TurnShift: What, Why & How

What

TurnShift is the easiest way to share duties and manage rotations within your teams.

Leaders, engineering managers, and support folks use TurnShift to distribute recurring tasks via a smart calendar connected to Slack.
You create schedules, assign teams, and get Slack notifications about who's on shift or when it's time to book.

TurnShift business model is a per-seat subscription: you pay for monthly unique active* users (there's an annual payment option too).

Active user any user added to one or multiple running schedule.

Why?

I worked at Algolia for 4 years. Fun fact: the code I wrote there is live on the IH website (it provides the search functionality).

Once a month, I was providing customer support, just like all engineers. And we had a scheduling challenge: how do we efficiently distribute support tasks to 40 engineers?

• Spreadsheets? Nah, boring, hard to maintain, and not connected to Slack (= no notifications)
• Internal tool? Yes! We're engineers. We can build that. And so we did. Maxime built the prototype

After I left Algolia, I thought our internal tool provided good scheduling value to all teams. I took the idea with me and created TurnShift out of it.

How?

Here's the tech tack and mains tools I am using to build TurnShift:

• Next.js & React
• SWR, react-hook-form, Reakit & react-use
• Knex.js & Objection.js for database access, tooling and ORM
• Tailwind CSS & Tailwind UI for the UI
• Vercel hosts the frontend, API, and manages our DNS
• AWS hosts our PostgreSQL and asynchronous jobs (RDS + EventBridge + SNS)
• Stripe billing, per seat with monthly and annual payments. As a European business, We manage VAT via node-sales-tax
• Crisp for customer support
• Figma and Craftwork for any design need and illustrations
