How I got 21k+ views on Reddit for my product launch

Hey Indie Hackers, 👋

I read a post a couple of days ago, that an Indie Hacker got 100k+ views on Reddit after writing in multiple subreddits.

I'm new to Reddit, so I wanted to try posting on Reddit. And it worked for me, I got 21k+ views within 2-3 days on Reddit.

I also got 1k+ visitors to my website Pentaclay and an intro call with a prospective client.

Here's What I did

  • I listed down 7-8 subreddits that support Indie Hackers like us.
  • I tried to browse them all and observe what kind of posts are getting engagements.
  • Also keep in mind Reddit users don't like selling stuff to them. So, I need to provide value through my post.
  • I started writing about my journey, and how I acquired my first client for my design subscription business.
  • I wrote about which social media worked for me, and which mediums I tried.
  • I also wrote what methods didn't work for me, like cold email didn't work for me.
  • Then I wrote what steps/methods I'll try next.

Image

People liked that post and started getting traction right after I posted. Within a day I reached 17.5k views and 17+ comments.

Which Subreddits I tried

I tried writing on multiple subreddits. 👇

✅ r/SideProject (18.6k views)

✅ r/indiehackers (856 views)

✅ r/IMadeThis (474 views)

✅ r/Entrepreneur (1.8k views)

I also posted on other subreddits but they were removed and marked as spam. So lesson learned don't post the same writing on multiple subreddits.

Result

  • 1k+ website visitors
  • I tracked down user behavior through multiple tools. Which button was clicked the most, where I do need some improvements etc.
  • One client meeting, hopefully, he will convert, I'll post if I can get my 2nd client within the first month of launching Pentaclay.

What's next?

  • I'll write a different post today for Reddit. Let's see if I can get a good engagement again.
  • I'll try Hacker News next.
  • I'm already sharing my design works and my journey on X (@pentaclay)

Let me know below what works for you. What are the next steps I can take? Thank you. 🙏

Nice work man! Yeah i noticed you have to publish valuable content and then end it with an option to visit your site or subscribe to your email list.

Recently I've found myself having a lot of success on Reddit too. r/Entrepreneur(37.2k views, 43.8k views) and R/InternetIsBeautiful (71.2k views).

The common theme between them is that they all stories of successful marketing strategies.. like this one i posted today.

So R/Entrepreneur love a great case study / story.. Have you tried making a case study analysing successful sites graphic design? This could be a great way to share your expertise and would be a really interesting read.

    1. 1

Thank you for sharing your insights. This is great to share a case study about graphic design.

But are r/Entrepreneur this subreddit suitable for this kind of case study?

      1. 1

Ill have a look if there's any others that have done it before, but im sure people will find it interesting.

        1. 1

Sure thanks, this subreddit needs 10 karma before you can post.

          Need to get some Karmas.

  2. 2

Very insightful feedback, thank you for sharing it! I tried Reddit to promote my project where auto promo is authorized but the results are low. I'll follow your advice from now on!

  3. 2

I made several posts on Reddit for my new SaaS Holoib. Most of my posts got a lot of traction, more than 4k views per post. One of the posts got 17k views as well.

    1. 1

      Thanks for sharing.

Which subreddits are you posting? Can you please share?

Also, what type of post you write?

  4. 1

    Hey Indie Hackers,

I wrote about how I got my 2nd client and how did I launched my design subscription agency here 👇

    https://www.indiehackers.com/post/generating-1970-monthly-revenue-with-a-design-subscription-agency-within-2-weeks-7e4836e225

I shared which platforms I used to launch my website.

    Thank you.

  5. 1

    Inspired, thank you.

  6. 1

Thank you for the insights; would be applying this soon.

    1. 1

Thanks, share with us your resutls.

  7. 1

Very useful article for promoting our products ! Got nice tip.

    1. 1

Thanks, but remember Reddit users don't like direct promotion. Be tricky and share values.

  8. 1

This is great advice and a framework. Thanks for sharing your results.

Do you think this approach would work for someone like me who is in the beginning stages?

    1. 1

Yes, I'm at the beginning stage. I started using Reddit a month ago. Worked for me.

  9. 1

    Cool, will try the same!

    1. 1

Sure, let us know what works for you.

  10. 1

Thanks for listing the subreddits. I've added them to my list to investigate :)

    1. 1

Sure no problem. Let us know your results. Thanks

  11. 1

OMG that's simply amazing , you got me convinced I am going to Reddit

    1. 1

      Thanks!

Yes sure, but remember Reddit users hate promotion, you need to be careful about that.

      1. 1

True True , shameless self-promotion is only allowed on Facebook

  12. 1

Nice article and insights. I've been trying to be active on Reddit, focusing on subreddit specific to the target audience( young professional and personal finance enthusiasts). I hadn't really considered sharing the trials and errors of our product marketing.

    1. 1

Yes sure go ahead. Follow the rules of each subreddit.

Like r/entrepreneur needs 10 karmas from their subreddit to post.

  13. 1

Nice article and insights. I also have a similar type of service for SaaS development ( which I haven't marketed yet). Haven't tried Reddit before and this will help me to start.

BTW your site is nice and clean.

    1. 2

      Thank you.

I've been using Reddit for this month. So consider myself as newbie too.

      1. 1

        I'll definitely follow your process.

        1. 2

Thanks, share with us what you get.

  14. 1

    Hey folks

I've spent six years in the data science trenches, mainly working with startups and SMEs. My current work is highly theoretical, focusing on enhancing data privacy techniques. Now, I'm looking to apply my skills more practically and help businesses from the ground up to optimize their products and services.

I'm not here to sell anything, just to exchange ideas. If you're facing issues with operational efficiency, or if your product could benefit from some data wizardry or applied math/statistics, I'm all ears.

Is there a single aspect of your business that, if refined, could be a game-changer? Throw me your challenges, and let's talk solutions.

    Cheers

  15. 1

Nice work. I'm curious, did you ever try cross-posting that original post. In the cross-post title/description, you would have to provide complimentary (and of course valuable) information. When I occasionally (key word here) cross-post on similar subreddits, I get traction, both for my original post and the new cross post on the sub reddit.

    1. 1

Hi, I didn't try cross-posting yet. I'm not sure how to cross-post. Let me dig into this.

Can you please explain a bit?

      1. 1

On your Reddit post, you have an option to "Share" the post. When you click the button, you get an additional option to "Crosspost" to a different community. When you select "Crosspost", you choose a subreddit and you have the option to update / change the title/description of the post.

I often add a complimentary title/description based on the type of subreddit I am cross-posting to. Keep in mind that some subreddits DO NOT let you cross post and treat it as spam. Also, cross post on occasion. Cross-post every single post to every sub-reddit will result in the post showing up to a user multiple times and can feel spammy.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

        1. 1

Thanks a lot for your detailed response. I'll definitely try.

  16. 1

I tried Reddit many times but I was never successful, so I'll try this way!

This was very helpful thank you so much!

    1. 1

My 4-5 post didn't work. Only one worked in one subreddit.

I'll explore a couple of more posts in different subreddits.

Plus, you need to actively share value by commenting.

  17. 1

nice share bro.I have create some posts on reddit only in r/SideProject. but every time it's been marked as spam.May be i should change content in my post.

    1. 1

If you promote or use clickbait title/post your posts will be marked as spam.

Also, try reading each subreddit's rules before posting.

Also, read other posts before posting.

      1. 1

        thank you for you suggests

  18. 1

    This is very helpful Kazi.
I always read about how reddit users don't like promotion and I wasn't sure how to apporach this channel. Having a few subreddits helps a lot :)

    1. 2

Hi, yes nobody likes promotion, especially on Reddit.

But you can write about your journey, and how are you getting customers/clients. Provide value in your writing.

Indirect marketing will work, but you'll have some backlashes too.

      1. 1

        Thanks for your answer!

  19. 1

Hey Could you please tell more about what all did you include in your post? Was it just the text - intro about your website or did you have a video too to give an overview of your website? I'm learning about reddit too and your experience can indeed help all of us indie hacker succeed too.

    Thanks too

    1. 1

Here are a couple of posts/formats that I tried 👇

✅ Just wrote about my design subscription business, how it works, benefits, etc.
      (Didn't work for me)

✅ I made an explainer video for my service and posted that. (Again didn't work)

✅ Then I got my first client from LinkedIn, so I wrote about that, how I got the client, what platforms I tried, what I posted on each platform, and what the next steps I'll try. (That worked but only on one subreddit)

Hopefully, this will help. You need to provide value for the readers, blunt promotions won't work I think.

  20. 1

    Have you got any clients?

    1. 1

I do have one client, but I got them from LinkedIn.

I got an into call with a client that came from Reddit.

  21. 1

Hey Erfan, did you publish the same post in all subreddits?

    1. 1

Initially, I did, but that was marked as spam.

So I would suggest not to do that. In stead, you can rewrite the same post, and try posting with a different sub reddit.

But that didn't work for me as well, only the first post went viral.

So my suggestion will be to write different posts for different subreddits.

      1. 1

Thanks. I'll make a few changes everytime I post on a different subreddit.

      2. 1

What did you do once your post was marked as spam. Will the account reset or did you create a new account?

        1. 1

I didn't do anything. Just deleted the post. May be too much spamming will ban the account.

I'm not doing this again, good learning curve for me.

  22. 1

I was planning to launch in reedit too. This is what I'm needing. Thanks for sharing

    1. 1

Most welcome. Any time. I'll be sharing my next post within a couple of days on Reddit.
