July 12, 2023 It's fast to build a product, it takes time to position it properly + experiment at hypersonic speed

I feel like it took my five years to be able to explain the USP and the killer feature of Meetme in a few words.

Those are the following:

Meetme is yet another scheduling tool, but it has the following USP: it's mobile first, so it uses phone number for auth to ensure better engagement on bookings. And it uses the phone calendar to suggest meeting matching both user's calendar ✨

Have you experienced something similar? I find this crazy. Maybe it's my weakness to be able to articulate and communicate clearly what I have been working on for so long.

How did you get clarity on your USP?

I am reading this book, One Million Followers, by Brendan Kane. It has a whole chapter on the importance of testing, or experimenting. The idea is to experiment as fast as possible, analyze, learn. This resonates with the famous build, measure, learn loop, but at very high speed. Apparently, this was the single one reason Mark Zuck said Facebook succeeded: the ability to run 10K version of FB in parallel to experiment and iterate at hypersonic speed.

I find this fascinating and very inspiring.

What will you do with this?

July 10, 2023 New landing page out

I have been working on the new landing page for Meetme. The previous versions seemed amazing when I released it 1 year ago. But the more I am refining my USP and highlighting my killer feature, the more I realized my landing page or web page sucked.

So I took a few days to built it again, inspired from the methodology I used with AirCal.

I used ChatGPT to help me structure the content and data that I want to highlight. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to let chatGPT generate everything for me like a dumb little robot. But using it wisely, like a sparring partner, to iterate on the structure and on the copy of the web site feels really amazing.

I'd love to have your feedback on how it looks and what u understand from it.

It has been written for French people first. And I still have SSR to enhance with my Next.js setup.

Go - ROAST IT please! πŸ”₯

Hi! I scrolled through your website and I noticed two main things:

    1. I am viewing the English version of your landing page, but if I click on the "Open in your Web browser" button it takes me to a page where it is a completely different language.
    2. The layout of the testimonials is scuffed. Not aligned with each other and "Camille Pires" response is randomly in the middle. I think it is not pleasant for the eye.
  2. 1

I like the balance between simplicity and detail throughout the page. The page looks really good!

One little detail is to add a call to action (the "get started now" button) at the top of the page or even the top menu. This helps to get more conversions because not everyone who makes it to your site will scroll all the way to the bottom.

Another thing I have found is always helpful for landing pages is some video content. Either a marketing or explainer video is always a great way to get more interactions with leads.

Overall, I like the site a lot! Great job

  3. 1

I really like the above-the-fold hero content, great job with the simplicity.

I'd work on the logos...They would need to be all in one row, perhaps transitioning left or right, same background color, same height, and evenly spaced. currently, the logos look a bit messy.

Scrolling down the page looks good; I would suggest two things :

Firstly, amend your FAQ into clickable dropdowns that slide open (its good to keep the site simple, but sometimes it can suffer from being too simple :)... add a little flair, and let the user click on something before leaving, theirs a reason why Apple stores leave their laptops at an awkward angle, the user is invited to push the screens back so they can interact with the product.... do the same..

Secondly, add some animation, slide-ins towards the bottom where a CTA (call to action) is located, button, form etc. Bring the user's short attention span back to the page.

From the 25 seconds I browsed your site for this feedback, I know you do scheduling, but outside of that, I didn't see anything else compelling; nothing stood out, but I am not your ICP; target your ICP, and your good.

    good work.

June 24, 2023 Left my job to go full time on Meetme and refused a 500k/year job

This is the leap of faith. I have waited for this day since I got the initial idea of Meetme back in 2017.

First I have changed my work to work part-time. I switched to 80% to be able to do 80% on my job, and another 80% on my startup.

Since then, it has been a rollercoaster. So much hard work. Finding balance, with 2 kids and an amazing wife (kids born in 2018 and 2021) is hard. But possible.

I did a lot of SCRUM sprints alone to push myself on doing the dev. Estimating the time I could work, try to work in 2 weeks sprints. Do the retrospective on my own.

1st key to succeed here was to work from 4-5 AM to 8 AM before my day job. This was a massive helper. It was truly amazing to see how much these little chunk of time ad up and become HUGE amount down the line.

I tracked all the development time on wakatimer to add some gamification and goals like code 2h per day minimum. It helped as well!

Just before covid hit, I had a good MVP and could test it with my first paying user. Rewrote a new version during covid.

Released v2 at the end of 2021. In summer 2022 I took a few months off to grow the business and learn to do sales. Doing sales door to door is hard. The first time it was so hard to enter shops without meeting and pitch my product. Getting so much rejection is really hard. But during the first dozen cold outreach in person, I could not even enter the shops. Many time I motivated myself like: "This time I enter, let's go". Walk toward the shop like a hairdresser, and at the last second sawing so many people in it and scared of rejection and just passing in front of the shop without entering. Oh that happened to me so many times.

Now, almost 2 years since my first cold outreach meeting, I can enter any crowded area and pitch my product at any given time.

I entered some pitch contest (and love it!) as I started to realize that I might need to raise some money to grow faster.

Now, since early June, I am full time working on Meetme. I am so proud after so much struggle.

When I gave my notice to leave my job, another big company approached me for a CEO role for Switzerland. I was really teased and happy that such a big and great company offered me this opportunity. I thought "hey why not?". I did all the process, travelled to meet the worldwide CEO and had great contact and chat with them. But after giving it really some deep thoughts, I refused the job. I did all the hard work and hard choices since 5 years to be able to focus on my own business. So I turned down that 500k / year job to focus on Meetme.

What's Meetme? Meetme is yet another scheduling tool, but it has the following USP: it's mobile first, so it uses phone number for auth to ensure better engagement on bookings. And it uses the phone calendar to suggest meeting matching both user's calendar ✨

What's next? The goal is to sell my first subscription online to be able to shift away from door to door sales to online sales.

Appreciate for sharing this with the community. It gave me some faith in my endeavors.

    1. 2

I am very glad this gave you some faith. Keep it up, staying positive is really helping a lot. Building a vision of your dream life helps!

Congrats on juggling all these VIPs (very important priorities).

And yes, big time leap of faith.

    Rooting for your success!!

Thanks a lot @sat, this means a lot to me.

  3. 2

Taking the plunge is always a big risk. Kudos for that. Regarding the naming though, I was wondering how you settled on Meetme? Because the first thing that comes to mind is that I thought its a dating app?

    1. 1

      Thanks for the kudos @redgetan.

The name came from the vision of helping all the people to meet with each other with ease. And as a not native English speaker, I chose this simple name « meetme ».

In Switzerland we have a brand named QOQA. The owner Pascal Meier was challenged by his professor to create a brand that has the same name of a very famous other brand. QOQA succeeded and is now a real empire, despite having the same name as the famous Coca Cola bottle πŸ˜‰

    Congrats.
I think having a great family is so important, especially the support from your amazing wife, that's the key which make you get this so far

Family is key! Without my wife's support, I would never be where I am today.

March 7, 2023 2 new customers - 10k ARR here we go!

2 new customers with respectively 3 and 4 seats have helped groiw the MRR to close to 10k ARR.

Meanwhile I am focusing on the launch of AirCal and not doing much. It's running mostly on auto pilot.

The next steps will be

  • to fix 3 bugs and implement an enhancement to make data loading 100x faster. I am thinking about hiring someone to do the dev (React Native, Mobx, FeatherJS and CouchDB).

  • refine the placement to focus on what we are : a standalone calendar for mobile users. No need to use Google Calendar or iCloud or anything. It's a standalone alternative to Calendly.

Looking forward passing the 10k ARR soon πŸ‘€ πŸ€‘

Thanks for reading πŸ’›

Great progress! If I may, how do you juggle two projects at the same time? Anyway, good luck.

    1. 1

I am using my own tools. I use time blockers in AirCal. It's greatly inspired from Notion, so we have this amazing text area that are very big and let us write with style. I can capture everything I have in my mind, prepare some drafts, link my tweets or ideas or whatever.

It has the ability to mark the event as completed. It's really cool to check it when it's complete or to reschedule it when I need to plan it again.

What is the AI I can start today by just asking to plan for me my day, according to my constraints. Just works amazing!

Colors for different roles I have different businesses or goals.

I then use the templates mechanism to setup my ideal week and copy this every sunday.

Mix all this together and .. BOOM, you got 200% productivity boost πŸ’₯

      1. 1

        Wow. Quite interesting!

March 4, 2023 Crossed 1500 users

Last week we have crossed 1500 users on the platform.

This is a good progress, knowing it's running in auto pilot since a few weeks.

I have started to work on www.aircal.co last month to add some kind of a small brother to Meetme.

Follow along to get updates on AirCal. It has been growing 100x faster than Meetme. In one month I have more traffic on AirCal.co than Meetme πŸ‘€

    Hey Romain,

here is my quick feedback. (Can be rude on some details, particularly on the UI).

    Good:

    • Available in french πŸ₯–
    • We directly understand what you do and that you are a mobile app

    Bad:

    • On the hero we see that it's an incrusted Video (poor video quality)
    • Your logo is too big compared to your Book a demo button
    • Logo don't fit with the overall design of the landing
    • The menu of the navbar their is too much space in the navigation item (In french the item goes on 2 lines)
    • On the second how it's work their too much spaces
    • In english the pricing section is called "Awards" (Un awards c'est une rΓ©compense ex: un Oscar)
    • The number in already section don't feel real put something like 1403 users
    • Cookies banner is at the bottom of the landing

I Hope this will help you =)

      Hello Matteo

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I do really appreciate it and it does help a lot!

The translated text is an auto translate mistake πŸ”₯Thanks for reporting it.

Took notes of all your feedback and will take action on next update. πŸ™Œ

    Congratulations Romain!

    It looks really good!

Some feedback based on my initial visit.

The section: How does it work?
I really like the idea, but the videos of your app seem very laggy because they start at a different place than the end.

Out of curiosity, why do you call "Pricing" for "Awards"? :-)

    1. 1

      Hi Phillip

      Thanks for the feedback 😊

Yeah I really wanted to find a way to show how the product works and make it as real as possible. Am thinking about building something with video and scroll effect for the next version. Scrolling progressively would show the feature at the same time.

Meanhwhile, maybe I should just stop the video at the end, or add a video progress indicator. What do you think?

      1. 1

Yes, I would love to see that. Check out monday.com front page for inspiration, it's working so well with transitions if you scroll down a bit.

        1. 1

Oh yeah what monday did is very clean ✨ Thanks for the link!

June 25, 2022 400 active users, doubled paid customer in a month & key learnings

We are growing slowly but very steadily.

Last week I started doing cold calling ☎️ after visiting more than 500 prospects door to door. I always thought in person sales would be much more efficient. But after 3 months doings sales full time, it seems that cold calling is working well too!

First day, after 24 phone calls, I booked 6 meeting for in person demo πŸ’₯. This made me change my opinion on cold calling. I am now shifting to more cold calling and then cold visiting.

We have 20 paid customers in the pipe. Some are in trial, other are waiting for their config and some are waiting for the web version πŸ’°.
In the last weeks, we had our first customer literally writing resignation letter to our competitors to start a new contract with us. Hard to show more love to our product 🧑.

All these conversations allow to grow and fine tune the product like crazy. We have a lot to do, and today I took some times to cleanup our backlog and prepare the next sprints. It's very hard to prioritize. Talking to customer helps a lot. I can create EPICS for the upcoming features and rough estim the Business Value and the Cost or Story Point of each. Then, sort based on my feeling based on the customer conversation I had and the ROI of these tasks.

Let's get back to work! Have a lovely week-end all and let me know if you have any similar experience or what you think about my journey.

    Hi Romain,
Sounds really good well done! How are you capturing client feedback? Maybe that can help you prioritize? For Boei we are using https://productlift.dev for this. Maybe it can be useful for you too!
    Ruben

Hey @Ruben88, am capturing all the customer feedback in Notion directly. Thanks for the proposition :)
