Yesterdays Weather
Today's weather compared to yesterday's.
A new update for Yesterdays Weather just hit iOS and Android app stores... because the Dark Sky weather api is being shut down at the end of 2020, I needed to redo the entire "weather sentence" API that Yesterdays Weather is built off of.
In the process of switching to the Open Weather API, I improved the variables and weighting of the weather sentence itself. Now, in addition to "feels like" temp, precip, and wind speed, it also factors in humidity and cloud cover!
The one thing missing (over the entire past year since it was last updated!) is a quick view of the current temp on the home screen... that's fixed, too! It now shows the weather sentence... like "Currently, it's 4 degrees warmer than yesterday, but it's less humid" and then a forecast sentence underneath... like "Now 40, Today 56/32, No rain."

The newest version of Yesterdays Weather went live in the iOS app store yesterday. Now both iOS and Android can find weather worldwide, and info can be displayed in °F/MPH or °C/KPH.

I preach to clients and friends that building a business is about everyday consistency- not launch days and demo days.
To that end, I just quietly put it up there, and I didn't plan much. This runs counter to my last two PH launches, where I did a ton of planning. One went super well, one was just ok. We'll see what happens this time!
After 2 rejections and 25 days of a third review, the Yesterdays Weather iOS app is now live in the app store.
Now that iOS and Android are good to go, I have a huge list of really cool improvements to make to the app itself (which will push to both platforms).
One of the most important is expanding outside of the US (lots of requests for that), so that will be high priority!
Looking forward to building more on this. It's one of the simplest, yet most rewarding side projects... people really seem to get it and like it right away!
Try the web app for free, and if it seems like something you'd want more accessible on your phone, the app is a one-time $2.99 for ongoing improvements!
Since posting about this yesterday on Twitter, I've gotten an interview request, a podcast request, and a really interesting offer to visually diagram how the app works behind the scenes.
The attention is mostly because the app(s), web app, and website are all built with no-code! (Thunkable, Bubble, and Carrd)
I'll share all that stuff as it comes out.

Hey Drew! Congrats on going live! I’m also doing a B2C iOS app (Moon). I’m curious if you think the one time $3 is sustainable. I have no idea how I’m going to make decent money off a b2c app lol

I don't actually think the $3 is sustainable, haha.
But... there's a lot more to each project we do than just the money, so I know that it will 1) bring new and hopefully better opportunities in the future and 2) contribute at least some money to my overall income each month, making life that much easier.
It doesn't take effort for me to run it, also, so that's a factor. I can afford to be less interested in monetizing since it's not pulling me away from other things.
My No Code List project, on the other hand... I spend way too much time on that for the $0 it brings in each month 😂

Also, in your specific case, imagine if you had the Indie Hackers mobile app, and everyone starts using it... that's likely worth a lot more in connections and opportunities than any single-digit subscription fee.

And now I’m curious how I you arrived that the $3 price point. Did you base it off similar apps? I’m not well-versed in weather apps.

I based it on almost nothing actually (which I normally would not do)... I had the same app in the app store a few years ago, and I never charged for it. Lots of people used it, and it had great reviews. Ultimately I let it stagnate and eventually removed it, so when I built this new version (for a no-code experiment at first), I decided to charge for it. I thought $2.99 seemed low enough, but high end-ish for a weather app. Haha.
$1.99 might be better (some feedback I've gotten), but I like erring on the high side.
If no one bought it, I would have changed the price right away probably, but a few people have paid, so I'll see how it goes with this price for a little while.

The Android version of Yesterdays Weather just went live in the Play Store.
The iOS app was originally denied, but I also resubmitted an updated version there, too. 🤞
App updates include:
- More weather comparisons (temperature, wind speed, humidity, etc)
- A forecast (except in the web app version)
- A more native-feeling bottom bar navigation
Due to the very generic name, it's hard to search for, but there's a link to download from yesterdaysweather.com!

I've been waiting for app store approval to make this an official IH product, but I ran into some issues getting the app approved in the app store! One is something I need to figure out with Thunkable, but the other is because they're saying the app is too similar to a the web app...
So while I figure out what to do, I added more detailed stats to the web app, and I'll keep building it out while I try to figure out the app store.
This one's been a side project for 7 years, so it's really cool to see its current form. Since the app was removed and not approved, I've received several emails from people who've been using it every day... and it hasn't been available to download new for at least 2 years! 🤯
It blows my mind that the original concept of Yesterday's Weather is still relevant 7 years later! I was randomly reading the reviews of the old app, and I felt a strong need to relaunch the app.
This time, I took advantage of no-code tools. Using the original custom API, I built a native app on top of it with Thunkable, I built a web app version with Bubble, and I built a quick marketing site in Carrd.
No-code is amazing, but when coupled with a custom API, it becomes really powerful!
Two years after the app launch, I revamped it, separated the data into an API, and added a web app version.
The web app and API went live, but the new iOS version (a chatbot app) never made it into the app store.
Sometime around iOS 11, the original iOS app was removed from the app store.
I'm not sure about this date, but sometime around here, Yesterday's Weather launched in the iOS app store, as an app built with Phone Gap.
The goal was definitely to scratch my own itch and display the weather exactly as I wanted to see it... compared to the same time the day before.
