Welcome to Indie Hackers! ๐Ÿ‘‹ (November 2019)

Courtland here. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community for people building profitable Internet businesses. The key word here is "community" โ€” to get the most out of IH, you'll need to speak with and learn from other IHers. Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself in the comments below. Just say a few words about who you are and why you're here.

Then say "hello and welcome" to someone else. I promise they won't bite. ๐Ÿ˜‡

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend starting by reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible and the huge variety of paths that different people take.

(I also put out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing.)

Every founder begins with a different level of knowledge, but learning never ends. It's good to do a little bit of reading upfront, but don't get stuck in a pure learning phase for too long and let that hold you back!

Next, get started!

Once you've got a little knowledge under your belt, the best way to learn is to do. And there's no better time to do than right now.

Take a look at some of the products your fellow IHers are building.

And while you're at it, create a page for an existing product you're already working on, or perhaps for an idea you have in the back of your mind. It doesn't have to be perfect. In fact, it's better if it's rough and simple. The important thing is take at least a small baby step to getting started.

Your product page is a great opportunity to get some practice building in public. If you want others to care about what you're up to, one of the easiest ways is to share the story of what you're building as you build it.

If all you have is an idea at this point, that's fine! Make a post on your timeline about the idea, how you came up with it, and/or why it excites you.

Pick the part of the community that resonates.

The Indie Hackers community is vast. Here's a brief summary of the different ways to participate:

  • Do you enjoy looking about other IHers' products and helping them celebrate their wins? Take a look at all the milestones that people are posting.
  • Need some help with a decision you're making or a project you're working on? Ask for help on the forum, and feel free to tag someone you've seen helping out in other people's posts.
  • Got some lessons or advice to share? Make a post on the forum. The better the advice you share, the more followers you'll get, and the more people will read your posts in the future.
  • Craving some in-person interaction? Head to a meetup in your city, or start one of your own.
  • Interested in a particular topic or specialty? There are lots of groups for you to join, with new ones coming every week, e.g. Developers, Growth, Digital Nomads, Podcasters, and more.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but I hope it helps you get started!

If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group and tag our community manager, @rosiesherry.

Don't forget to introduce yourself below! ๐Ÿค—

Gerald here with grepmed.com - Physician and former software engineer trying to create an image based medical reference platform. If there's any other indiehackers in the medical or B2C space who'd like to exchange feedback or ideas, please reach out!

    1. 1

Just a med student but i'd like to connect as well.

      1. 1

Hi there! Good to see more medical people on IH!

    2. 1

      Hey Gerard!

My name is Jevaughn and Iโ€™m a new IH in the medical space and hope to connect with you!

      1. 1

Hi Jevaughn! Good to see you on here- have you launched your product yet?

        1. 1

Yes I have. I created a platform for minority students to learn how to better their studying methods as well as navigate the application process for various healthcare professionals

          1. 1

cool ๐Ÿ‘ is this a website online? You should add it as a product to your IH profile.

            1. 1

              Yes it is!
Iโ€™m still working on that ๐Ÿ˜… but it should be up very, very soon on IH but the link to it is this:

              twelve28acs.wordpress.com

        1. 1

very much enjoyed listening to your founder interview on your podcast ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

          1. 1

Ah thanks ๐Ÿ™‚. It felt very meta! Looks like youโ€™re doing some awesome stuff. I occasionally find myself on your site when Iโ€™m looking for imagery.

Excited to be here! ๐Ÿ˜Š Hi, I'm Chris and I'm an all-in-one app creator. All-in-one means that I'm developing and marketing my current project "Moodistory" (https://moodistory) all on my own.

I'm here to get involved and I'm looking forward to connecting with likeminded nice people! Oh, and since you are already listening: Check out my mood tracking app at https://moodistory.com - I'm currently looking for feedback to further improve my app.

Cheers and see you around! ๐Ÿฅณ

    1. 4

Welcome Chris! Just joined today as well. I checked your landing page and my first impression is that the app looks very well designed and approached in an original way, congrats on the project!

      1. 1

Awesome - thanks for visiting and your feedback :-)

    2. 3

      Hi,
      I just joined today.
That's a fun looking app. It looks very appealing and content is well organized. Cool icons.

      1. 1

Thank you, IndieHacker2332! Glad you like my app's look! :)

    3. 3

Just joined IH. Incidentally I was looking for an app like yours. The color palletes are a good idea to map the various levels of moods.

      1. 1

Cool, thanks for checking out my app! If you try it out - please let me know what you like and what should be improved! :)

        1. 1

Oh I thought it had a trial version. Its difficult to get feedback when users have to pay first before evaluating. Is its possible for you to have a try before you buy system ?

          1. 1

I thought a lot about my monetization model and then decided to go with the payed model. So far, I think it fits quite good. But yeah, itโ€˜s harder to get feedback... Especially on platforms like the one here. But I try to provide as much information about my app as possible on the App Store and via my website. So people get a good idea of what they get when they pay. :)

    4. 2

Hey! I like your Year in Pixels idea, that would be good to look back on - if only to appreciate the positive days that we forget. It looks like you've focused on trying to make it as easy as possible for a user to make an entry, which is great. From looking at your homepage it's also very clear what your app does. I don't think I'd use your app, although I can think of a time in the past where I may have. Good luck with it!

      1. 1

Cool, thank you for your feedback! :) Just check out your profile - all the best on your way to work full time on your own digital products! :)

    5. 2

Nice app! I'm an android / desktop user so I can't try it but I've been looking for something like this for a while. Really nice UI & brand.

I just joined today, my app is actually almost 6 years old, it's yet another todo app, https://www.raize.it/#!/

Hi everyone, I'm Steve from Bloomington, IN. I work as an electrical engineer and am starting to build a system to automate the growing of microgreens and baby greens. The system uses Arduino to collect sensor data, and sends it to a Raspberry Pi based server. This data is used to make decisions about turning on pumps to regulate the hydroponic environment. I also plan on incorporating machine learning so the system can learn and enhance plant growth.

    1. 1

Hi Steve, very interesting work. I was also at some point interested in developing more like a smart greenhouse with all the automated controls. In fact, I had bought some temperature and humidity sensors and a portable humidifier as part of the project. Well done. I would be glad to share any ideas that come to mind as you progress. By the way, I will check if I can still find these devices in case you could find them useful.

      1. 1

Thanks. I am still trying to figure out the best approach to take for a solo entrepreneur for this project. It may be creating a course, or developing a web app to enable people to monitor/control their system. I will create a website and keep everyone posted on my progress.

    2. 1

Interesting idea Steve! I'm also from Bloomington :)

I probably won't have time to contribute to your project, but I'd enjoy learning more about it sometime!

      1. 1

Thanks. Nice to know there are some local people on the site. I will create a website and start sharing progress in the next few weeks.

  4. 3

Hi, I like this on-boarding experience. Props!

    1. 1

It's new and seems to work well, thanks! :)

  5. 3

    Hi IndieHackers!

I am Ishay, a startup mentor from Israel (Horizon 2020, TechStars and MassChallenge).
I'll be happy to share my expertise and by chance learn if my own hustle may be helpful for you.

I run TimelinesAI - an app for teams that have a lot of communication across different apps and channels. It helps to capture, organize and share access to the most important messages from email, Whatsapp and Slack with the whole organization or selected teammates.

  6. 3

    Thank you for this!

  7. 3

Hey, Nuku with sellgraph.com. Finance guy who recently became a full stack self taught dev. Still learning, but it's been a fun journey. I'm working on back office as a service for growing SaaS companies. Busy founders can outsource accounting/bookkeeping /hr/payroll/it admin. I'm looking to learn from and share with the community.

    1. 1

Hey Nuku, I am in finance (well sort of..) nice to meet you!

      1. 1

Hi Jake, good to meet you!

  8. 2

Hi I'm Joyce, backend developer. I am currently working on a project and cannot wait to share it with this community.

  9. 2

Super excited to join this community. I stumbled upon it quite randomly while going through a HN post by @lynnetye. That post inspired me to my core and here I am. My name is Dinuka, a backend web developer located in Sydney, currently in the healthcare space. Have been procrastinating an idea of starting my own blog after writing on Blogger and Medium for a while. Still in the process of getting it into a decent state and would love to share it with you guys to get any feedback good and bad :) .. Looking forward to meeting like minded people in this community!

    1. 2

This makes me so happy!!! ๐Ÿค— Welcome to IH, Dinuka! ๐Ÿ‘‹

  10. 2

This is a great onboarding experience. Very clean and lean!

  11. 2

Hi everyone, I'm Akram an aspiring developer who wants to become a backend developer, I chose backend development because I love working behind the scenes and deal with data, data is awesome!
I'm here to learn from others and of course help whenever I can
my main goal right now is to get REALLY good at backend development so that I can start relying on my own instead of being 100% dependant on my parents

    1. 1

Welcome Akram! I just joined today as well, and I'm also a back-end focused developer, at least for the moment!

  12. 2

Hi everyone, I'm Vlad. I'm created artee.ai - endless store of ai generated tees. We won some awards with this (pytorch global hack).
Now also working on other fashion related projects, so will be happy to discuss and listen feedback.

    1. 1

Hey Vlad, welcome! I also joined IH today. Congratulations on the project, looks very cool!

I'm actually very interested in "automated merch creation" projects such as yours. In fact, today we launched a basic webapp that allows users to create a t-shirt featuring the trending "pointing emojis meme" with a custom message, you can read about it here:

      https://www.indiehackers.com/post/how-would-you-promote-a-project-that-is-based-on-a-social-media-trend-e8b2126afe

And you can check out the webapp here: http://pointingemojis.herokuapp.com/

I see you are using Teemill as the POD provider. Did you manage to make their API work properly? I can't proceed with the checkout of the products that have been created using the API...

      1. 1

yes, it works for me. they have very bad documentation but it works and they ship printed stuff.

        1. 1

          Okay nice, thank you!

  13. 2

    Hey,

My name is Iulian and I am a software engineer based in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

I founded https://www.mockless.com/, a tool for rapid prototyping and mocking APIs. It helps development teams to decouple the frontend team from unfinished features by creating a fully functional mock version of the backend within minutes.

    1. 1

      This seems very cool!

  14. 2

Hi, my name is Andrea De Lorenzis.

I'm an aspiring self taught full stack developer and entrepreneur based in Italy.

I started coding 4 months ago and right now I'm looking for a job to gain some experience and save money. After that, I want to go freelance or work remotely, because I really like the idea of working from anywhere in the world (near a beach if possible ๐Ÿ˜‰). Finally the last goal in my ambitious list is to become an entrepreneur and start my own business or startup.

So I'm here on HackerList to share my journey and get inspired by all of you!

    1. 1

I like your idea of working remotely from a beach! :D All the best in your journey!

  15. 2

Hi! I run an accountability network called Better Together (www.bettertogether.group). I'm also a full time front-end engineer and digital nomad. Soon... Better Together will be my full time gig. I'm here to learn from others, share my knowledge, and help make my entrepreneurial dreams come true as quickly as possible.

    1. 1

Cool idea! Seems like it's value will start to accelerate as more people start to work remote and have less common places to meet other people with similar interests.

      1. 1

it feels like it... i think there's also this trend of more freelances / entrepreneurs that will also be interested in systems like this to help them be more efficient and productive.

  16. 2

Hi Indie Hackers, I am Anjail from Washington DC. Co-founder of an e-commerce start-up company and a self-taught developer. Looking for some freelance dev opportunities and also network with women in tech. Happy to be in IH, hope to collaborate and learn from here.

  17. 2

Hey gang. Ian here with quirkycapital.com. We're looking to partner with nocode and indie hacker founders to accelerate growth. I'm "eating our own dog food" so to speak, and intend to document our journey

  18. 2

I'm Desmond. A developer based in Berlin currently building hevyapp.com. I left my cushy job a few months ago to start building my own product. Just stubbled across Indie Hackers and i'm already blown away by how friendly and open the community looks. I specialise in mobile app development and would be happy to help if anyone had any questions in that area :)

    1. 1

This seems exactly what I was looking for. I will give it a whirl! :)

  19. 2

Hi everyone! I'm Dani from Bristol, UK. I'm building a bookmarking and linksharing application which I'm super excited about - and I'm here because I'd love to get some feedback from this awesome community, and also to see what others are working on and share ideas :) please say hi :)

    1. 1

Keen to see what you're working on, Dani!

      1. 1

Hello :) I'm working on www.dodoodem.com - you can sign up free and check it out, would love to know what you think

    2. 1

Hi Dani, Iโ€™d love to learn more about your app. Link sharing is an important feature of a product in working on and we arenโ€™t totally satisfied with our current solution. I look forward to connecting! -Alex

      1. 1

Hi Alex!! Drop me an email on [email protected] :)

  20. 2

Hello fellow IHers! Nice to meet you all. My day job is in sales at GitHub, where I have learned a ton and have had a great time doing so. I am excited to build a little side project (though I am not entirely sure yet what it will be). Consider this my hello_world!

  21. 2

Hello - I'm currently at a potential transition point in my career looking for some inspiration on alternatives that will allow me to leverage my skills (as an accountant and small business consultant in Canada ) and create something a bit more tangible . Mostly a lurker for now...

    1. 1

Hello Ronika, good to hear from you too...Also in Montreal. Just joined today. Perhaps someday we could arrange a meetup for all of us in Montreal.
As an idea for something next...perhaps an app...Just think of the big problems you have experienced in your profession and how to automate solving it...

    2. 1

Hi Ronika, great to hear from someone who is in Canada.

  22. 2

Hi all, I' Omid. I am a product designer based in San Francisco. I love the vibe and energy of IH and really looking forward to learning and exchanging ideas.

  23. 2

Hello all! I am founder & CEO of ContentCal, a SaaS platform for SMEs to plan and execute content marketing. We've raised $3.2M to date, $1M in ARR and growing. Excited to be here!

  24. 2

Hi Indie Hackers, I am Paula from Canada. Looking for a career change, I am at the very beginning of it all. Want to become a self-taught developer and do freelancing projects. Happy to be here, thank you for having me.

  25. 2

    Hey,

my name is Matt and I've created https://sensewp.com

After many hours and a big effort on optimizing the service and iterating over the feedback to make everything much better I'm proud to announce a release of SenseWP.

    How is that different?

Not only we managed to outperform every WordPress hosting provider in price and speed comparison but now you can create up to 10 websites with a single subscription. That's the best deal you can find on the internet. No other hosting provider can offer anything even close to that.

    1. 1

Hello Matt, seems like a nice product. I just checked it out.
Most people starting out with web-hosting want cost-effective solutions if they can't find one that is totally free.
So what is the next milestone in your product development journey?
What is the most urgent support you need now to get to that next milestone?
From the little I know, web hosting is like a marriage and people want to avoid divorce at all cost since it could be messy. That is why people want to have credible Webhosting providers right from the onset. So getting credibility for your service is probably going to be your biggest challenge. So how do you plan to achieve that so that you can then market this product to a wider audience?
Sorry, Matt, these are all questions and no answers but the first step towards getting answers is asking the right questions...All the best.

  26. 2

Hi there, this seems like a great community of builders. Looking forward to share and learn about human-focused marketing, legendary products that help us evolve.

  27. 2

Hello, I'm Novi aka technopreneur. I am a software developer and entrepreneur working on several startup projects as well as a consultant.

BoostLane.com is an e-commerce marketplace with services to help traders boost their sales - such as multichannel API synchronization between BoostLane, eBay, Amazon and other stores (this project has been making money for more than a year but is still not ready to officially launch as a SaaS; it should be ready by January 2020. This year as been mostly about improving performance so server costs do not spiral out of control).

Harvesteer.com is an AI tool that reads websites and creates news feeds and analytics based on user preferences (the website is not ready but the first version is running as a command line software with an API, producing news feeds for two websites so far).

discoor.com (oo as in don't shoot!) will be a Forum as a Service platform (exisiting forums will be migrated to the domain name soon...). People chatting and contributing content will always be one of the main activities on the Web. This is a beautiful forum by the way, fast and user friendly; it's going to be my new source of inspiration, if you don't mind...

I enjoy taking time to build and improve these projects... I try not put myself under unecessary pressure. My startup philosophy is: as long as you have a working product, low overhead and a few users, you can use their feedback to keep improving and pivoting until all the stars are aligned and growth accelerates. Many startups are a few years too early - or too late if the founders are stubborn.

I am here to network with people who dream big, make things and make money - it does help. I am open to all kinds partnerships and collaborations provided I can find enough time. I also finance my projects by working on other founders projects so they can make progress.

  28. 2

Hi, newly joined here. I'm a software developer for 21+ years (since 1998). I've got several web-based startup ideas and registered domains but have been too scared to get started on them--like, really get started on them--without a support network. So I'm hoping I might pick one and see what comes of it? As a developer, I'm a builder, and my intent is to build, and invest in whatever assets are needed to fill in pieces I can't fill, and hope to make money from it. That's what all of us here want to do, isn't it? ... Is it?

    1. 3

One thing that works for me when I'm struggling to get started is to pick the simplest "vertical slice" and work on that. In other words, get just one single feature working from end to end and deploy it.

  29. 2

Thanks for making us feel so welcome Courtland!

  30. 2

    Hi all!

New to IH and just wanted to introduce myself. Basically, I have no background in comp sci or software development, but have always loved building things. As of yet, I've been marching down the path of self-teaching and immersing myself in every online teaching outlet from Codeacademy to Freecodecamp etc. Looking forward to engaging with the IH community and learning more about coding so I can build something cool in the future! Cheers!

  31. 2

Thoughts are to niche down focusing on a specific market (sport trainers/coaches). Good luck everyone!

Hey all! I'm a front end designer/JS developer working with React. The dream is to be working full time on my own digital products! I've co-created a typography design tool called Archetype (https://archetypeapp.com/) and designed and developed a personal organizer/productivity app called Yourganize (https://getyourganize.com/).

I like listening to others experience in starting their own products and hearing success (and failure!) stories to learn how to improve in making online products, and I would really like to be in touch with more developers and designers to share thoughts and ideas.

Hi there, I'm David, a developer with interests in machine learning and text classification.

My current project, https://podcatr.com, is a podcast directory powered by machine learning. I'm looking at the podcast discoverability problem, trying to automatically classify podcasts into increasingly specific categories. The idea is to make it easier to find the (massive number of) podcasts that don't show up in the tip-of-the-iceberg popularity-driven directories.

Would love to connect with anyone interested in machine learning, natural language processing, and/or in the podcasting space.

Hello everyone, I just stumbled (no offence) on this group in my search for some answers today. Oh, I am already loving it...
I am here to learn about starting successful online businesses and this place seems to have lots of the people who have or currently doing the stuff I am doing and some others I want to do. So here I am. I am based in Montreal, Canada.
My major interest is in the development of e-commerce marketplaces and commercial apps. I have a project management background and so would be more interested in the business side of things. That means I will be looking at collaborating with the very bright minds I know would be reading this and I would get to meet soon to help me with the technical sides.
    It is me,

Chris here with firsthomewin.com (it's not launched yet, but I'm building the website soon). Basically, I've been in growth for my career the past 4 years, but have been an entrepreneur my whole life and am ready to branch out and do my own thing. I'm building firsthomewin.com to help first-time, millennial homeowners with the major financial decisions that go into home ownership - buying, renovating, renting, and selling, The idea is still in its infancy, but as a first-time home owner, I've ran into a ton of issues that I want to address for others in this crazy process. Really here to learn and get connected with other like minded entrepreneurs trying to build bootstrapped companies.

Hi, Tom here. I signed up yesterday after stumbling upon everyday.app by @mezod. I actually reached out to him over email to ask if his app was generating any income and he was kind enough to get back to me and point me to IH.

I had never heard of IH and so far it's the most exciting thing I've seen in a long time. I love the idea that we're all working independently but as a network of peers to achieve our goals, and that the culture isn't one of stealing other people's ideas nor is it "get rich quick" schemes like drop-shipping websites.

My cousin and I built Raize (https://www.raize.it/#!/) about 5 years ago, initially as a business tool, but we scaled it back when we realised we had over-engineered it in every way imaginable. I'll post a longer story about Raize and my other projects soon. I've previously raised โ‚ฌ120k of angel investment for another project and I have some great success stories there in terms of acquiring users as well as the story of why this project ultimately failed.

TL;DR - I'm excited to become a part of this community.

    Tom

Hello IH ! I'm Leo. I love to work on fun projects in my free time.

You can read about 2 of them here:

Looking for my next project atm.

I'm joining IndieHackers to mostly share my experience starting sitebase.co (we make websites faster). If your site is slow you may be a good fit for beta user or our free tier! Also want to learn how to find new customers. Joining this community may also increase my accountability with things I don't always want to do, like talk to customers instead of coding :) My background is in finance but have transitioned to more engineering.

    Hey,
    Rishabh here from India.

I aim to ship one or two products in next up coming months. And for the same, I've been also learning full stack development on the weekends.

    Hello Indie Hackers!

    Iโ€™m Arran of designsystemdigest.com.

Iโ€™m a designer and developer by trade, and hugely passionate about the intersection of design, technology and business.

I started designsystemdigest.com as a passion project with a view for it to provide some additional income at some point.

At the moment, itโ€™s a weekly email digest, summing up the best articles Iโ€™ve read that week on design systems. In the future I want to curate resources, jobs and events to build out the community.

Looking forward to sharing my progress here!

Hi! My name is Mateusz. I worked for 3 years as front-end developer. Currently I am learning machine learning intensely, while working in new job as junior data scientist.

I would love to create my own company - this has been a dream of mine for a few years now. But I was always waiting for a "good moment". I am sick of waiting - I want to take action & do something. I hope this community will lead me in a good direction! :)

Hi everyone ! I'm Sacha, a 24 years old full stack developper from France building a cross-plateform Japanese learning app, via Flutter (web, desktop, mobile). The MVP is almost ready, it is lacking the dictionary part. I'm starting a full time back-end job in January, so I have two months to experiments on the next advanced features (prononciation recognition, OCR, audiobooks, ... ). I'm freelancing for now to make some bucks.

I don't like buzz words but I really like to use AI in my products. I really would like to build a community around my product and let them decide on the roadmap. I'm here to share my little wins, get some feedback and hopefully make better decisions. I'm looking forward to learn from successful founders and be part of the community.

Andrew here, mechanical engineer by training, but super enthralled with the idea of becoming a fullstack developer. I'm obsessed with various mobile app ideas I have in the Orienteering world (map + compass + woods = fun). I've been trying to teach myself how to code for years, and have gotten pretty far learning React, React Native and GraphQL to build...well...build test apps. Think I'm holding myself back by trying to build everything myself, and am eager to see how other bootstrappers get to an MVP and making some money while holding down a 9-5 job...and not losing their partners in the process...

  118. 1

Eric here. I'm a web developer who loves hacking on side projects in my spare time. Excited to be here!

Hello. I'm Patric. I'm a software developer and investor. I recently got into learning about investing and the different strategies out there. My personal goal is to share my journey with everyone else who is also interested in doing investment in the stock market. I'm a true believer in Rule 1 investing, an investment strategy deriving from value investing taught by Ben Graham and Warren Buffett. After reading Phil Town's Rule 1 Investing book, I took everything he taught and made it a web application and put it online. Hopefully it will help anyone who's interested in Town's investment strategy. You can find the app at https://valuasion.com.

Thanks and wishing you much success in your pursuit.

Hello, indie world. After 15+ years of designing and managing digital products for startups (and agencies) this year, I left my fancy job and hit the venture road myself. (https://natannikolic.work)

I am in the process of founding a remote-first EU tech coop and assembling a SWAT team of indie-maker partners with 360ยบ expertise. Part one is growing our portfolio of digital products/services. Part two will be opening the coop membership for other indie makers in need of resources, knowledge and other forms of support on their journey.

Iโ€™m here to help, learn, meet great likeminded people and perhaps even find missing team members. Feel free to reach out and say hi. ๐Ÿ––๐ŸปNN

Hey everyone, I'm Brian. With all the advancements in AI and worldwide labor commoditizing digital services, I'm taking my 3D architectural rendering company 3DAS.com (started in 2006) to more of an iterative process (from the schematic design phase to interactive / VR). If there are any architects and interior designers out there, I'd like to talk with you.

Hello IndieHackers! Pleasure to be here. I was recommended by Ezra at Appointlet.

I run a multi-location music lesson business in Nashville, TN ( guitarlessonpros.com ) and I'm running into some issues with SEO and changing domains because Squarespace is greatly limiting my options even in developer mod. Here are some things I'm doing with my business currently:

    • Trying to switch the domain stats from the previous website to the new one but squarespace won't let me add basic 301 redirect codes! So frustrating. So I'm not sure whats going to happen on this front. I've informed google via the search console that the site has moved but you're supposed to have the 301 redirects setup. It does point to the new site but not as a 301. So not sure if google will pick up on this...

    • Also trying to add business/location Schema Markup to each location's unique page on the website but squarespace won't allow that either! It's all because of the way they do their servers.

    • I'm working with a company called RankPay for $150/month and they are boosting me on 5 top keywords that I researched people are most likely to type in for guitar lessons in nashville.
So far, it's been pretty great results compared to spending $350/month on google ads. Only been going about 6 weeks though.

    • I've also been optimizing my site in every possible way I can. Starting to blog a bit as well since google likes that.

    • Also, changed the name from West Side Guitar to Guitar Lesson Pros for multiple reasons. Google clearly gives map listings way more juice if there are matching keywords in the title. It's kind of ridiculous actually. Before I made this change, there were several business ranking above me in maps who had no photos, no website, no reviews, no description, no posts...just a phone number and name like "Guitar Lessons Nashville" and because of that google thought it wise to put them first...so hilarious. Whereas my West Side Guitar listing has all of the above plus 17 five star reviews. We also have other locations now so West Side was getting confusing. I've already seen a boost in map rankings just from having them named differently "Guitar Lesson Pros Nashville - The Nations"...for example.

    • Also, I'm submitting my primary location through Bright Local to get consistent citations built up across the web and with aggregators. This should help a bit.

Would love any feedback you might have!!! Happy to be here.

    Cheers
    Trevor

Hi all - Tim from tryclicker.com here. A friend and I are hacking together a product that ensures the best sports are always on TV at bars and restaurants. We created an app that lets you change channels from your phone, and grew that into an additional a product that manages the rest of the TVs by scheduling games to be on at the right time (taking into account local preference, live scores, matchups, etc.).

We do this by running a raspberry pi on the local network which talks directly to the DirecTV boxes.

We are live at a few locations in Cincinnati, and looking to get connected to more potential customers (sports bars, breweries, restaurants that have a good amount of TVs). Thanks!

    Hi Everyone!

I am new here - to the whole tech world I feel like. After exploring various industries chasing profit, status and the modern outline of what 'success' looks like, I feel I have finally found my calling. The ability to be creative on a daily basis with the potential to build something that will change peoples lives for the better is the purpose I have been missing. At 27, I am just now learning my first language (Java, didn't want to overthink, but just take action), but I have dived head first into learning everything I can and that is why I am here. To meet like minded people, learn, help in whatever way I can and just be surrounded by the kind of people I want to be surrounded by. Thanks for having me, my names Paul.

Kristian here, trying to solve big problems.

Right now, I want to make everyone a native speaker online to speed up internet adoption!

I want to build a chrome extension on top of the Google Translate API to enable everyone to write and read in their native language but keep a native and professional level of English while engaging online.

The product would like Grammarly be able to identify text input fields then open a translation box similar to https://translate.google.com/, where it will convert the native language into plain and well-written English then input that into the text input field. Likewise, a user should be able to mark a word or sentence online and have the extension translate it to the user's native language in a hover-pop-up.

Initial early-adopters would be non-native English speakers on UpWork, Fiverr or similar to want to be professional, but lack the native language ability. That is currently prohibiting them from winning jobs because it makes the job poster nervous about the communication.

I'm looking for a developer, who is ready to take on the world communication problem and allow everyone to participate in online commerce despite lagging native English abilities.

    Hi Courtland and IH!

I discovered you yesterday while posting in reddit(/r/sideproject). So glad I did.

I created an app, a productivity timer called Project Time Machines - currently available in the Google Play Store. I launched back in February, and am still trying to figure out how to get the word out. As of now, I'm finally creeping up on 1000 downloads, which I consider a true milestone (it's been written on my Goals list for several years!)

Looking forward to gaining insight and knowledge from this group to help me make it to my next milestone of 10K downloads!

    Happy to meet you all,
    -Rob

Really looking forward to speaking to other entrepreneurs. My name is Ben from reformat.co - I've been a web dev since 1999, working for myself since 2010. I mainly produce custom WP themes and am looking to scale my business so it's not completely reliant on my time. I'd really like to get away from the 'feast to famine' freelance model.

    Hi all, I'm Geoff. ๐Ÿ‘‹

I find myself here after a friend recommended the podcast and the whole Indie Hacker scene got me fired up!

At night, I'm the creator of Plunker (https://next.plnkr.co) which is an online community for hacking on web ideas. Check out its product page at https://www.indiehackers.com/product/plunker.

By day, I'm the tech lead on the untrusted code execution platform at Auth0 (we have a free instance of this that you might have heard of called https://webtask.io). If you know Auth0, you might know of Auth0 Rules. Webtask is the tech that actually runs rules / hooks / db scripts, etc.

I love working on developer-focused tools.

Recently, I've been working towards a vision for an online platform for frontend developers to build mini web applications.

A frictionless experience to get from idea to deployed web application in minutes.

My initial vision for this is a tool that caters to front-end developers who know their way around html / css / javascript but who:

    • Require a backend component for their project
    • Hate fighting with modern front-end build systems
    • Don't want to have to re-invent simple back-end service for each project
    • Don't want to have to make decisions about how and where to host these projects

For you Indie Hackers, imagine this: you have an idea and you want to test the waters. What do you need? A landing page of course! And that landing page probably needs a way to collect interest and send it somewhere. Let's say you don't just want interest but you want commitments, what do you need? A Stripe integration!

I would imagine you visiting my tool and starting from a pre-build landing page skeleton. This might be a React project with some placeholder content and styles. You can customize that to your liking. But what about the integrations?

Flip the view to the backend view and search the marketplace for your mailing list integration. You configure that without any need to touch code and install that. Now you will be told how you can get an instance of that integration's client right from inside the frontend editor. Because this is a closed system, you have full intellisense on this client, helping you set up the mailing list and Stripe integrations without needing to consult 5 different sources.

Each change you make, the system updates itself in real-time, letting you test out your work as you go. When you're ready, you hit Deploy and seconds later, your new idea is online, ready to collect user interest. Hopefully, you never even had to leave the tool to look up documentation because the integrations are self-documenting and the tool is highly intuitive.

Anyway, looking forward to interacting with the Indie Hacker crowd. Hit me up!

    Geoff

    Hello everyone,

Lee and Trav from Australia. This is our first crack at an online platform. We're building a market place that connects parents to kids birthday party suppliers and entertainers. We are in the process of validating our idea and exploring "no-code" options, as neither of us has a coding background.

We are here to learn and get to know like-minded people.

Looking forward to the journey ahead!
