Influence Grid
Find TikTok Influencers
Yesterday I sold Influence Grid!
I started it in December and bootstrapped to $3500 MRR.
Can’t say the exact amount but I was mid five figures.
Why sell when it was going quite well?
- I have some other ideas/ tools I want to build that I encountered during this project.
- It’s also based on scraping, which could break irreversibly at any point, so the whole thing felt a bit unsustainable- cashing in and moving onto a new project felt the right move.
Lessons learnt doing this project:
- Invest in SEO early, then forget about it for a couple of months and do direct outreach. Then see check how the SEO is doing. Here’s the SEO strategy that got me to 800 organic visitors a day: https://twitter.com/clokehead/status/1257597795432873986?s=21
- Copycats will happen, including fellow IHers. It’s absolutely infuriating but ignore them as best you can. Speak to your customers to stay ahead.
- Unless you’re very lucky, a PH /HN launch isn’t marketing strategy. You need a more scalable channel.
- Pick an industry you’re interested in else you’ll want to sell it after six months!
2 months after launch, just reached $875 MRR, which is $10,500 annually. Not nearly enough to live on, but starting to feel like a more significant amount of revenue.
Have been focusing nearly 100% on growth, mainly through cold outreach and it’s great to see it paying off.
Have also done a lot of existing/ potential customer interviews, so I think it’s time to start implementing their feedback into the product, rather than just focusing on growth.
UPDATE - just hit $12K ARR ($1K MRR) on same day!

Hi Andy,
This is genius,
Everybody is talking about Tiktok but brands don't know what to do with it but know they should.
You will be known as one of the Tiktok experts when it blows up, a bit like Ben from Makerpad in the Nocode space.
Well done! -
2
Congrats, Andy!
I just wonder if you knew about this before you've started the project: https://influencermarketinghub.com/tiktok-influencer-marketing-platforms/-
1
Thanks.
Yes, that article is actually one of the reasons I started Influence Grid. In an article about TikTok platforms the author literally admits ‘ Alright, the platforms don’t advertise their TikTok compatibility very much’. The mismatch between what the author is writing (for SEO ie market demand reasons) and what is on offer is my opportunity.
I’ve tried to reach out to get them to add Influence Grid but no luck yet.

This is awesome! It isn’t just Vine’s natural successor, or a flash-in-the-pan fad for young audiences wanting more than selfies, but one of the first examples of a Chinese-developed, super smart, AI-powered product, that at its core is a content curation app, rather than simply social media.
-
1
Nice! What type of cold outreach? emails?
-
1
LinkedIn
-
1
Interesting.. do you customize or send a generic inmail message? How many messages do you send per week? I'm curious because cold outreach is not working that well for us so looking for tips on making it more productive!
-
1
Generic, but with their name/ business. About 10 a day. They're very highly targeted to people I know would use a tool like mine, and I think that's the key

Congrats man! Anyone who can make money off of a two sided market place, is an absolute genius! This is a huge accomplishment. Best of luck to turning that 10kARR into 10kMRR.
-
1
Ah, so it's not actually a 2 sided marketplace since I don't have the influencers on board, just the brands/ agencies.
Cheers, that's the goal!
-
-
1
Nice one, Andy! I love how the homepage is essentially a demo of the tool without having to signup. No BS funnels - I don't have to give you my name, email address and mother's maiden name before being able to try it out :)
Interested to know what your main method of customer acquisition is. SEO? Direct outreach?
-
1
Thanks, still debating whether a more traditional landing page would be better (lots of people have suggested it), but the bounce rate is really low (e.g. today was 35% from 200 visitors), so I'll stick with what I've got for now.
The main method is direct outreach, via LinkedIn, which has been quite successful. Also outreach to industry journalists, which got me this press: https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/new-app-lists-tiktok-influencers-by-engagement-topic-and-audience/568736/
SEO brings in a trickle, but will hopefully improve.
-
1
Yeah I can see the advantages of both. Perhaps a traditional landing page with a call to action to 'Try it now' which takes you to a demo as it is now. Maybe it's worth trying out and just monitoring bounce rate etc. Can always revert it if needs be.
Cool, I've never fully utilized LinkedIn to be honest. Should definitely put some more effort into it. Do you connect to potential customers and then send them a message?
-
2
Yeah just feels like an optimisation that's not a priority right now.
Yeah just connect and message, super simple!
-

Wow, great results in a short time! Congrats!
How did you gathered the info about the influencers?

Thanks! Can’t tell you that I’m afraid 😊

After 4 weeks of steady feature improvement, outreach and my first few customers, I decided it’s time to launch Influence Grid on Product Hunt today.
Thanks to all the feedback and support of the Indie Hackers community in helping me get it to this point!
You can check it out live on Product Hunt here: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/influence-grid
Tech changes since the MVP:
- annual plans
- see influencer emails (when available)
- showing a count of results before search
- similar influencer stats on the profile
- email newsletter sign up
- increase page speed from around 50 to around 80 (seems to vary a lot)
- added a pricing page
Marketing since the MVP:
- cold emailing industry journalists (1 article and hopefully a couple more coming)
- SEO link building in startup directories etc
- setting up social profiles (although not posting much yet)- researched press releases, Product Hunt marketing, cold email marketing
Next steps:
- continue cold emails and link building
- write and send a press release (no idea if this have any effect)- create detailed YouTube videos on how to use the product
- track historical trends for influencers

Got 2 customers at $25/ month last night, so up to $50/ MRR! Very happy with that for week 1.
On Monday I got a write up in Social Media Today, https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/new-app-lists-tiktok-influencers-by-engagement-topic-and-audience/568736/, and a few hundred page views from it. I was concerned none of these converted, so I changed my pricing a bit.
Previously I was giving the first 20 results of any results away for free, and offering an unlimited 'Pro' account for $50 / month. I'm now giving only the first 4 results of any search away for free, and offering tiered accounts ($25/$50/$100), based on number of searches/ csv exports. You can see the tiers here: https://www.influencegrid.com/sign-up
My thinking, after speaking with a colleague, was that a lot of people running small campaigns can probably get everything they need from the first 20 results, so I needed to add an incentive to sign up to a paid account. I don't know if the customers were a result of this or coincidence, but I'll stick with it for now.
The customers also gave me valuable feedback, which I've acted on:
- Stripe emails weren't being sent! Easily fixed: https://stripe.com/docs/receipts#automatically-send-receipts-when-using-billing.
- You could only export 20 accounts at 1 time, raised to 100.
- They also requested an account/profile section to do things like change plan/ payment method. So far I've been handling everything through the contact form, but I'll need to add an account section soon.

Good stuff! I have 3 customers ATM.
I hear you about Stripe. I don't even myself get the emails when I get a new customer!
BTW, love your product, I'm 100% bullish on TikTok.-

Cheers :) I managed to turn on emails for me when I get a new customer using this: https://support.glofox.com/hc/en-us/articles/214374145-How-Do-I-Turn-On-Payment-Received-Notifications-From-Stripe-

Damn, that was a quick hack! Thanks Andy

Hey Andy! Whats your email? Would love to chat I have some connections in the social media space I think you will find valuable in terms of connecting to large brands who are looking for influencers on TikTok.

Hey, I see you found my contact form. I'll email you back now :)

So cool to have paid customers from first days. Where this paid customers came from?

It feels amazing to win some skirmishes, but its important to press an advantage after small victories and prepare for bigger battles. You have not a bad product, you have lots of opportunity to maximize the retention of your users on the site by offering analytical tools and capabilities that the customers want. This will keep them dependent on you instead of exporting the data, and they will pay you for any convenience and intuitive tools that you can provide them.
Feedback loops - adding new functionality, measuring your retention, and growth are top priorities now - things get harder from here, not easier, but certainly more exciting.
-
1
Yeah great to get this validation for what is still a pretty rudimentary product, but all about feedback + iteration now.
-
-
1
Awesome, Andy!
Congrats for the progress and thanks for sharing that you've started without an account/profile section. I always thought it was necessary to have one at the beginning, but you've converted customers before that, which tells that we can still add value to our customers without all the necessary stuff!
-
2
Cheers :) The signed in experience is literally a 'Sign Out' button in the navbar not a 'Sign Up' button, but crucially the search/ filter restrictions are lifted which is where the value is. It definitely feels hacky though, and means I have to support those things manually, so I'll change soon.

Just launched the MVP of Influence Grid, a tool to help brands find TikTok influencers: https://www.influencegrid.com/.
Spent about 1 month working out how to save / update the data and building the backend, then 2 weeks building the front end. It’s super minimal at the moment, but you can search by location, topic, account size, engagement rate and average video views.
Things I’ll add next: a proper landing page, free trial/ limited features for free accounts, export to CSV, user search, categorisation of music genres.
The initial marketing focus will be on finishing the technical SEO and link building via submitting to directories / Reddit. I’ve also reached out to 1 industry journalist and he said he'll write about the site at some point this week!

Very Cool! How you got the data?
-
1
Thanks. I'm recording public profile data, I can't tell you exactly how sorry!
-
-
1
Looks interesting.
One thing you could do is add an exit popup with a lead magnet (ebook, email course etc) with tips on how to use TikTok
Not everyone will be ready to sign up and look, but if you drip them information slowly should help.
-
1
Cheers, yeah once I work through some of the initial feedback/ features from this launch I will start on the content marketing proper. This feature would fit nicely into that
-
-

Update: the industry journalist wrote the article a bit quicker than I expected! Still no signups yet but a great backlink if nothing else https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/new-app-lists-tiktok-influencers-by-engagement-topic-and-audience/568736/

Interesting I shared it with a Social Media manager friend.
For future iterations, I would suggest hiding the side menu and add a CTA to show it and also detect the user country and show him 5 top local influencers.
Best of luck!
-
2
Thanks for sharing and the feedback 😊 On tablet / mobile the filters menu is indeed hidden. For the second point - I am thinking of changing the landing page to more of a search page with just the topic / location filters (no table), and some copy describing the product, but I also like your idea so will try that too.

Cool - good idea 👍

Thanks! I actually used Trennd/ Exploding Topics to come up with the idea when I saw the ' nanoinfluencers' trend (described my thought process here: https://www.indiehackers.com/product/influence-grid/came-up-with-the-idea--LvUPLAduj4AkmL3Uu8Y)
Totally agree about the historical data, I really wanted to do this from the start. At the moment I have a limitation in my process for collecting the data that makes it tricky to get it at frequent intervals, so I'm going to have to leave it until I figure that out.

I was searching for side-project inspiration on https://trennd.co/ (now https://explodingtopics.com/) and noticed the trend for 'nano influencer' (influencers with >1k and <10k followers) as a trend. My original idea was to build some sort of discover platform to help brands find these influencers.
Looking at existing platforms and noticed they all seem to be Instagram focused, none covered TikTok despite its growth over the last couple of years. Also noticed that their subscription prices tended to start around $50 and that a lot didn't disclose pricing, so they are clearly a fair bit more than $50. This seems like a healthy existing market with a TikTok-shaped opportunity, but I might be missing something...
Committed to building an MVP, first figuring out how to get the data as that seemed the hardest part, then building a minimal UI on top of it with a mix of free/ premium features.
About
TikTok has blown up over the last couple of years, but most influencer discovery platforms still focus on Instagram/ Twitter/ FB. Influence Grid fills the gap for a comprehensive discovery tool for TikTok.

Congrats, Andy! It doesn't feel that long ago that I commented on your 10k ARR milestone :)
I think selling was probably a smart idea, one small change from TikTok (or wherever you're scraping from) and your whole business is in trouble. I've experienced similar frustrations with my own product (YT to IG) where Instagram have implemented various changes and restrictions.
Looking forward to seeing what you build next!
Thanks Jamie!
Exactly, next I want to find something that’s built on open standards / platforms that are unlikely to change too much.
Newb question I know but what does "Invest in SEO early" mean exactly, buying add words? Adding the write meta data to the site? Please elaborate 🙏
Andy, I was going to build just this app. I did not understand how to monetize it and I thought it's best to use their api. But I could not find anything for it, so I put the idea on a backburner.
Never thought scraping would be a viable solution, but you've clearly proven me wrong. Congrats!!!
Thanks, yeah the scraping wasn't easy but it was doable.
Hey Andy, congrats on your sale! Sounds like you made the right move.
Why did you choose the creator's niche? Any interest on particular or you just saw the opportunity?
I am super interested on Saas for creators as I think there's huge potential. Is your Next move on that direction?
Thanks. Purely opportunistic, hence wanting to move onto something else. There are definitely loads of opportunities in this niche though as platforms change so much.
Totally agree! Good luck on to the Next one!
Congrats Andy,
I remember reading your post in SaaS marketers a few weeks back.
I think your product was the first TikTok focused product.
Can't wait to see what you build next :)
Cheers!
Amazing learnings and success, Andy. Do you have any particular tips about selling your website? How did you approach finding a buyer? Which platform did you use etc.
I just posted on my social media and microacquire. It was too young for brokers like FE international.
I potentially left some money on the table by not putting it on Flippa, not sure, but they take 10%.
Ah, interesting. Thanks. I just try to understand the market a bit better, just launched a newsletter around this: deals flow.com
If you have any thoughts or feedback, let me know! Enjoy your weekend
Congrats! How did you come up with the idea?
https://www.indiehackers.com/product/influence-grid/came-up-with-the-idea--LvUPLAduj4AkmL3Uu8Y
Thanks! I didn't try your top-up approach for ideation. Let us know your next big thing. :-)
congratulations!
how was the project transfer process? Do you use a dedicated email account and signed up with it for all-around services?
Have you used escrow service for transfer?
Thanks.
Thanks. Yeah LastPass sign in for every platform account.
Some back and forth with MFA codes but it was easy enough.
They sent me the money then I transferred (we had a contract). I think this is unusual - most people use escrow services
So much valuable stuff. I really hope you'll take some time to reflect on everything and share everything you remember. Congratulations.
Now do it again ;)
Thanks, definitely want to write everything down, for my future benefit and maybe other people’s
congratulations! seems like the right decision
Thanks Victor
Fantastic Andy! Congratulations, very happy for you mate 🥳
Cheers Josh!
Massive congratulations Andy. Big fan of what you did with Influence Grid. It definitely fell into the category of a product I discovered when looking into doing something similar at the time. Really happy to see the validation in it and sale!
Cheers, appreciate it!
Amazing!!! Congrats Andy.
Any details how you sold it? Was it inbound?
Thanks!
I put it up for sale about a month ago, so I was actively looking.
I basically put a post on IH, LinkedIn, Twitter, MicroAcquire and linked to a Google Doc with all the details. Had quite a lot of interest and went with the first offer that was close to my asking price.
About point #4, does that mean you weren't interested? Congrats by the way!
Thanks, yeah not really interested in influencer marketing
Congrats Andy! Thanks for sharing your SEO strategy as well.
I started earlier this year Growth Gems and only at $620 MRR so far...So this is inspiring.
Very timely product too, nicely done. Looking forward to what you're building next!
Congrats if you've managed to achieve what you wanted, but if you managed to grow from 0 to 3500MRR in ~6 months, selling for the future income of the next year seems like a net loss, unless your operation costs where prohibitively high.
On a related topic, how did you manage to get a buyer? Did you advertise you wanted to sell? Were you somehow audited? (checking you are not violating licenses, TOS, etc.?)
12 * 3500 < what I sold for.
Posted on social media, IH and mentioned to a couple of people, so yes I advertised it.
There was a 2 week due diligence period where the buyer had access to most stuff to audit it.
Nice job, and great learnings. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Rick!
Thanks for sharing this! How does SEO look like in your case, was it writing articles around a specific keyword like in the Tweet described, you have some examples of some you did?
I created 100s of programmatically generated pages like this one: https://www.influencegrid.com/tiktok-influencers/yoga so no actual writing
Big congratulations Andy. I still have influence grid saved in my bookmark saved from an influencer campaign I ran, back when I discovered the tool. :D
Do you mind sharing what marketing budget per month you had including for SEO?
Also, How many keywords did you initially target?
Congrats again.
Cheers!
0 budget, just time as I was doing it myself.
I created 100s of programmatically generated pages like this one: https://www.influencegrid.com/tiktok-influencers/yoga so no actual writing
Would you mind sharing a link (or name) to the github repo you referenced in the Data Sourcing section #2 in the Google doc?
Congrats Andy! And thank you for all this information. The Google doc is an excellent guide.
Thanks! I'll have to let you figure that out yourself - wouldn't want to create any competition for the buyer
Got it. Looking forward to hearing about your next win!
Congrats, Andy! It seems like a really nice idea executed very well. All the best for your next project!
In one of the comments, you had mentioned about putting up some details in Google Docs about your product. If it isn't proprietary would you be able to share it here?
Here you go: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BwBZUhgTLJTIXPV6GhC4ihBodlmjdJ0lH_vW9xoKxKA/edit?usp=sharing
Congrats dude! 🥳
I'm sure you handled this properly, and I only ask because I look for buying opps but the buyer knows the risk that encompasses scraping and what that could negatively do to the current MRR if the platform changed?
Also, how did you find your buyer?
Yeah, they actually have a similar business based on scraping so they know it's risky. I didn't try and hide this at all
I'm not 100% but I think it was from posting on Twitter
Congratulations :)
Neat react ux, love it.
Can you share some info about the tech stack you used?
It also looks like the webscraping was a massive work, what did you used and how hard was to develop it?
More details on tech stack and scraping here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BwBZUhgTLJTIXPV6GhC4ihBodlmjdJ0lH_vW9xoKxKA/edit?usp=sharing
Congrats on your sale Andy!
Did you sign a non-compete? ;)
What do you think Ahrefs and Moz. have in common? :)
They scrape GOOGLE!!
Their MRR? 1M+ MRR. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Yes the scraping breaks sometimes but it's also where money is made. Doing things other people aren't doing.
Then again I can imagine it's a great feeling to have sold your first business! It can only get better! :)
Non-compete yes.
Yeah I have nothing against scraping but I'd rather build on something less flaky and in an industry I'm more into
Great to hear and also good advice - particularly the reality of big PH/HN launch vs long term SEO/direct outreach.
Thanks. It's definitely easy to fall into the trap of thinking a launch is everything, particularly when some of our most loved products (e.g. nomadlist) seem to have a huge launch and never look back.
Congratulations Andy! This is great to read. Wishing you more success for the future
Thanks!
Nice job! Congratulations on the sale!
May i ask what other practices did you apply to get visitors to your page?
I'm feeling that with my current product, scraper.ai i have good conversions but driving traffic to it seems rather hard?
What's the ai bit in scraper?
the classification of websites
Pretty much just LinkedIn outreach + SEO!
Thanks.
Cold outreach to industry journalists
Cold LinkedIn outreach to influencer agencies
Seo - this was most sign ups in the end
Congrats Andy, hope to see more awesome products from you!
Thanks man
Nice!! Can you tell from which source you got the sale?
Not actually sure! I think Twitter
Congrats Andy - great news. That's rapid progress from our IndieBeers interview back in February!
Thanks Charlie, and thanks for featuring it so early on!
Congrats Andy! The next one seven figures. Any idea of the next venture?
Thanks, and hopefully! I have some ideas for lead gen and seo tools but I’m having difficulty validating them so not sure yet
Go for them, and good luck!
Congratulations, Andy! That's some great advice!
We are working on a SaaS product called Browsee (https://browee.io) which helps products to improve User Experience using Session Recordings, Heatmaps, and Funnels. It is good to see other bootstrapped SaaS businesses doing well.
It would be great if you can give us some feedback on Browsee too!
Thanks. My feedback would be: remember to spell your company correctly when linking to it ;)
