November 25, 2020 Launched a community for founders

About a week ago I launched Swipe as a community for founders. All Swipe customers have free forever access, but the community is switching to a paid model. All new members will be asked to pay a monthly or an annual fee (with a lifetime option).

Some benefits of communities:

  1. Moats
  2. More hands on
  3. Accountability

Very excited for the future of Swipe and the members who participate!

Right now I am taking intro calls with anyone who wants to talk who is already part of the community. I'm also gathering feedback and will use that to improve the space and provide the connections to let people grow their businesses.

October 25, 2020 Added Parity Pricing, made some sales

Yesterday I added Parity Bar to Swipe. Parity Bar allows you to set discounts based on where people are coming from geographically speaking. This makes products a bit more affordable to people in countries with lower costs of living and lower incomes.

To my surprise, I saw 4 sales come in almost right away -- as soon as I announced it on Twitter.

Also announced student discounts and had two students DM me, who then purchased.

Parity pricing works ;)

I'll be monitoring for abuse of course, but otherwise happy with the decision!

    Hey Gene,

Looking at doing Parity Pricing for Software Ideas soon, a couple questions for you if you don't mind!

    1. What was the process of creating the coupons? Does it work well enough?
    2. Any issues of fraud yet, and how are you monitoring for fraud?
    3. If you do any affiliate / discounts, how did you set up Parity Pricing to play nicely with those other discounts?

Would really appreciate your insight here!

    1. 1

      Hey Kevin ;)

      1. After installing parity bar code, I went to Gumroad's coupons page and created the coupons for the recommended amount off. I then plugged those codes into the settings in Parity Bar.
      2. No issues with fraud that I know of yet. I manually spot check who is buying and their names seem to indicate they are from that country. I realize this is a very poor way of monitoring but frankly I don't care all that much. If someone goes to great lengths to cheat me, f' it. I just hope they do really well with their SaaS so they can come back and buy it legitimately ;)
      3. I do have affiliate discounts, but I don't do anything special with parity bar. Visitors can claim whichever discount is best for them.

This is all part of my "abundance" mindset. Give people access for the most reasonable price to them. Price is not really the point.

      1. 1

Awesome, thanks Gene! So in other words you might offer a discount of 20% through an affiliate link, but a 50% discount through PPP. So if an affiliate sends someone to your website but the user clicks the 50% discount, does the affiliate get paid? That's what I'm still trying to figure out for my own product.

        1. 2

If they use an affiliate link the affiliate gets paid no matter which discount is used.

  2. 1

This is super interesting and I was considering it too.
I think it was in one of the latest IH newsletters?

How does Parity Bar work? Is it easy to implement?

    1. 2

      https://paritybar.com/

Just a snippet you add to your site.

Have to create discount codes manually.

        Oh cool! Thanks!
I will try that out and let's see how it goes!

October 12, 2020 Post reached front page of HN with 10k views

I wrote a post on my blog and shared it with HN. With a bit of work and a bit of luck it reached the front page. Sadly, I was not awake to see how long it stayed up there, but it generated 10k pageviews as of right now.

This generated $500 in sales. Not much, but something!

https://www.swipe.page/p/from-an-airtable-to-10k-in-side-income

Lessons from sharing on HN:

  • Write for the technical audience. I could have just copy / pasted my article from IH, but I decided to write a new one that had more technical details.

  • Share the HN post with friends so they can give you the initial upvote push. You'll still need a substantive post to last through the day, so it's not a sure thing.

  • You only need about 8 points / upvotes and some engagement for the thing to start ranking. I noticed after about 8 points it jumped to 30 and so forth.. people started seeing it.

It was definitely a fun ride, just too bad that I was asleep for most of it (kid was waking up and crying).

Let me know how your HN posts went, would love to analyze them!

October 11, 2020 Up to $9.2k in total sales now

Pretty happy that today Swipe is up to 9.2k sales. I had a few come in yesterday, nothing today though.

To get the ball rolling, I added a blog to the site, and wrote my first post: https://www.swipe.page/p/from-an-airtable-to-10k-in-side-income

I also started an ebook, which is now almost finished. It will be a version of my IH post, but with more details, examples - expanded version. I will sell this on Gumroad and promote it on PH once again... Question is: will it do well this time? Remains to be seen.

Oh, I am giving away 5 free copies of the extended ebook to my subscribers, so if you want one, just enter your email and you qualify ;)

Cheers!

Congrats Gene. I am following you on Twitter and I'm grateful that you're sharing your journey with details.
I like that you even include the tools you're using. For example mentioning ConvertKit for your new landing page two days ago.

All the best and keep up the great spirit.

Thank you, Oras! Glad you find my updates worthy of your precious attention ! I hope to not disappoint:) let’s connect in Twitter Dm, that’s where the fun is - the secret to this whole networking thing.

Congrats on your success, Gene. I've been really inspired by your story and posts on Indie Hackers. I'm also building an Airtable product so I smiled when I saw you were originally inspired to create Swipe after reading about Scrapbook (or one of your inspirations anyway. I can't remember exactly) as that's what inspired me to start my product.

I'm hoping to make my product a monthly subscription if it goes well and take payment through Thrivecart at first (because of the instant payment), then possibly switch to Gumroad. Look forward to following your progress. Just signed up to your newsletter. Hopefully I can follow in your footsteps.

Wow Tobe! Your words mean more to me than anything I can make or earn with my products. I'm serious. People who say they have been inspired to do something are coming out of the woodwork and the feeling of having a tiny little impact on someone's life is worth all the effort!

Monthly subscriptions are tricky for info products unless they are a course. But, don't let my word in that stop you from trying! Keep me updated on what you are working on, I'd love to follow and see how it goes!

      Cheers!

October 6, 2020 Sold all 100 copies - raising price to $157

Due to the launch being fairly successful and selling out 100 copies, Swipe has now moved into the 2nd tier. The new price is $157 for the next 50 copies. After that it's $187 for 25 copies.

I use this strategy to ramp up demand (scarcity / urgency) and build up early testimonials -- which I now have plenty of.

October 1, 2020 Launched on Product Hunt!

Hey friends! The day has come that Swipe has launched on Product Hunt!

https://www.producthunt.com/posts/swipe-c3ed98db-a38c-456b-ada2-e01708b74583

There is a 20% Discount code for the first 100 orders, in case you fancy a copy.

WHY SWIPE

I've been doing conversion audits for quite some time. It was never meant to be a full time gig -- I mostly focused on product design. But, as more and more people asked me about the audits, I decided to turn it into a service. Now, most of my consulting income comes from this.

While providing audits, I realized smaller startups and bootstrappers would actually benefit from some of the things I was noting for my clients, but knew they would not have the budget for a full-blown audit .. and in many cases, it just wouldn't make sense. So I created a product version that covers a wide base of situations -- but narrowed it to SaaS.

The inspiration came after seeing @kacper launch Scrapbook. In fact, I was one of his early customers! Great product btw!

After completing an early version of the product, I announced it here and got my first sale. This was very encouraging. I knew there was an audience because people came to me for audits.. it was pre-validated.

I then decide to try to sell it some more before launching. I got 9 more sales by building in the open and tweeting about Swipe occasionally. One other sale came from a cold email -- which was also inspiring because now I have a blueprint for doing more cold emails ;)

I gotta say, there was a significant delay between when I announced this product and before the launch -- but this was mostly because of us adding a new family member ;) I am hoping now that I am slowly regaining my time, I'll have more of it to devote to the product itself, and to ongoing promotion.

To date, Swipe has sold just under $1k.

Going forward I plan on starting blogging, running facebook ads, collaborations (email newsletters), and keep building in the open.

I'm also working on another Swipe product for e-commerce, but the goal is to get 100 sales on this one before moving on to the next.

I really appreciate all the people who have been tremendously supporting along the way! Even though this is an info product with no recurring revenue, it gives me some base to start promoting it at some scale. Not to mention, I already got a few SaaS ideas by building this, so that may be next!

September 10, 2020 First sale from my first affiliate

Last week I made an affiliate deal with https://openstartup.dev/

We set up a custom link for his audience and today I noticed a sale with the affiliate link!

My affiliate made his first sale / my first affiliate sale too. Pretty excited!

I was so excited that I set up a page for more affiliate applications (let them come to me as I tweet). https://www.swipe.page/affiliates

This doesn't mean I won't pursue one-on-one relationships in DMs and Emails (on the contrary), but it does open up my product to new channels and audiences at no up front cost.

I'll keep it updates here how it goes!

August 28, 2020 Made some sales, updated landing page, discounts

It turns out, building in the open gets you some sales. I've been talking about Swipe on my Twitter and on IndieLog and managed to get some sales.

The product is inching closer to a larger release. I still have a few to dos, but here are some things I've done recently:

  1. Updated the landing page copy to follow PAS copywriting formula.
  2. Implemented refer-based discounts so if you go to a page like https://www.swipe.page/?dc=ih you'll see an IH-specific discount ;)
  3. Added more urgency to the page, and will implement timers soon (not working yet in the discount bars ;(

My only to-do left now is to update the sample file with some better items and I think it'll be ready for a wider release -- here, on HN, PH and hopefully other places. I'm still working on the strategy for those ;)

August 11, 2020 New landing page, logo and product updates

Today I managed to make a lot of progress on my new landing page. It still needs work (mobile responsiveness is a bit broken) but it's getting there!

I also updated the product quite a bit!

  • Removed all the e-commerce items (this will be a separate product)
  • Added new items specific to SaaS

I don't think it's ready for any sort of PH launch even though I'm already confident about the contents of the product.

For now, I'll focus on manually finding some fist customers to see what kind of feedback they might have.

May 26, 2020 1st Sale!

Woke up to a gumroad email - lifetime access sale for $87. Wow! Yesterday I got the first newsletter sub and now 1st product sale. I'm stoked!

Let's see... I am trying to figure out what I can tell you (if you haven't sold anything) to be helpful...

I guess here is what I would say:

  1. DO IT. Make something. Stop learning and stop reading. You will never learn it all. Stop planning. Just start.

  2. Listen to people like James Clear - focus on 1% daily effort. Don't overwhelm yourself thinking about the end goal. Want to write a post? Don't write a post... write the 1st sentence. Then the 2nd. Don't even format it. Just write, get it all out.

  3. Charge for it. More than you think. I learned this from my consulting career. What seems like a huge price tag to some, is a drop in the ocean for others. You don't have to satisfy everyone. If people cannot meet your ask, then they will go find another offer. That's okay. Just get the people who are willing to pay.

  4. Release it much earlier than you think. My product is not finished - far from it. I pushed it out anyway! If the person is dissatisfied with the state they found it in then I will 100% refund them. No problem. Get feedback asap. I did this even before I published it - ran it by some growth designer people and they told me some valuable insights.

The great news is I got some confidence to keep doing this. The bad news is I got 2 part-time jobs - one to write the newsletter and the other to make Swipe.page better. But hey.. this is what I was aiming for.

My next goal is 5 paid subs and 5 sales for Swipe. In the meantime, I have to make both better and
