June 21, 2025 🚀 How I Blended Sokoban with Match-3 Mechanics into a 3D Puzzle Game: SokoMatch 3D

What happens when you mix the brain-burning logic of Sokoban with the addictiveness of Match-3? You get SokoMatch 3D — a game that surprised even me during development.

As a solo developer and puzzle game addict, I wanted to build something that feels fresh yet deeply familiar. After many prototypes, I found a strangely satisfying fusion: what if you had to push blocks around like in Sokoban… but match them like in Candy Crush?

That’s the core idea behind SokoMatch 3D — a 3D puzzle game where you don’t swap tiles, you shove them into place.

🧠 How It Works

In SokoMatch 3D, every level is a tiny spatial logic challenge:

  • You push adorable animal blocks around a 3D board.

  • Match 3 or more identical animals and poof! they vanish.

  • Every move counts — push the wrong block, and you may get stuck.

Think match-3, but every match requires tactical movement. It's like playing chess with a Rubik's Cube made of pandas.

❄️ But There’s More…

To keep things interesting, I added mechanics like:

  • Ice blocks that freeze pieces in place

  • One-way arrows that restrict movement direction

  • Carefully designed layouts that demand foresight and clever positioning

Each new mechanic forces you to rethink how you approach the puzzle. It’s not about speed — it’s about precision and planning.

🎮 Why I Built This

I’ve always loved games that don’t rush you, but make you feel smart. I wanted to build something:

  • Challenging without being frustrating

  • Cute but not childish

  • Strategic, logical, and deeply satisfying

Most importantly, I wanted something I’d want to play. I ended up playing my own test levels for hours… just to find that perfect move.

👀 Try It Out

If you’re into puzzle games, indie experiments, or just love games that make you feel clever, you’ll probably enjoy this.

June 20, 2025 Bringing Back the Arcade: Why I Built Play Free Arcade

🚀 Launching Play Free Arcade — A Free, No-Friction Arcade Game Hub

Hi Indie Hackers! 👋

I'm excited to share the first version of my latest side project: Play Free Arcade — a free-to-play arcade game site where anyone can jump in and enjoy classic and modern arcade-style games with zero downloads, logins, or paywalls.

🎯 Why I Built This

I’ve always loved the simplicity and fun of classic arcade games — fast to start, easy to learn, and just pure fun. But most gaming sites today are cluttered with ads, slow load times, and require unnecessary sign-ups.

So I decided to build something better:
✅ Fast-loading
✅ Mobile-friendly
✅ No registration required
✅ Just games — free and fun

🛠 How I Built It

I'm using modern web tools (Next.js + TypeScript + Firebase/DB in the background) to keep things fast and scalable. The current version includes a curated collection of open-source and licensed arcade games, with new ones added regularly.

💡 Who It’s For

  • Casual gamers who want to kill time without friction

  • Parents looking for safe games for their kids

  • Retro fans who miss the good old Flash-style arcade days

  • Anyone who just wants to play, not pay

🚧 What's Next

  • 🎮 Add user accounts (optional) to save high scores

  • 📱 Improve mobile layout and responsiveness

  • 🌍 SEO and localization for non-English users

  • 🕹 Add more original and indie games from other developers

🙌 How You Can Help

If you like the idea, please check it out, give it a try, and let me know what works and what doesn’t. I’d love your feedback.

Thanks for reading — and happy gaming!

Love this. How difficult was it to source all the games? Are there repositories to choose from? Did you have to set up licensing deals or are they open source?

Hey Shuohao — this is super fun and nostalgic 👾
Love the "no friction, just fun" vibe. I checked out playfreearcade.com and it really nails the instant arcade experience — no login, no popups, just click & play. Exactly how it should be.

I'm building ZugFlow, a SaaS for small service businesses like salons/barbers, and even they ask for “quick games” in their waiting rooms for clients or kids
so I totally see a use case here beyond casual gaming too.

    A few thoughts:

    • Consider adding “Continue where you left off” logic for returning players (even without login)

    • A low-key leaderboard per game might boost engagement without requiring accounts

    • I’d highlight your mobile-optimized aspect more — the mobile gaming market is huge

Also: design is clean, very retro-modern. Respect for going with TypeScript + Next.js + Firebase — smooth stack.

Let me know if you're ever open to collabs or embedding versions of your arcade in third-party SaaS/dashboards. Might be fun for side integrations.

Keep it up & congrats on the launch!
