A pretty average month. We made a few sponsorship slot sales, and the growth hasn't been huge.
Nothing else to say in particular 😅 I just executed my newsletter routine, nothing fancy to report.

Despite the end of the summer season, it has been our worst month in terms of relative growth. I slightly decreased the ad budget on Meta/Reddit but this still doesn't explain the lower numbers. I'm still trying to figure it out and I hope next month will be better!

We had a pretty average month in terms of ad sales. I was expecting it since our Q4 calendar is full. Next month will be better since we just opened our 2025 Q1 calendar and have some good leads looking to buy slots.

As expected, August is calm in terms of growth.

I onboarded 2 Theodo Apps (ex BAM) devs to help me write the newsletter and they did a good job on this test so I decided to open a few more issues in Q3/Q4 while I previously planned to skip them to take breaks. This allowed us to sell more sponsorship slots for the end of the year, leading to a great month in terms of sales.

Another calm month, I was again on holiday for 2 weeks visiting family, and I didn't have any backup so we skipped 2 issues this time.

Calm month, I was on holiday for 2 weeks with my wife and young baby.

We made one large sponsorship sale: not too bad but as expected, not as great as last month.

Benedikt wrote 2 newsletters alone during my absence 👌. But soon he won't be able to do it anymore, as he's going back to a full-time job. I'm I'm in touch with BAM (largest French React Native consulting firm) to take over and help me when I'm unavailable, and we'll do our first issues together in August.

I'm starting to reduce the ad budget, killing targeting tests that are underperforming.

This has been our best month in terms of sponsorship sales ever 🎉. The main reason is that we opened Q3/Q4 2024 slots, and started filling our long-term calendar. We also made 2 large sponsorship bundle sales contributing to most of the revenue. Of course, this is a "temporary spike" but sponsorship revenue is clearly growing overall.

I relaunched some new ad campaigns on Meta, with different targeting. So far it seems that targeting by interest (TS, Node, JS) gives better results than a look-alike audience. But look-alike audience performs decently too when it's broad enough (0-10%). Maybe the audience is getting tired of our ads, but a small look-alike audience of 1% doesn't perform well anymore. The ROI is still not that great, but we have to spend some money to do some tests!

It was a decent month in terms of newsletter growth.

Since we are now in Q2 2024 and the sponsorship calendar is almost full until September, I raised the prices to reflect the new audience size and the high demand for the 1st sponsorship slot that sells well compared to other slots. We did 2 sales on the new prices. Despite the price increase, sponsors are asking me when they will be able to sponsor the newsletter for Q4 2024. I let one of them buy a 4800€ package and will probably start selling to others, as long as they are flexible on the dates (I need to keep some time for holidays/breaks but Q4 is a bit too far away).

I'm not super satisfied with the performance of the ads recently, the CPA is growing. It's my fault, I don't give those ads a lot of attention lately and will try to improve soon.

This month I started discussions, planned or renewed a few conf media partnerships with large React-related confs that should distribute my flyer in exchange of newsletter mentions.
This kind of partnership takes time to organize so I plan to delegate this to my virtual assistant and also created a page formalizing the media partnership process.
Conferences I partner with: Appjs, React Summit, Chain React, React Rally, React Conf, React Universe, React Paris, React Connection, React Native Connection, dotJS...

Interesting. I never thought about what goes on behind a newsletter like this. (subscribed!) How did figure out pricing at the start of the project?

    1. 1

I studied what other newsletters charge and then adjusted according to demand and availabilities. I increase prices proportionally to the audience size.

I assume you'll find sponsors if you can generate clicks under 3€/click.

I'm writing this report a few months late so I don't remember all the details.

It was an average month in terms of newsletter growth.

As the calendar is already quite sold-out we didn't do a lot of sponsorship sales. All 1st sponsor slots are sold already so we can only sell lower-value slots unless I open more slots in Q3/Q4, but since it's far away I'd rather raise the prices a bit before that.

This month has been one of the best for the newsletter ever, with new records in terms of growth and sales.

Growth has been driven a bit by the lower competition on ad platforms after Christmas, but also mostly by having the newsletter appear and be recommended by Theo T3 in 3 of his videos.

We made a lot of sponsorship sales, as the continuation of our efforts to recontact past sponsors, and also cold outreach to new sponsors from our DB of potential sponsors that my VA maintains. Note: we are far from 9k MRR, because our sponsorship calendar is almost sold out until September 2024 😅 so we'll make less sales the upcoming months now.
