April 19, 2020 A few final thoughts and some metrics

I stopped working on AdiPosse a little over 3 weeks ago. I wanted to jot down a few more thoughts and some numbers while I have them handy.

7day

My 7 day active users did't grow much after Feb/March. I'm sure COVID-19 had an impact, but if people aren't using the app at least once a week to weigh in, they aren't very engaged.

funnel

From my funnel, the number of people who entered more than 3 weigh ins was less than 15%.

It think the numbers are bad because the core idea behind the app is faulty. The idea is that people want to weigh themselves every day and share that with others. I feel like the implementation of this idea is adequate, and playing with features or tweaking the onboarding or interface isn't going to change the fact that the core idea doesn't quite resonate with people.

March 25, 2020 Burnt Out, Taking a Break

After working on AdiPosse for over a year, I'm getting frustrated with the lack of growth. I'm getting some installs from the app store, but the retention numbers are not good enough to sustain.

I think people just aren't that interested in weighing themselves all the time, and making those numbers public. It's also hard to get people to promote an app that may cause you to obsess over your weight. I try to promote a healthy mindset, but it's hard to make that clear.

January 24, 2020 Publicly launched the Android version of the app

A few months ago I asked the Indie Hackers community for advice on marketing my IOS only social body weight tracker. I was encouraged to go after a smaller niche, office weight loss challenges.

In order to properly accommodate group challenges, it became clear that I would also need to support Android. With some encouragement, I decided to buckle down and learn Android.

I had assumed that because my data model and back end services were already done (for the ios version), that doing the Android version would be pretty easy. However learning the Android stack took a little longer than I had expected. Things that I had taken for granted, because I knew how to do them in IOS, had to be relearned and didn’t always work quite the same way. Now that it’s done, it feels really good to have control of the entire stack and to have picked up a new skill.

AdiPosse is now publicly available in the google play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bn.adiposse

September 23, 2019 Reached 100 installs

I have yet to find a good marketing channel, but with sharing a little bit on my own social media, a few referrals from existing users, and a few random app store installs I've reached 100 installs.

I have a few more "must have" features I'd like to implement before I really start to pursue marketing, but it's nice to hit 100 users.

May 24, 2019 In the app store

With the help of a few friends as beta testers, AdiPosse is now far enough along to share with the world. It's in the IOS app store. I still have a lot of obvious features that I plan to implement, but I feel good about the current level of functionality and want get more users onboard without needing to show them how to use testflight, etc.

About

I've always tracked my body weight. I have friends at the gym with body weight goals. I want to see their progress toward their goals and have them see mine.
