're fairly well diversified.

I did some consulting in my days and decided that for Remotive, no single client should be that important to us that seeing them leaving would tank our business.

Slack = our paid slack community
Circle = our paid leadership community
Newsletter = revenue from display advertising on our newsletter
Display = revenue from display advertising on our website
Jobs = jobs sold through self-checkout
Jobs deal = jobs sold where I had some involvement (however minor)
Bootcamp = our soon-to-be depreciated online course
API = private access to our jobs data

We're now more disciplined on following our north star metric: "How many jobs get sold through self-checkout on a monthly basis?". In our experience, the rest follows.

I love ProductHunt, it helped me launch Remotive back in 2014. We've had several launches since.

When I posted our API to ProductHunt earlier this week, I was hesitant. You can find tons of (conflicting) advice on how to best launch on ProductHunt in 2020...

What's allowed and what works changed quite a bit over the last few years. This time, I decided not to stress about it.

We built our brand new Remotive API, which is technical and only interesting to those (developers) who want to serve remote jobs at scale. So I wasn't expecting much, shooting to get a spot within the 5-10th product of the day.

We have a large community and a good amount of goodwill within the community. So, I just had visuals and a description put together that morning and we went live!

Super happy to share we did #4, which means we made it to the following day ProductHunt newsletter, getting us a few more eyeballs.

We did around 500 points on the day, another +100 in the following 48 hours. From my experience, it means we'll probably benefit from a long-tail effect over the next few month to slowly climb to 700 points or more.

That's awesome news, it creates cool momentum around the project and we're hoping to assist even more people to land remote jobs.

What a roller coaster.
At Remotive, we had a GREAT Q1 and then... COVID kicked in.
We're lucky to be in good health and sheltering in place. It allowed us to take a step back and assess the situation.

You know, 30,000+ US tech workers already lost their jobs due to COVID (read more on: https://layoffs.fyi/).

Also, we have sufficient data to say that hiring (remote or in person) has been dramatically going down in April 2020. We're in the middle of an health crisis, also entering an economic one.

At Remotive, our mission is to help tech workers land remote jobs. So, we decided to pause other projects to focus on what we think matter most:

• Serving more high quality remote jobs.
• Serving nearly all remote jobs available.

With that in mind, we sprinted to launch Remotive Jobs API.

Few words on the meta launch:

• For the longest time, we've used a spreadsheet that has been popular. The only problem is that we don't capture traffic back to our site, so we're now trying to host the list on our site.

• I did a pre-lauch on LinkedIn, posting on Friday that i'll share the list on Monday. This worked well, we had 1,000 likes and it built up some anticipation. Also made sure to gather feedback from 10+ readers before hitting "publish" to ensure the article flows :)

Last week we welcomed our 1,400th community member within our private, paid-for Slack group :)

Remotive started in late 2014, our Slack community was launched in June 2016.
300 members joined as beta-tester before we started charging.

We experienced, and are still experimenting with, different price points to see what makes the most sense.

It's an active, virtual co-working space. Folks ask for advice, share tips and hang out.

"Having a tribe" is essential for remote workers. Having folks to turn to when you have questions, need support or wish to share. We have no interest in becoming huge, quite the opposite, our goal is to be the most supportive community out there!

Our members run an optional pair-group where you are matched with another remote worker. We also run a book-club!

I'm always amazed to meet remote workers or aspiring remote workers and seeing how positive and encouraging the community vibe is :)

From a business stand-point, 2016-2018 was a good time to create a paid-for Slack Community. My sense is that it's bound to evolve/be supplemented by more permanent knowledge bases/asynchronous platforms :)
