RIP Tiers

Well! Today I'm shutting down Tiers. It never quite got a fair shot TBH. But I learned a lot and am glad I gave it a try! Tiers was a tool that I built to solve my own problem (testing SaaS pricing). I learned that it's very difficult to become a part of SaaS companys' pricing flow and price testing does not happen often enough to merit a tool like this. Rather than pivoting or iterating, I'm choosing to spend more time on my existing projects.

Thanks to all that tried it out!

In an interview, Richard Branson shared how he evaluates new ideas:

"When we start a business from scratch, we put our toe in the water. If the water doesn't feel too cold, then we start building it slowly. But if it doesn't feel right, we knock it on the head pretty quickly."

This is a good process for evaluating business opportunities:

    • Start exploring the idea and see how it feels.
    • If it feels right, keep going.
    • If it doesn't feel right, get out quick.

Sounds like you made the right choice!

Thanks Justin. Really appreciate the support!

Still it looks like a good idea !

Thanks Graeme! I think so too. I still feel like this could be something but I may not be the right person to do it.

    Hi Joshua,

thanks for sharing this to us. What is your biggest learning from this which may help others?

    1. 1

Of course! My biggest lesson from this one is that you you have to be prepared to iterate. It's like writing, making something great comes from editing. It's rarely perfect the first try.

Good on you for declaring it dead! I've got some zombie projects around myself and can't quite bring myself to call it :P

As someone else mentioned, any lessons you've learned in this project in particular, or anything you've gleaned from what made Tiers better or worse than your other projects, would be interesting to hear about.

Thanks! I mentioned above; being prepared to iterate is so important! (more on this above)
