A gamified pay-to-rank leaderboard for indie hackers

September 5, 2026 From 100+ visitors to 0 in 3 days: What running a live-bidding ad marketplace taught me

Hey IH community!

A few days ago, I launched TopBid - a gamified leaderboard where projects bid in real-time to claim the #1 spotlight on the site.

Day 1: Went surprisingly well! Hit 100+ visitors via Twitter outreach.

Days 2 to 4: Crickets. 0 traffic.

The throne is currently held by someone who paid $3, which means taking the #1 spot right now costs just $4. But without consistent incoming traffic, people stop bidding because the ROI drops.

My main key takeaways so far:

  1. Gamified AdTech needs constant traffic "fuel" to keep the bidding momentum alive.

  2. Cold DMs work for initial validation, but don't scale organically.

For those who built attention/ad marketplaces before: How did you solve the cold-start problem when traffic stalled?

P.S. If you want to check the current live leaderboard or steal the #1 spot, itโ€™s live at topbid.learts.dev ๐Ÿ‘ˆ๐Ÿฝ

You never forget your first validation. Just got my first $3 bid on Top Bid! ๐Ÿš€ Itโ€™s a small amount, but seeing a complete stranger actually use the product is the best feeling in the world.

August 29, 2026 Just received our first $3 bid! ๐Ÿ’ธ

First real validation today: a $3 bid took the top spot on the leaderboard! It is incredibly rewarding to see users engaging with the pay-to-rank mechanics. Back to building! ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

The first paid bid is a useful signal because someone actually crossed the โ€œpayโ€ threshold. Curious whether the bidder was motivated by the product itself, or mainly by wanting the top spot.

Excellent observation, Aryan! I believe that gamification and the desire to secure first place spoke louder at this first moment. The $1 barrier is low enough for curiosity to win. The challenge now is to prove that this top brings real traffic to keep the wheel turning!
