November 16, 2019 Maker Podcasts on Product Hunt

When I originally had the idea for Maker Podcasts I thought it would be a good way to promote Pod Hunt.

A bit of side project (of a side project) marketing.

I think the collections feature is now a good place, so I decided to post the Makers collection to Product Hunt. Figured this was an appropriate place to post the collection, given their audience.

https://www.producthunt.com/posts/maker-podcasts

I've also added another collection for design related podcasts:
https://collections.podhunt.app/design

Really excited to open this up to Pod Hunt users to see what collections they build.

November 8, 2019 Launched Curated Collections

Earlier this week I announced a new feature: Curated Collections.

Curated collections are another attempt at solving the problem of podcast discovery, still focused on podcast episodes and not podcasts as a whole, and a natural extension of what Pod Hunt is trying to achieve.

I wrote more about how I had the idea for a new website MakerPodcasts.com, and why I decided to build it as feature into Pod Hunt instead: https://practicalmvp.com/blog/announcing-maker-podcasts

I was trying to find new ways to promote Pod Hunt and Maker Podcasts seemed like a good way to do that, even as a separate site, but even more so as a feature of Pod Hunt itself.

I'm hoping this will increase the number of backlinks and help with the overall search engine rankings for Pod Hunt.

The first collection is called "Makers" and focuses on Makers who share regular updates on their journey building, launching and scaling their businesses.

October 2, 2019 Mini Podcast Tour

I felt it was the right time to focus on promoting Pod Hunt instead of continuing to add more features at top speed.

After some thought I decided the best way to promote Pod Hunt would be on podcasts, shocking I know!

Anyone listening to podcasts is a potential user, anyone hosting podcasts is a potential user (and supporter). Even if I didn't make an appearance on a podcast, just reaching out and talking to more podcast hosts would have been advantageous.

I started by putting out a simple tweet (https://twitter.com/mubashariqbal/status/1174461817072103426) saying I was looking to be a guest on podcasts. I'm fortunate enough to have a number of podcast hosts in my Twitter followers, and a few reached out to arrange an appearance.

I took advantage of the recently created Podcasts group on Indie Hackers and followed up with a post there (https://www.indiehackers.com/post/let-me-be-your-guest-8fe09d1fe7), making the same offer. Finally I jumped at the chance to appear on the Indie Hackers podcast once again, have been on originally 2 years ago. Courtland made a post asking if anyone was free for an interview one weekend, and I offered to be a guest to talk about my progress with Pod Hunt.

I've scheduled 9 podcast appearances now, I've recorded 4 already and 2 have been published.

https://www.indiehackers.com/podcast/121-quick-chat-with-mubashar-iqbal
https://smashnotes.com/p/smash-notes/e/special-interview-with-mubashar-iqbal-product-hunt-make-of-the-year-for-2016-and-founder-of-pod-hunt-will-robots-take-my-job-plus-80-other-projects

Early indications are that this will be a very affective way to promote Pod Hunt in the short term.

As well as the direct traffic of the podcast appearance I am hoping that the links from the podcast show notes will help with the SEO ranking for Pod Hunt. Long term I feel that will be best source of traffic for Pod Hunt, but as with all good things, that takes time!

Love the strategy mate, a great way to add value to the community and acquire new users.

    1. 1

Thanks, and having fun doing it too! πŸ˜€

  2. 2

I'd love to go on podcasts too! How do you approach them, or did all come through from those tweets?

Are they podcasts you listen to? Or entirely different ones?

    1. 1

I do listen to a lot of podcasts, but the majority I had no direction connection with the hosts before sending my tweet and posting here on Indie hackers.

I've purposely held off reaching out to the really big podcasts that I listen too regularly and may have a connection with (other than Indie hackers which just aligned itself magically) until things are a little bit more stable at Pod Hunt.

I think being clear what you'd like to talk about is helpful, and providing a way for people to find out more about you is important.

I think it was a little easier for me, I didn't really have to think about the audience of the podcast before reaching out, as I mentioned any podcast is a good one for me :)

Early next year I think I will be more proactive in actually reaching out to podcasts and offer myself as a guest, but this outreach has been productive enough for now!

Haven't been a user for long but: https://podcastguests.com looks like a good way to get more targeted appearances.

September 8, 2019 Getting to 500 users

This week the 500th user joined Pod Hunt to submit, vote and comment on podcasts.

Although I’ve had projects that received a lot more visitors this early (5 weeks since soft launch), Pod Hunt is the quickest to get to 500 users.

Pod Hunt uses Twitter for login, this is both good and bad.

Good because login/signup is very quick and easy for users, just a couple of clicks and they are done. No complicated forms to fill out or email address to verify before they are able to fully interact with the website.

It can also be bad because people worry about giving access to their account to other people. To help mitigate that worry, I made sure to only request the minimum read only access Twitter offers. Pod Hunt can't access any private information, and can't post anything on users behalf. Since I never intended to do those things it seemed like the obvious thing todo.

It is tempting to ask for more permissions than you need now because you may need them later, but I prefer to optimize for right now, unless I'm 100% sure I will need that in the future. In that case you also need to be clear with users why you are requesting permissions you don't appear to need based for the features you have.

Also, in the past I've tried to follow the practice of hiding features that visitors can't access, but not here.

For example, you need to be a logged in, authorized user to submit an episode. In the past I would have hidden the "Submit episode" button, because why show a visitor something they can't do.

However, how does a user know they can submit an episode if there isn't a button? πŸ”Ž Yes you could replace the button with a signup call to action, but the call to action to submit an episode is so much stronger, that I think that encouraged more people to signup.

It's also very tempting to do things for your users early on. When people reached out about submitting their episodes, in the past I would have been tempted (I still was) to submit the episode for them.

I wanted to get content on the site, I wanted the first user interaction with Pod Hunt to be positive, but since login/signup was so easy here I encouraged people to submit the episodes themselves.

I see submitting episodes a core feature of Pod Hunt, and wanted as many people as possible to go thru the process to give me feedback. What was easy, what was hard, and what needed to be make clearer (thanks for the feedback everyone!)

Very happy to get to 500 users, and looking forward to getting the next 500.

    Awesome. Great milestone to hit.

    What’s next steps for growth?

    1. 1

I'd like to focus on engagement for the immediate future, having users is great, but having them actually using the site, submitting, voting, commenting etc is going to be best signal for Pod Hunt.

Not exactly sure how I measure/track that, but will figure it out πŸ˜€

  2. 2

    Congrats!!!
How many of the 500 come back daily?

    1. 2

Haven't broken that down yet, but I'm guessing most comeback on a weekly basis.

But doing about 200 visitors a day on average at the moment.

  3. 1

    Hi Mubashar!
πŸŽ‰Congrats with first 500 users. Really nice achievement.

I'm following for your progress with podhunt from totally beginnings. I want to share with you some friendly opinion, maybe it could be helpful for you:
Don't use Subscribe button. Name it something else:

August 30, 2019 Crossed $20 MRR

Although I hadn't planned to monetize Pod Hunt right away, I wanted to test if people would be willing to support the service before I invested a large amount of time into building it.

Before officially launching Pod Hunt I offered podcast hosts the ability to become a supporter for a small annual fee.

Being a supporter, enhanced the podcast profile, and displayed a supporter badge where ever the podcast was displayed. Not a large feature list, but enough to match the price.

Since this was a test, I decided to take a no-code approach. I created a subscription on Gumroad and linked to it from a page on the website. Whenever a new supporter signups up, I get an email.

I then update the podcast record in the website database to flag them as a supporter. All every manual, but it meant I was able to launch the feature in 1 night, and given the volume it's perfectly manageable.

All supporters signup for an annual subscription, so I'm dividing the revenue by 12 to get the MRR.

The Gumroad dashboard reports total revenue of $270, which equates to $22.50/m.

Although the package was aimed at supporters, a couple of users have subscribed because they like what Pod Hunt is doing!

    I dig that approach. πŸ‘Œ

    1. 1

      Thanks Justin! Moving quickly :)

  2. 2

Awesome work. I really like the example you're setting for pushing features out quickly. Testing payments in one night instead of taking weeks or longer to implement a payment solution is smart. Go Pod Hunt!

    1. 1

Thanks Cameron. I've always tried to find the best way to solve the problem before me, without being fixated on doing things one way.

It's funny to see the debate I see happening around code and no-code, just find the best way to build and ship, based on the time you have and the features you need.

I've been coding for over 30 years, and still ship with no-code!

  3. 2

Congrats! This is a great approach. I think it was smart to go the Gumroad route and then update the record manually. I never thought of that. I'm going to give this a try on one of my products. Thanks.

    1. 1

Definitely as long as the volume is low enough, this should work pretty well!

That would be a good problem to have, to have so many orders coming in you have to automate it more πŸ˜€

  4. 2

Hey @Mubs, can a podcast hosting company support or advertise? I'd love to support you on this.

    1. 1

I don't think being a supporter make sense for a hosting company. I'm working on self service solution for advertising, I think that will be the best way to move forward.

Drop me an email (me-at-mubs.me) or DM me on Twitter and I can share some details.

      1. 2

Question for ya, do you think that's the best feature to do now?

Why not wait until you have user scale? I'm sure at this time, the value for advertisers won't match the impressions/visits. I'm more of a supporter of the idea at this stage.

        1. 1

A number of people have asked for this now, and don't get me wrong it'll take a while to get there fully, but starting with something simple that works for people interested now won't be a huge lift.

As I mentioned what I have in place for podcast/user supporting, doesn't really work for hosting (and other types of businesses) so I'm figuring out a simple way to get you/them on board.

No not a marketplace, this is just for placement on Pod Hunt, I have no interest (yet at least) to do anything with the podcasts themselves.

          1. 1

Ah ok. I assumed you’d be moving to ladder up: 1. sponsor site, 2. advertise on site, 3. connect advertisers with podcasters (again I’m assuming there is an opportunity to create value here and capture some of it).

            1. 1

Way too early in Pod Hunt's life to do that πŸ˜€ Perhaps at some point, but for now still a long way to go to solve the problem of discovery.

        2. 1

Im guessing this is strategic and a key part of the business model, to help podcasters get their own paying advertisers :)

    Congrats Mubs!

Where do you see the future monetization of Pod Hunt going?

Will podcasters be able to pay to have their podcast stay near the top, like Product Hunt does with their "Promoted" slot?

    1. 1

Thanks, and not totally sure yet!

I'd really like to stay away from anything that impacts the leaderboard directly, so maybe something where a podcast host can sponsor a category and have their podcast appear near the top of a category page.

Interested to hear what hosts would like to see, been trying to talk to a few react appropriately.

      1. 2

Are you deliberately restricting to podcast hosts/podcasts? I and many other service/products for podcasters would be interested in reaching your audience at some point!

        1. 1

Yes right now the way the supporter feature works, only makes sense for podcast host/listeners.

Definitely would be interested in chatting with you about how you'd like to be integrated in the experience.

          1. 1

            Happy to chat any time!

  7. 2

Nice one. Great example of starting small and charging early

    1. 1

Thanks! I've been hesitant to monetize early in the past, but makes so much sense to test as early as possible!

  8. 2

Just become a supporter (I didn't know it was possible before). Awesome work Mubs!

    1. 1

Thanks! Marked you as a supporter so you're listed too now!

August 26, 2019 1 Month old today

Today marks the one month anniversary of Pod Hunt (podhunt.app).

I'm very happy with what I've been able to develop, as well as the response to Pod Hunt.

Since the official launch last week, I've been focused crafting the roadmap for next 3-6 months of Pod Hunt.

The immediate focus (based on user feedback) is providing an episode preview.

I've been testing a few different ways to do this, and am conducting a Twitter poll (https://twitter.com/podhuntapp/status/1165635716392595456) to get more user feedback.

Since Pod Hunt passed some important milestones this weekend, I thought it would be a good time to share some more updated metrics.

Impressive! Great work. How much time have you spent on Pod Hunt so far?

    1. 1

Haven't really been tracking, but probably an average of about 3h per day so far. Less now that the site is live.

So about 90-100h so far in total, which is about an $2/hr rate so far πŸ˜€

      1. 2

That's awesome! Do you plan to increase the amount of time you spend on it? Or are you happy with the progress and think 3 hrs/day will be enough?

        1. 1

          Depends πŸ˜€

This is still a nights and weekend project, but if it continues to get traction, and revenue then definitely. If not, I'll keep pushing it forward at the pace I have.

  2. 2

    That's some great numbers, congrats

August 23, 2019 #1 on Product Hunt

πŸš€ On Tuesday I launched Pod Hunt on Product Hunt. Things went better than I could have hoped for.

I had planned to wake up early and scheduled the hunt for 6am (est), I don't like to schedule posts to appear for when I'm not going to be around to respond to comments to share the page on social media.

⏰ I ended up not being able to sleep, so I worked on some last minute features instead πŸ˜€ I chatted with the PH team and they moved up the schedule, and it appeared on the homepage around 3:45am (est).

It had a little catching up todo, as there were some products already close to 50 votes. Slowly but surely Pod Hunt moved up the homepage, and by 8am it was in #1. It stayed there for the rest of the day.

Being around to share the page, really helps to get early traction. I had scheduled an email to go out around 9am to the newsletter and ship subscribers. Support from the subscribers made sure we'd stay #1.

Since we made it to the top 5, Pod Hunt would be included in the newsletter the next day. If we rank in the top hunts of the week, we'll be included in the weekly newsletter on Monday. Not sure if we'll make that yet, but keeping the fingers crossed!

Below are the stats thru the end of Thursday:

πŸ’΅ Revenue (supporters)

(The changes displayed, are based on the pre-launch numbers I posted previously.)

I don't typically launch sites on Tuesday. That is the domain of well funded startups, and unicorns to announce new products. Pod Hunt felt different than other products and so I decided Tuesday was the right day, and ended up beating some well funded competition.

As I was setting up for the launch, I found out that I’d been selected to interview to possibly join Weekend Build program by Weekend Fund. They had received over 650 applications, so I sure the competition was very stiff.

Pod Hunt is still less than one month old, all things considered a very good launch, and a rewarding 28 days (no πŸ§Ÿβ€β™‚οΈ here).

Congrats! Hoping to launch something new in the coming weeks. Any other tips or tricks for a successful launch? Unfortunately don't have a newsletter

    1. 2

Wait til you have a newsletter ;-) Otherwise you'll need to leverage traffic from other sources.

Make sure that you link to the Product Hunt page, from your site, you can do it custom or use the embed that Product Hunt now offers.

Once you're page is featured on Product Hunt, try and drive traffic to your site by submitting to other places that make sense (here on IH, hacker news, relevant sub-reddits that allow it, etc).

The hope being that you create a feedback loop that lifts you up the homepage.

      Good luck!

August 20, 2019 Launched on Product Hunt

After 30 days of building it's time to officially launch Pod Hunt, on Product Hunt off course:

https://www.producthunt.com/posts/pod-hunt

I know 30 days seems short, but as someone who typically launches in days (if not hours), this has been a slow and deliberate process.

I talked with a lot of users after the soft launch, 2 weeks ago, and tried to address the concerns they raised.

Pod Hunt is effectively a 2 sided market, and I wanted to make sure it worked for both the people creating podcasts and those listening to them.

I wanted to share some prelaunch statistics, so we have something to compare to later!

Congrats @Mubs very impressive numbers indeed and really nice website.

    Feedback:

Add a link to podcast and category in listing page
    [https://imgur.com/Zk1MC5m]

    Question
What is the stack of the website? Pretty impressive load (based on your tweet)

    1. 2

Yep going to rethink the UX a little around the listing, the podcast and category pages are all pretty new :)

The website is built on Laravel PHP (Ubuntu server, Nginx, MySQL), all hosted on a single Digitialocean droplet.

      1. 2

PHP and Mysql with this load? Well done ;)

        1. 2

          PHP/MySQL gets a bad wrap.

I once had a site do 350K pages in a single day, running PHP/MySQL on a $5/month Digital ocean droplet, not a static site either!

I upgraded it to the $20/month server, and in the next 2 days it did 1M πŸ˜€

      2. 2

Poor me, Didn't expect PHP in there :-/ Thanks for sharing it!

      Thanks, will get that fixed.

  3. 2

Hey just seen Pod Hunt performing great on PH, seems that you really take the time to read user's feedback, love to find out how makers are putting their eyes on podcasts recently :)

    1. 1

Of the people I spoke with, currently most people rely on recommendations from friends or influencers.

Pod Hunt actually encourages this, but reduces the friction. Making the process easier for everyone involved.

August 18, 2019 Custom share images

I now automatically generate custom share images for each of the podcast episodes when they are submitted to Pod Hunt.

I think it's a hidden detail that really helps to get attention to the links when they are shared on social media sites.

I usually get questions about how I do this, so I wrote about how I implemented it, as well as a no-code option I've used in the past.

If you have any questions just let me know!

Wow, so timely! I literally just built a little service to do this as well, it’s called Link Cards. It’s only a week old, but I’m already using it to generate the images on another site I am building, Pkg Stats.

Link Cards is similar to your setup, you create a project that generates a subdomain to use within the meta tags of your site, (ex. https://pkgstats.linkcards.io). And the full url to generate the image is just that subdomain, plus a url encoded string of the page to screenshot on your site, https://pkgstats.linkcards.io/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pkgstats.com%2Fshare%2Fpkg%3Areact.jpg?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pkgstats.com%2Fpkg%3Areact (the added url query parameter is not necessary for the screenshot generation, but lets you associate the page you are screenshot’ing to the page that is being shared by the image so you can easily link back to it via the Link Cards admin).

It’s still pretty early and I am cleaning up the admin a bit and getting subscriptions setup, but if anyone is interested in trying it out let me know and I can send you an invite code (DM me @ryanhefner.

This is great! I’m wondering if you could share the code you use to generate the images? I’ve found a few examples out there but they’re all undocumented or really confusing.

All of my code will be very Laravel specific, assuming that's what you're looking for I can update my post with some code snippets tonight.

Gotcha! Is it something that can run standalone, or is it deeply tied into your app?

I've been struggling to find good examples of something like this that I can pass in text and resources (like your first example) but are more customizable in appearance (like your second example).

Sounds like you're looking for something more like:
          https://htmlcsstoimage.com

That does does basically what I do in my app, but more general and as a hosted service.

OOOO this is nice. I still need to build a little something that grabs URL params and hits their API but even my mediocre code skills can pull that off I think πŸ˜„

I really agree with you, contextual images can really help with share links and even in newsletters.

I'm working on a no-code tool that solves this exact problem. No overlays or headless browsers needed. It works all on the query-params in the URL of the image

Would love to get your thoughts - www.dynamicimg.io

August 12, 2019 Just crossed 5000 page views

Updating my weekly metrics and noticed that Pod Hunt passed 5000 page views in total on Sunday.

Full stats:

πŸ“„ Pageviews: 5,081

🏠 Visitors: 1,284

πŸ™β€β™€οΈ Users: 165

🐦 Followers: 164

πŸ“Ό Episodes: 129

βœ‰οΈ Subscribers: 58

The bulk of the traffic is coming from podcast hosts submitting their episode to Pod Hunt and then sharing the link on social media. I think that means Pod Hunt is "going viral" 🀣

Started seeing the first trickle of traffic coming from SEO, mostly people search for "PodHunt", where the website is ranking 3rd in the results. Made it to the first page for "Pod Hunt".

Almost ready for the official launch that will be coming next week!

Podcast discovery is broken and most attempts fail to recognize we listen to episodes, so why not discover episodes instead of Podcasts?!?
