Dekks
Next Generation Presentation App for Creators
Whaaaat just happened?! Betalist released their 10 Startups of 2020 and Dekks is one of them. I'm speechless.
At the beginning of the year Betalist releases their list of startups which they have high hopes for the coming year. In previous years theyβve highlighted success stories such as Pinterest, InVision, Airtable, IFTTT and many more. All before they became the juggernauts they are today.
What a day! INT brought out a Dekks feature on their newly built platform. INT is one of the biggest and best creative platforms out there and therefor a major milestone in our pre launch efforts to get the ball rolling.
Canβt wait to plant more seeds to get more important early adopters on board β¦ the list is going strong π¦Ύ
So excited today and will share analytics numbers of subscriptions and page visits this week βπ»

Today I created finally a facebook page for Dekks. After years of silence from my end on fb, I decided to go back and make finally a product page where we can post and hopefully communicate with our future audience.
In the last few days (over Christmas) I read a lot about audience, pricing, growth hacking, cac and clv (cltv) β¦ and it made me think β¦ if you are serious about running a startup that is mainly data driven and not based on your own believes or personal opinions (of course you need that too, but not so smart to make decisions entirely based on these personal feelings) then you need to go where your audience is.
Let's try and see how good it will be.

I signed up to Ship from Product Hunt a while back to get Dekks on track. However we haven't used the paid plan. Today we launched the Dekks on Product Hunt's Popular Upcoming Products page. Thanks to @jitsalunke for pointing it out and sharing his insights.

Another milestone accomplished πͺ
I read a lot about BetaList on Indie Hackers and other platforms and the responses were quite diverse. So I'm curious of how much traffic it will bring to the site, but for now I'm happy, since it said that it will take up to a month to be featured, if you choose the free route β¦ Dekks was featured after 4 days, so that's a win.
You can check it out here

Congrats, mate! I'd be happy if you share you results after a few days. For example, how many referrals that brought to you. Thanks!

Hi Stan, thanks man!
in 2 days 78 users π¬ you can read my follow-up from yesterday here β Brutal stats after 24h

That's not too bad... given the traffic of BetaList. Tbh, as of today, you'd get one third of those on SaaSHub's Tribune in 2 days. I guess many of those users/visits will come from the email list they've built over the years.

The first week of the dekks.app product page launch has been an absolute blast. 1000 Early adopters in one week was beyond all expectations really.
However the overall traffic has slowed down a bit now, but it is still going strong in terms of subscriptions. In 5 days, the first month of the launch will have passed and we will 2000 Early Adopters subscribed to Dekks. So grateful. Thanks to everyone who has signed up.
We are now fully focused on the app itself β¦ the internal goal is to get 10K subscriptions till launch. Go strong or go home π β¦ let's see how we get on. I will share progress as we move foreward.

This is an amazing result. It has taken us 6 months to get nearly 1000 users. What has worked for you to get that many subscriptions?
-

Hey. We launched the product page on a few web design inspiration sites like siteinspire.com where a large chunk of our audience sits. That helped a lot with subscriptions I believe and another big chunk comes from our own network through intmagic.com β¦ I guess it's always a bit easier if you build an app for the audience that you are already working with and for.
I hope this helps and makes sense to you!

Hey thanks, yeah having an audience already helps greatly. Nice site by the way, really well done.

This is around the time where the first podcast from Indie Hackers has launched and I have been a big fan ever since.
So last night I did my first podcast on Indie Hackers (first podcast I've ever done) β¦ I hope it turns out well and maybe it can give you some insights about how we approach Dekks and who we roll. I think it launches tomorrow, Friday 14th of November here.
Big hugs to csallen for having me on his show and providing real stories from real people.

Wow, I just discovered Dekks for the very first time. Just by looking, scrolling and reading through your website you got me hooked. I immediately signed up. Now I am also hyped for the podcast to come out.
Just had a look at International Magic and Open Foundry too. I absolutely love everything you have designed and are showcasing on IM. Bold Type, expressive colors and animations β love that stuff. I wrote my bachelor thesis about Web Brutalism and how it evolved as a style, since I am quite into that specific webdesign style. Superimpose.global and 023c.com are two of my absolute favorite websites out there. Funny coincidence to find out about you and Dekks right here on Indie Hackers. π
Keep up what you are doing!
Hyped for the podcast!

Nice Sales page! I feel there are some sample presentations missing on your homepage...or am I missing something? Anyway, looking forward to the podcast :)

Thanks Sebastian β¦ the sample presentations will come shortly! Just deep in production to get the beta ready so we have an actual live walk through on the home page.
Thanks for the feedback!

I love the design, can't wait to see a demo.
The way you handle errors on the email form is also a very nice touch.
-

Thanks David!
I can't wait to get the demo up, but we need a bit more things finished before we can share the whole experience. Did you check out the error on the modal that pops up when you click the top 'Get Updates' button β¦ added a little shake on error π

Even cooler!
I have the worst time pitching my process and USP when selling in person! Its like someone deleted the cache in my brain, and remembering on the spot looks like I'm remembering a sales pitch.
I can't wait to give this a shot - it'll be especially useful as I move from freelance web dev to tech entrepreneur.-

I have a notion database of all Benefits, Features and Concepts written out and for each entry I have a long, medium and short form β¦ as well as an objective description of what this specific feature does and then rewritten into an engaging invite. This task really forces you to think deeply about the problem that you are solving and deconstructs your ideas into it's components. (Good way to spot problems early on, when you make it).
Example (Feature: Identities):
Long:
A single source of truth to keep all design resources, brand assets and production content in sync. Customise templates, blocks, colours, webfonts and text styles with ease for a unified and consistent experience across your team.Medium:
A single source of truth to customise your blocks and keep all your design resources in sync.Short:
One place to sync all design resources.Short Invite (Active):
Keep all your design resources in sync. This is my way to filter down and distill the core essence of what you are about to say. You can do the same thing for your USP / Pitch π The concept of First Principals Thinking helps a lot I reckon. The more you think and reverse engineer, the more clear it becomes to you and then you will feel way more secure.
The deeper you go the more it becomes clearer β and stronger. Refine and massage it. And tell everyone about it so you practice it. Also tell people who aren't crazy into tech, non techies β¦ even harder β simplify.
I hope this helps you, just my thoughts, I can also be wrong βπ»

π’ Major announcement!
Today we hit a major milestone that was actually set for the end of the year. I'm super proud of ourselves and the work we've been putting in!
Our goal was to find 1000 people from our target audience within 2 month who would be willing to give us honest feedback and their email in trade for an early beta on-boarding. Today, just one week later after launching the dekks.app product page, we hit the 1K mark for our early adopter subscriptions and received almost 300 surveys, which we asked to take on 'please confirm your email' notification.
This milestone is especially important and useful to us, since all subscriptions are from the audience that Dekks is built for β 100% quality users π
So what did we learn? Simply launch where your audience is and ask for feedback. People are helpful, just ask!
Thanks to everyone who signed up.

This is impressive, congrats!
How did you get all early adopters?-
2
Thanks! We thought it would be the best to launch the product page on our own social channels instagram and twitter first, but also on siteinspire.com, which is a great resource for web design inspiration.
We are making a lot of websites at International Magic and knew from our experience, that it would give us the perfect amount visitors (and target audience) for the start before we go to big platforms like techcrunch.com β¦ we didn't expect that many so quickly to be honest.

I love the design of your site, and funnily enough I found it through Siteinspire! Planning on using you as an example of good design in an upcoming project!
How long did the design and development of the initial site take?
Also congrats!

Hi Callum! Yeah wicked β¦
Hard to say since we focused heavily on the ui framework components before we did anything else and that powers both, the app and the product page. This is a bit overhead in the beginning and probably not wise if you want get started quickly, but it saves so much time along the way. It's kinda work in progress and we are building new components as we need them β¦ so this was a full month of work in itself.
So having our own ui component framework made the development of the product page incredibly fast. I would say 1 week of development and 2 weeks of design β¦
Let me know if this is helpful to you π

Awesome, yeah I'm planning on doing the same sort of thing for future projects! I think that work upfront makes a hell of a lot of sense.
Really quick turnaround! And yeah, whoever did the design, props, because the site looks great!
Very helpful, good luck with everything!

Thank you! Cheers for the signup π
Yeah we put a lot of energy into the design. It's usually not the smartest thing to do when you bootstrap and want to launch quick, but we felt a design driven presentation needs to look sexy β¦ so thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, that's basically what we did. I think it really comes down where you launch and who your target group is β¦ I think our target audience is really helpful by nature. We launched on siteinspire.com, where a lot of designers and developers are, who have the same problems like us.
-
We just launched our product page dekks.app and killed the simple subscribe site β it's a real thing now and feels amazing.
I think developing an idea and building the product silently under the radar is super productive, but can become quite challenging. It doesn't feel real and it's nerve wrecking at times since you have no actual validation if it's needed or not.
We know that getting this user validation only comes from launching the idea as fast as possible, especially for a bootstrapped start-up like us. But what if you are an experience design studio, that works on a design driven presentation toolkit that needs to look tight and feels amazing?
Perfection is your enemy. Not really when it's at the core of your studio. At International Magic we seek for visual power and design driven experiences so we just had to walk the extra mile and took a little longer (roughly 2 weeks π¬). So here it is, the very first iteration of our product page β¦ we hope you like it βοΈ
Tell us what you think in the comments.

We have been working on Dekks since June, but haven't had the time to create an interim signup page to collect email addresses since we've been focusing on the app itself.
On the 19th of September we (International Magic) had a talk at the Design Matters Festival in Copenhagen, where we introduced Dekks for the first time to a wider audience. We needed quickly a sign-up page to collect email addresses. So we launched a one-page with a simple subscribe field that morning to not miss out on the opportunity to collect quality contacts.
Ryan Hoover, founder of Product Hunt writes in his medium article about building an audience first and shared a link to 1.000 true fans, which I read and was inspired by.
About 100 people signed up that day β first 10% done. π₯³
