July 27, 2020 Gave a free license to the German Red Cross

So far Roombelt has been used only by less-known organizations. Recently, the German Red Cross asked me about a discount for them as a non-profit. I responded that I'd be proud to support them and offered a free lifetime license.

I know how much the Red Cross does for people in need and the fact that they are using my software feels great!

That's super cool. I used to work for Red Cross in Spain, as a Bay Watcher. And I know what it is and what they go through...

I am truly sure they are incredibly thankful. That's such a generous gesture from you, kudos.

    Have a great day Mateusz.

The advice to raise prices to maximize profits is pretty prevalent for startups.

However, I'm planning to price my product higher than needed not necessarily to put more money in my own pocket, but to be able to afford to give away the product to the organizations and people doing great things for all of us...

    ...just like you.

    Very cool, Mateusz 👍

December 29, 2019 First $120 license sold

I already have over 30 customers on monthly subscriptions but today I've got the first client paying for a year in advance.

I think it's great because it means roombelt.com is trustworthy enough for someone to spend $120 on my service.

It also means that I will be over $450 revenue this month!

That's awesome! How have you found your customers so far?

I think all of them came from Product Hunt: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/roombelt. The product was on the main page over a year ago and I still get traffic from there. I am trying to generate other traffic as well but with no luck so far.

December 17, 2019 Improved UX

As a result of a request from a customer I've added support for custom tablet backgrounds and it's pretty awesome!

You can pick any background, by just uploading an image in the Roombelt administration panel. I even added a screenshot from a device with a custom background to roombelt.com.

October 25, 2019 Increasing pricing

Six months after the initial launch the product has ~30 business customers and over $300 MRR.

With the functionalities implemented since the initial launch, I feel the pricing increase is justified. I am just about to communicate it with my customers. Hopefully, I won't screw it.

Hey @ziolko, congrats on the solid traction so far! Have you considered offering dynamic prices in different markets? Dynamic pricing could help you earn a lot more from businesses in higher-income areas and also increase conversion in lower-income areas.

After the initial launch, Roombelt didn't have any long-standing users. A few people registered every month but none of them really stayed with the product.

Eventually, in October, one guy was determined enough to give Roombelt a try to send me several bug reports. It turned out that after using it for a few days in a real-life scenario the product just stopped working. This was most probably the reason why others didn't stick to it for longer.

After a few weeks of bug fixing, my first user was happy. If it works for this guy it will work for others as well, I thought. And I was right! Other companies started using Roombelt and they shared a lot of very positive feedback with me.

    Oh, wow. Interesting.

Do you think you could've done anything to prevent that? Do you think some kind of testing before launch would've helped?

I don't have a strong network of contacts and I couldn't test Roombelt in a real office space. I hoped to get an enthusiastic early adopter and this is what happened.

Probably it wasn't the most time effective approach but I am glad it eventually worked!

I've spent about three months to create the first version of the product. I focused only on the most basic use case and tried to deliver a delightful experience there. This was an after-hours project so I really had to focus on the most valuable things.

After three months I had the first version ready to share.

Through the last few years, I took several attempts to create a sustainable online business. Unfortunately, I wasn't very successful. Then I realized that I always tried to come up with a new brilliant idea that will change the world.

I decided to try something else - to take an idea that's already validated by others and focus on creating a high-value and low-cost offering there.

My previous employer used a meeting room display system that was incredibly pricy in my opinion. I realized that this may be my niche.
