Marketing Examples
Real World Marketing Examples.
Good afternoon comrades!
My Marketing Examples newsletter reached the 42,000 mark!

I explained how I grew my newsletter to 20,000 in this case study.
TLDR. My newsletter is my content marketing. I share it across the internet. And then ask if people would like to subscribe.
And... to be honest, the strategy hasn't really changed.

If there's a lesson, maybe it's go all in. I've haven't started a podcast. I stopped doing YouTube. I've turned down every consultancy gig.
Oh, here's something. I did change my newsletter popup. I wanted to make it vibrant. That improved conversion by 40% or so!

And The Hustle featured me in their newsletter. Which gave me a lovely boost!
4 months ago I told myself 50k for the year would be awesome. So I've got 8,000 more to go! The race is on.
If you'd like to learn more about marketing from one real world example each each week perhaps you'd like to subscribe. It's a friendly place.
Thanks for reading :)
Previous milestones I’ve wrote some long strategy about how to do Twitter.
But I feel like that can distract from how simple it can be. This tweet is the formula I followed:

So I decided why should people follow the account: to learn marketing from real examples.
And I started posting. My style started off as a rip off of Steve Schoger. and slowly morphed into my own thing.
And then I spent 14 months doing literally nothing other than coming up with marketing examples to share. It's pretty much a full time job.
If there is a lesson it's keep going. Because it only gets easier.
Back in the day I'd publish a tip and get 10 new followers. Now one can add 1000 followers.

Thanks for the support. Over and out.

Congrats! This sentence tickled my curiosity: "And then I spent 14 months doing literally nothing other than coming up with marketing examples to share. It's pretty much a full time job."
How do you feel about marketing now? Does it still excite you? Do you think you'll get sick of it?-
1
Hey @debbie_w, @KarimDaghari
Yeah. I still really enjoy it.
Sometimes I get fed up but all I need is a day or two off and the fire is back in the belly :)
I'm lucky to be working for me. And making more money (fingers crossed) will be really motivating as well :)

Harry, congrats! You have a style that's uniquely and distinctly you.
Looking forward to you breaking the 100k follower mark. Will keep sending people your way.

lovely message. cheers Janel. and thank you soooo much for recommending people. really appreciate it

Congrats man, loved your last newsletter. Keep killin' it!
-

You're an inspiration in this case Harry. Do you do anything specific to reach new followers as well? Like replying to specific tags or tagging specific people?
-
1
Haha. Cheers John. One of those things where when you hit 10k all that stuff just isn't worth the time.
I'm finding my Instagram growth a bit harder (just started). So trying to work out a few tricks like that to push the numbers up :_)

Big congrats! Long time follower here :)

Cheers Christian. Appreciate it :)

Epic milestone Harry. Congrats!

Congratulations on reaching your milestone!
It seems your advice is pretty similar to what Daniel Vassallo (https://twitter.com/dvassallo) says in his Twitter course.
-
1
Thanks Harry!
Was your strategy only to "post post post" and let the followers come?
Or did you get followers other ways too (like commenting on influencer posts, searching hashtags and commenting, upselling twitter account from other websites)?
-
2
post post post. but also make friends on the platform as well
also i push my twitter on my newsletter. so everyone who joins gets a line about signing up.
i ran like $100 of ads as well which pulled in a few followers in the early days as well :)

Hola. Buenos Dias.
My Marketing Examples Twitter account hit 50k followers!
Same strategy as it always was:
- Every article is broken down in a thread.
- Quick visual tips.
I also changed the name:
Marketing Examples → Harry's Marketing Examples
Explained my reasons here:
Anyone from the UK is probably aware of the public rallying behind Joe Wicks P.E. livestreams over lockdown.
The amount of press and new YouTube + Instagram followers he got will return tens of millions of pounds down the line. I believe he's already signed a multimillion deal for a new cookery book.
If Joe made The Body Coach a faceless company there is absolutely no way he'd have the publics backing in the way it transpired.
Obviously this isn't the case for every company. But when you're in the content creation space there's a lot of advantages to having a real person at the helm.
Imagine if you scratched J.K. Rowling's name of the Harry Potter books. And instead it was authored by “Bloomsbury media”. Not as magical!
There's definitely cons as well:
- Harder to sell
- Confusing for existing followers
- Less of an “authority”
But I just didn't see them as close to outweighing the pros.
Anyway. That's a wrap from me. I'll do a write up in a couple of months about the effect of making the company more personal.
Cya at 60k :)

In the past couple of days I've seen you twice on twitter, decided to follow you, and now I see you pop up on Indie Hackers—you must be doing something right! As someone in the early stages of attempting to build a community, I'll be studying your moves and advice closely from now on if you don't mind :)
Quick question regarding your social following: would you recommend attempting to gain a following on social media at the very beginnings of a project, or waiting until you have a small audience to seed those accounts with? With my current project, my goal is to build an email list over the coming months filled mainly be traffic garnered from organic traffic to my website. I do want a social media presence for this project, but I worry about the negative association that comes with having a small amount of followers (especially the dreaded zero).
My current plan was to let the website build a following, then launch social media accounts gradually to said following, so the account can skip the initial low follower phase.
What do you think? Forget the negative perception of low-follower accounts and go live with a social media presence ASAP, or give it some time so I have an initial audience on these social platforms upon creating the accounts?

Nice! Your tips actually helped me write better!

Hola Harry. I dig this. It also fits well with your previous post that landing pages need real faces from real people.
ps. It's buenos días :)

Love it! I also believe in the power of personal brands, especially if it’s true. Why pretend you are a faceless corp, if you can be an inspiring person! Great move, Harry

Looking at the success of your reveal tweet, people seem to like it.
I'm sure it's the right decision in the long term. Public accountability always helps.

time will tell. was surprised people cared that much tbh. but no complaints :)

Congratulations! Amazing results!
I'm trying to make visual tips for UX/UI and these tweets don't get any upvotes or likes. While memes and jokes might go viral =(
This is an example: https://twitter.com/vponamariov/status/1296802517486055424
It takes much time to produce such content. I know it's not perfect but still... hm...
-
1
Nice! What made you do this instead of just rebranding as Harry Dry?
-
1
I think that's a positive change. You turn yourself into a brand and I think 'Harry's Marketing Examples' is more recognisable. Your tips are genius so it's only a matter of time until 60k!

nothing changes other than social media.
i just think on social media there's so many advantages to being a real person

So my marketing newsletter crossed 27,500 subscribers. Still with an open rate of 50% somehow. I thought I’d do a little update.

It feels like yesterday when I was getting 10 new subscribers a day. Today I’m averaging over 100. And 1000 a week!
The benefits from hard work compound over time. You’ve just got to stay in the game long enough to reap them.
My high level strategy
People say “bet on YouTube, bet on TikTok, SEO, etc .”
But the only thing we know for sure is that it’s only going to get easier for people to share stuff.
So my energy goes into writing the best stuff I can and trusting word of mouth.
And it works. Whether thats a subscriber on Twitter telling their followers. Or Dave Gerhardt and Neil Patel on their podcasts.
I could work quicker. But that's the short term strategy. The long game is being the best and trusting people will talk about it.
That's why I will overtake Hubspot one day. SEO won't beat the PEOPLE 😂
It's all in the small details
Let me give you an example.
I was writing about Grubhub’s link building. It was Friday. I’d been working on this article all week. I really wanted to publish it and enjoy my weekend. But the conclusion was flat.
So I worked on it Saturday morning and found the words to sum it up.
That's the power of good SEO. Plant an orchard. And you're eating fruit everyday. The long game is the shortcut.
Anyhow, I ended up getting 4 or 5 messages specifically about the conclusion. 4 or 5 replies equates to more like 400 or 500 people who appreciated it.
And it made me think. People really do notice the details.
That's all folks
Here's my analytics from around January in case you wanted to see where my subscribers come from. You see “goal completions” on the right. That's new subscribers.

Thanks for reading. In case you want to check out my newsletter for yourself here's a link.
I share a new marketing case study every week. Short, sweet and practical. Any questions, hmu :)

100 new subscribers per day is amazing, congrats!
What is your strategy to monetize them?-
7
cheers.
no strategy atm. I've thought about it. And my conclusion was
If I create the best marketing resource in the world, i won't have to worry about making money
maybe young and näive. but I'll be in acquisition mode till 100k. long game the shortcut
-
2
With 100k subscribers, you'll certainly have options. Don't wait too long to think about it though - monetization will keep the lights on and give you the ability to keep doing this for much longer. Otherwise you'll end up needing to take investors on at some point while still figuring it out.
-
2
I totally agree

Loving your content Harry - keep them coming
-

This might explain why some people don't open your email, I'm an email subscriber of yours, but sometimes don't open your email because I've already read the content on twitter.

Congrats Harry, you're crushing it! Big fan of short newsletters and you do this really well.

Amazing to see your growth, Harry!

Awesome stuff Harry, congrats!
I didn't quite understand what you meant by "That's why I will overtake Hubspot one day"?
-
1
hubspot have an marketing newsletter. fairly trashy stuff imo. they get all their subs through SEO. So I'm saying the PEOPLE (word of mouth) will see me beat them

Isn't that the Seth Rogen quote from 40yo virgin about planting seeds? ;)
Out of curiosity, where would you say your network/followers were at before you started marketingexamples? Were you starting from zero?

maybe 1500 followers on my personal twitter account. and a few indie hacker friends

Hey, Harry, phenomenal work.
Three questions:
- Do you focus on acquiring users from specific geos?
- Do you spend money on ads? If so, on which platforms?
- How many new articles/examples do you publish a week? (I could infer 1 per week but I wanted to be sure).
One suggestion for monetisation (that's in the spirit of your approach)—try creating a Patreon account that people can use to make donations if they appreciate your work. I have a much (much) smaller site, focussed on more contentious topics and I've had a couple of people donate to me, so I'm sure you'd get (at least) a few thousand pounds in donations.
-

Congratulations Harry! Your content is great, and your audience is eager for more. I read your newsletter and website religiously. I remember when you started and I read all your articles and still needed more.
Just some UI/UX issue of how I consume your content (maybe there are others like me)
I go to your website, after your newsletter or when I’m researching.
I start picking a bunch of articles, but the website impedes the cmd-click on an article to open it in a new tab to later read those. Instead I need to left-click and “open in a new tab” which is more cumbersome. Would be nice if you can fix that.Thank you for your great content!

thanks a lot martin. lovely message. appreciate it. will take a look!

Just subscribed! Loved your Kanye story too! I wish I was half the marketer you are. I would do my product a lot more justice... :/ Keep inspiring!
-
2
Oh sweet. Thank you Christina.
Keep going with Marvin. Looks cool. I've saw people on Twitter share it. If you make the best product and built it in the public (on Twitter) word will spread.
Transparency a great marketing play for us startups.
Sorry to give unsolicited advice, but just from the website I find the “beating procrastination” angle stronger than the “getting more done” angle from a branding / copywriting perspective.
-
1
I thought about doing the transparency play, but then never did (see why I have a procrastination startup?)
I agree with your assessment on angle. I have to do more tests. Right now our best customers is the to-do list app power user, who has tried many but sees right away that Marvin is superior. But they often don't identify as a procrastinator. But that is the core audience I want to help, which was my vision all along. Tricky.

100k before the end of the year? Well done with everything - I think everyone can see you truly care about the case studies you publish.
Seems Twitter is by far the best social media platform when it comes to subscribers. Any idea why that is? Even if it's just speculating, would be interesting to hear your thoughts.
I know you've put in the time to have a dedicated strategy for each platform, yet the one with the most users (FB) pales in comparison to "little" Twitter.
-
1
Appreciate the praise. 100k by December would be insane! 50k would even pretty good haha. But you never know how things compound.
I'm a big believer in not spreading too thin. So Twitter and LinkedIn are the only social channels I properly focus on. On Facebook I just piggy-back on other pages. Haven't got the time to fully dedicate myself to FB. So that's probably why ...
-
1
Makes sense. I do like the conversational aspect of Twitter, it's the one platform I am trying to get more involved on.
As for the 100k mark... Definitely not easy but not impossible either. It really depends on how much you want to focus on the number of subscribers.
I think it's fine to focus on doing the best content rather than too many "hacks" for getting people to signup (yes, even though we're on IndieHackers, haha).
My newsletter experience so far, personal and when discussing with others can be summarised like this: Subscribers are easy, readers are hard.
It's much easier than some people make it to get someone to submit their email on your website. What is difficult is getting the right people to give you their email, the people that will actually care about what you have to say.
You're definitely doing a great job! And for what it's worth, I think you're miles more useful than HubSpot already, haha.

That's really amazing. Keep it up. I have a product that your subscribers will love. I'm doing only Private promos. Would you be open to discuss that?

feel free to share it @ harrydry1996@gmail.com
but I don't promote anything to the newsletter (other than the 1 sponsored slot which is filled for the foreseeable future)

I see I thought you sometimes do a review of the products you think will help your audience and you use in general. Will message you now. Thanks for the quick response

Hey Simon. Thank you!
I asked them. Nice to get the band back together.

I started my channel last week and made my first video.
I promoted it on my Twitter page, to my newsletter, Reddit, and good ol' Indie Hackers, and ended up with 5.7k views and 1000 new subscribers.
It's an interesting case study in how tough it is to move audiences across platforms. I have 40k Twitter followers, 23k newsletter subscribers and 1k decided to subscribe to the YouTube channel.
My rational behind starting YouTube is all about organic search. I have over fifty high quality written on the Marketing Examples website!
But they're all super short. And not picking up much organic traffic on Google. It's hard for me to compete with big companies, who are writing SEO optimised stuff, with a team of link-builders.
But on YouTube it's more of a level playing field. And the numbers are just as big for the same keywords.
Also, I love the platform myself, and only see it getting bigger and bigger!
Anyway, I'll keep you updated with how it goes.
Viva Marketing Examples!
If you'd like to check out my channel or my first video I've linked em. Any questions or YouTube advice from seasoned pros — hit me :)

Hey Harry, Congrats on the milestone. I've been a big fan of your newsletter and site. I usually circulate your newsletter because there is some nugget of wisdom I want either our creatives or copywriters or marketing department to know.
After I read you last newsletter on your YT channel I was excited because I run a YT analytics company (videoamigo.com) I wanted to know what you kinda touched on - Can you leverage your audience to get that initial velocity? It looks like you did. Congrats!
You are right about YT as a platform that is underutilized. You have a great niche, and I predict you will hit 10k subscribers in no time. Since videoamigo is completely free, I hope you find it useful to grow your channel. I hope this doesn't come off as shameless plug but I figured since this is on-topic I might as well share. :)

Great to hear you've found a marketing channel you love. It sounds like you've got passion for it. 🙌
Congrats on your success so far. 🙌 -

Awesome stuff Harry. Been following since June 2019.
You’re doing great at paving your own path. Cheers! -

Not surprising given how good your first video was!
I've seen similar in regards with SEO on my own projects - even with great content, it can be hard to reach people.

Love your marketing examples newsletter

The first video is really great mate - didn't expect your voice to sound so cool ngl hahaha
How are you going to take this further? Whats your end goal?
-

Hi Harry Dry,
Good to see you already have 1000 subscribers on your channel. Congratulations!
Can I know the content you are publishing on your youtube channel?
Do you make videos based on the trending keywords?
You have mentioned that you like to keep your content small on youtube. How effective is it?-
1
No videos on trending keywords, nope. Early days to tell how successful YouTube will be.
This video is picking up around 40 / day organically. From YouTube “recommended’ and stuff like that. So a fairly positive early sign.
-
1
It is for sure a positive sign. You mentioned YouTube "recommended". How does YouTube select these videos as recommended? Based on the number of views? or Based on Content?
-
-
-
1
1k subscribers after just one video? that's a great result even considering your following numbers on other channels ;)

Cheers Kacper! Was a complete unknown. I got no complaints

Hello Hello!
My marketing newsletter hit 21,000 subscribers!
It’s been a long road. But, a straight road. I found a formula. And stuck to it. Write. Promote. Write. Promote. Write. Promote.
I remember Indie Hackers put on a group chat with James Clear last year. He was on 200k subscribers. That number sounded absurd to me. I asked him how he did it. He told me he'd written two articles a week for 5 years.
I realise that I keep doing what I'm doing I'll be on around 200k subscribers after 5 years ...
50% of any success is down to consistency.
My newsletter is my content marketing
If i tried to do content marketing and write a newsletter both would be half as good.
So I work really hard on one article. Try and make it awesome. And then it doubles as my content marketing.
50 hardcore fans and you're rolling
Thousands of articles get published each day:
* 95% barely get read
- 4% do well
- 1% take off
If you've got 50 hardcore fans you can get in that 4% category EVERY time. Cause they'll share your article. And talk about it.
You earn them by going BIG. Writing something so good you can’t get ignore you. Also, by interacting. Taking people on your journey with you.
Thank you for reading. If you'd like to check out my newsletter it's here. Any questions let me know. I'll be back at 25,000!

Congrats Harry! I've learned a lot from you in the past month since I found out about you and I've been following your approach closely. You're my distant learning instructor except that you don't know it 😂
By the way, your writing tips on twitter are gold.
Three questions:
-How did you get your first 50 hardcore fans?
-Do you have one steady platform to engage with users or do you use multiple channels? I feel like engaging through multiple channels is a whole job by itself.
-How did you grow your twitter following? I recently started on Twitter and I've read all kinds of things like comment on a famous person's tweets, retweet others, like a lot of tweets, etc. But these things don't seem to have made any difference for me.Thanks again!
-
2
cheers.
-
people followed me after i wrote this story about a dating app i built for Kanye West fans. around 50 followed marketing examples cause of it. slowly but surely turned into fans. one on one email helps with that.
-
i engage everywhere i post. twitter / reddit / IH / email / fb groups
-
you need to be able to answer the question, “why should someone follow me” . Then consistently create content that supports that why. Also make online friends. your first 100 followers can just be 50 Indie Hackers ... there's always threads about boosting each others twitter flying round
-
2
Just read the Kanye story. You are one helluva guy!
But more than that you are a master at storytelling.
Thanks again for all the tips!
-

Big thumbs up, Harry. You've been killing it while remaining transparent, trustworthy, and helpful in the process. Can't wait to see where you end up in a year from now.
Keep it up! 👍

I subscribed today. Wondering if I'm the 21,000th 😅
Congratulations though! For the effort you put in, that number probably lacks a 0 (or 2 or more may be).

Keep up the great work Harry! Your content is very useful, well done! I have a quick question if you don't mind: What tools do you use to create your infographics with all the highlighted text/examples and side-by-side bad/good examples?
-

I'm one of the 21.000 HAPPY subscribers with 100% open rate from your newsletters! Keep it up!

Congratulations, Harry! 🎉 That’s absolutely stunning growth for a year!
Marketing Examples is hands down one of my favorite online marketing resources. I don’t regularly read many newsletters I’m subscribed to, but I think I’ve read just about all of your emails. Love how direct and actionable your tips are.
Still need to implement a ton of them, but I’m just grateful that your newsletter is forcing me to repeatedly think about marketing strategy.
Keep up the awesome work!

Congratulations Harry! You do write great, concise content.
You're also a legend on Twitter, so well deserved : )

Glad your enjoying it Craig!
-
Friends, enemies!
I bring good news and bad.
I'll start with the good.
The Marketing Examples Twitter account is bouncing. Averaging about 4500 followers each month.
Twitter compounds. My first 5000 on Twitter took 10 months. Now I’ve added that in a month. If you're doing good stuff keep doing it.
Twitter doesn’t pay bills. It’s potential energy.
So, the not so good news. My last sponsor decided to call it a day. Spending was cut as a result of COVID-19. It is what it is.
I’m not down. I’m actually up. Sponsors aren’t the yellow brick road. It’s a good time to focus on monetising myself. A blessing in disguise.
No need for pity - “Sorry to hear...” You can’t go swimming and not get wet. If I'm any good I'll work it out.
Without a sponsor I’ve teamed up with Exploding topics. We're sponsoring each other for a few weeks. So not all bad. Subscriber growth has been doing good as a result.

I'm waiting for you to launch a ($10 per month) membership subscription and I'll be your customer for life. :)
-
4
What would you like to see in this subscription? Same question for @petecodes, @dreworos, @graeme - flattered you're keen
I asked specifically about a premium community on this Indie Hackers post. @csallen replied “I call the "kitchen sink" model. It's just relatively messy and unfocused, as you're doing so many different things, and it ends up being tough to identify what the real value is.”
I joined a bunch of premium communities to see just how messy it is. Some are making good money. But awesome takes a lot of work.
The one thing I don't think I could make premium is articles and tips. If I do that growth slows right down ...
-
3
I would def buy an ebook - like refactoring ui but for marketing! Or starting simpler, just the twitter threads and blog packaged up with a structure!
I wouldn't join any paid community, sick of em
-
2
I think you could replicate someone like Pat Walls and have extra content for paid subscribers.
Do one article for free and one paid per week. That way you still have growth and you have MRR.
I don't see the problem in you doing case studies for how you've helped other companies by the way! You could get them to pay you to do that and they get more publicity.

Losing a sponsor sucks! But it can also be a good opportunity to push yourself out of your comfort zone and start thinking about new ways to monetize ME. I’m sure in a few years you will see this as a turning point!
-

I agree. Sucks only if I let it suck. 100 bonus subs from Exploding topics yesterday.
If they movin' shaky, we'll just do this shit ourselves, whoa

"If I'm any good I'll work it out." Love your enthusiasm. Its a joy seeing you grow for the last couple of months..

Nice growth on your Twitter profile! And nice job on your website Harry! Been visiting it a lot lately. Somehow I'm not finding all the juicy stuff on the website that you're sharing on okdork's FB group and on Twitter. That might be me though? :)
If you factor your Marketing Examples into an ebook you can sell them for $$ on Twitter.
You probably know Gumroad. A lot of people are making things and selling it on Twitter through Gumroad. I would definitely spend some time creating a great ebook. Create a tweet about it and pin the tweet to your Twitter timeline and watch some nice cash coming in. You could probably make a living with that already with 30k followers. (I've seen people with less than 10k followers do it).
-
2
Sorry to hear about the sponsor, but amazing growth on twitter.
I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your writing style 👏

Hey @harrydry good job man. I receive your newsletters and always check (most of the time :) .... Love the quality of the content and even your website was awesome last time I checked.
I saw some comments about monetization where people mention e-books. I second that opinion. I think that should be an easy win for you. I suggest collating your best examples into a 'top 20', Or top 'something' type of thing and putting it up! -

Good to hear Harry that you keep doing what you like!
I love the project, I told you many times!
Love what you do!

This sounds like a huge opportunity to monetize Marketing Examples more sustainably.
I'm sure you've thought a lot about this, but here's my recommendation: keep doing what you're doing (writing quality articles and releasing them for free). But also introduce a subscription membership for people who want to get even more out of ME - access to a community, additional articles, etc.
I'm very curious to see how it goes for you and what path you end up taking! Best of luck.
-
1
Thanks for the detailed idea Richard! I think something like that might work well actually. Appreciate the support

Wow that's 30.3k now.
Just an idea. Productise yourself. I'm sure you can make a lot of money in a week by setting up Calendly for companies wanting to do marketing for 1000-5000 bucks a pop than you did with Sponsors. Companies have big marketing budgets.
You've also got 2 big proofs: The Kanye West Story & Marketing Examples.
That alone should get you lots of customers & later you can figure out monetization models for Marketing Examples itself.
-
1
Interesting thought Akshay :)
-
1
Erm. Isn't that just becoming a consultant? It might be ok short term, but the best businesses have a revenue model which isn't directly correlated to the number of hours put in. Agencies and consultancies are painful!
-
1
True. That's why I suggested it as an alternative till he figures out the right business model.

don't stress, you will ace it.

Well in that case, not sorry to hear that!
And wow amazing work there! Great job with the twitter account and congratulations are due too! :)

Have you thought about doing a membership site? I reckon an extra article a week would definitely be worth $10/m for lots of people.

Creativity should be indebted to constraint :)
Ladies and Gentlemen, the day has come.

Google has accepted, that when people Google “Marketing Examples”, they don't want a big “knowledge box” full of stocking-fillers from “Marketing Land”. They want the good stuff, the fine wine, the dulcet tones, from Marketing Examples!
In all seriousness, “MarketingExamples . com” is what's known as an exact matching domain name: people search for “marketing examples” organically. And it's also my domain.
Back in the day this was a smart way of getting free organic traffic.
e.g. you could make a domain “highqualitywatches . com” and rank for the valuable search term “high quality watches”. But then Google's algo changed, and it became much harder to “game” the exact matching domain loophole.
In my case, the road to No.1 took about 10 months:

It came in two stages:
Stage 1 - Get enough high quality backlinks that Google ranks me in the top 5
Stage 2 - Then it's all about “searcher intent”. Whatever search result people are clicking on more than proportionally Google's going to bump up the rankings.
Fortunately, enough people Googling “marketing examples” where searching for my site that Google had to move it up to numero uno.

It's not actually the biggest deal because the keyword “Marketing Examples” hasn't got the biggest search volume.
But now at least I won't have the awkward exchange when I tell people what I do, they Google it, and they can't see it anywhere!

Ok, after this I don't have anything left to teach you about SEO 😂
-
3
Haha - tbf you called it pretty much exactly how it happened when we spoke about it.
Also, you told me to not worry so much about this page and that organic traffic was far more important from other pages (which has proved to be very true). Somehow I rank No.1 for “Tesla's marketing strategy.”
-
-

How do you got the high quality backlinks?

2
Great project, I follow it since the beginning :) Congrats to your achievement.
Btw, do you do any keyword research for your marketing tips? Where are you looking for inspiration?-
5
my focus is more on organic sharing than organic traffic. So the number one goal is to make the article as good as possible. This means I write about what interests me and don't do too much research.
Having said that keyword research is a big deal. I get nearly 200 visits a day from organic traffic atm and should possibly focus more on SEO style articles
-
-
1
I love your work, the site, twitter account, everything is well done.
-
1
Congratulations, well deserved! ❤
Isn't the page title a bit too simple? I search for "marketing examples", the website is "marketingexamples.com" and title is "Marketing Examples". I am not talking about the SEO effect, but I would expect more information in the title so I know what I'm clicking on, I expected something like "Marketing Examples - A curated list of best marketing campaigns".

@harrydry Congrats! I know the feeling of getting #1 on Google for a decent keyword - makes you feel like the top dog :)
Any method you used in particular to get the HQ backlinks other than cold outreach offering guest post/custom advice/etc?
I'm assuming you scraped the backlinks of the top competitors?
-
2
cheers lewsis - all very good ideas lewis, but i actually didn't do too much.
I've been open to backlink exchange. I'm in a few seo fb + slack groups and had a few come through there ... And I've wrote a few guest blogs as you said. But nothing more than that.
tbh ... it sounds a bit corny, but i try and let my content do the talking. I'm fortunate that people read my stuff, so I prefer to spend a week writing a sick article and hopefully picking up some good links organically. I think i spent a few days grinding with cold emails and not making much progress.

Any tips for me? I have a book on Quora Marketing named Quorific. It is now on No 1.
But dont have much searches. Any tips to increase those branded searches??

Thank you.
Unfortunately, there's not much you can do increase branded searches other than keep grinding and build your own sites brand up. Good search term to rank well for. Good luck :)

Marketing Examples email list just hit the 13,000 mark. Here's the last 30 days growth. And a couple of highlights:

Negative subscribers
A week ago I went backwards in subscribers for the first time. 50 unsubscribes. Just 25 new subscribes. A net loss.
Setbacks are opportunities. I learnt that people find long emails daunting ...
Encourage forwarding to balance unsubscribes
My unsubscribe rate is between 0.2-0.4% per email. With a list of 13k this is ~40 people.
To balance unsubscribes I encourage subscribers to forward to friends. If you write great email's good this works:

Quality gets rewarded
The focus of Marketing Examples has always been quality at all costs. The downside is fewer articles and less organic traffic.
But the upside is if you have a reputation for quality you expose yourself to big growth spikes.
e.g. - A fortnight ago Noah Kagan shared my site with his big email list. This doesn't happen to sites which prioritise quantity over quality. A tweet from Courtland comes to mind:

Just get started
if you want to grow an email list just get started is the best advice out there.
Email lists don't “blow up” in the way that YouTube channels do. It's a slow game and it can feel like you're plodding on. But if you plod on long enough you'll make it to several thousand subscribers.
And finally, if you'd like to learn more about marketing from short pratical tips, please do check out Marketing Examples and also perhaps the email list.
Any questions let me know in the comments :)

Hey Harry, great job with the newsletter and congrats on the the huge milestone!
I'm curious if you're able to make a living from sponsorships or if you have multiple income streams? Roughly speaking, it might help folks correlate followership with income potential. Thanks!

I really enjoy your work @harrydry I'm excited to see where Marketing Examples goes in the future

Hey Harry! Thanks for this, I'm planning to soft-launch an app of my own, it's related to e-commerce, I am just looking forward to launching it from my home so keeping that in mind how do you think I should approach with 0 marketing budget, maybe if you have any tips it'll be much appreciated. I'm also new to IH, just been a few days, so I might be missing something on IH itself? Also..followed!
-
1
That's a really really broad question. I don't really know where to begin. Depends on your price point. My first steps might be sharing it on Indie Hackers / with your target audience in a very low key way and seeing what people say ...
And then when you come to launch you might have a few fans willing to propel you.
Also, I don't really believe in big launches. Don't put too much stock on them. And Product Hunt is definately a good idea at some point. But worth getting some fans before then ...
-
1
oh okay, yes that's really helpful I would love to get to know more as I go along this process.
-
-
-
1
Congrats, Harry! Do you know where the unsubscribes came from? And totally agree newsletters are a slow game. But it's a ton of fun :)
-

Thank you Irma. And just people from my email list. Don't know specifically any more

What software are you using to track the follower counts in that first screenshot?

That's email subscribers not followers. And I use Email Octopus. To track followers would advise Social Blade.

A couple of days ago I published my most successful marketing article ever. It was about the genius of Lil Nas X marketing strategy.
The twitter thread ended up with more than 7000 likes. It also ended up the 3rd most upvoted post of all time on Reddit's entrepreneur forum.
I was at my parents house when I published the article. We were in the kitchen looking at the numbers go up literally every second. It was surreal. This was the 46th marketing case study I've written. Lucky 46!
Before, I went to bed I checked my phone one last time. Boy, was that mistake. A stream of angry messages stared back at me. It took me a while to work out what was going on.
Basically, another Twitter user had written a thread about the same topic a few months earlier. She'd then seem my thread, thought I'd stolen her work, and proceeded to set the attack dogs on me.

In reality:
- I'd never seen her thread before
- Hundreds of articles have been written about Lil Nas X's meteoric rise before. She wasn't the first. I won't be the last.
- You can't own the rights to a story. That's like saying that only one article can ever be written about Tesla's marketing!
But that's not how “the mob” operates. It takes 5 seconds to reply, “You stole the article ...” And 5 minutes to read both threads and realise that aside from the title, they tell the story in a very different way.
I thought about blocking them, I thought about direct messaging them, I thought about replying with reason. But, you cannot change an opinion using logic if logic wasn't used to form the opinion in the first place. Anything I said would fuel them. So I went with the radio silence approach.
I thought maybe it would slow, but I woke up the next day and the stream of hate kept coming. They even messaged my sponsor trying to to get them to cut ties:

Fortunately my sponsor saw sense. Cheers SEOBuddy:

Enough was enough. I left my phone in the cookie jar, went outside into the sunlight, then into a nearby park. I said hello to a few dog walkers, they smiled, said hello back and I was reminded that humans are alright after all.
It's a 24 hour news cycle. They'd done their best to cancel me, and now I'm sure they've moved onto their next next victim.
When all said and done, worse things have happened at sea. Social media isn't real. I've started to smile about the whole thing. It toughened me up.
“The dogs bark, and the caravan goes by” — Jose Mourinho
(thanks @Arsawatt for the quote)
Viva Marketing Examples. Only way to take me out is to nail me to canvas! Cause the party isn't stopping. Thanks for reading. And enjoy Friday.

This was annoying to see, especially since your thread was completely different than hers. I can't imagine anyone who actually read them concluding that yours was stolen.
Anyway, you've been crushing it on Twitter. Onwards!
-
1
"I can't imagine anyone who actually read them concluding that yours was stolen." - I think it's very interesting phenomena which can be used somehow? What do you think was the driving force for was folks? I've scroll the thread and there are plenty of people who where trying to "restore justice". It looks like pre-existing strong dissatisfaction were just relieve that way. And because relief was the motivation, there were no reasons to read actual threads not to try think logically. Does anyone know a good materials to read more about it?
-

In my opinion: Most people walk around with a political axe to grind, so when they see an opportunity, they're eager to start grinding it. Combine that with basic human tendencies toward laziness (it's easier to read a headline than an article), groupishness (we tend to blindly trust what other people like us are a saying), and moralizing (our impulse to publicly shame those we deem rule-breakers), and you get Twitter mobs.
-

Cheers Courtland. Onwards indeed

Yeah, I guess online harassment is okay if done to white people, because some white people used to do slavery. Is black on black harassment allowed, because black people also owned slaves? Get a grip, dude. He's nitpicking the only part that enables her to do this. If it was anyone else doing this cyberbullying, they would be called out.

See now you’re just putting words in my mouth and diverging from my point into me supposedly approving that woman’s behaviour or her point.
All I said tread carefully when mocking even a mere idea of cultural appropriation in any way, shape or form.

Just remember what Ricky Gervais said:
"Trolls don't hate you. They hate themselves. They're in pain & you getting upset is like their morphine. Don't administer. Enjoy the screams."
Keep up the good work Harry, you're helping a lot of people.

Insane sense of entitlement. How selfish does one have to be to create a campaign for such a ridiculously inappropriate reason.
Her tweet and behavior isn't surprising at all, this woman has no shame.
-

i saw this. and actually i was planning a big write up on my own blog. Then I saw she'd been involved in a car accident. I didn't know the severity. So I laid off publishing and wrote it here instead. Didn't want to provoke someone “frail” and I could just see it going south.
In hindsight maybe I should have went harder for it. Judging by the IH reception the story could have taken off, but live and let live.

So Mourinho stole the quote!
Let me tweet him quickly-

There's a misconception that Cervantes coined this phrase but some say it was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and some say it comes from the Middle East. So there's no certain origin of it.
-

I love this quote. Jose Mourinho said a variant of it, once in a press conference and I'll never forget it.
Just editing the post to add it. Don't tweet me for stealing it.

It’s an expression from Arabic origin also used in French. Don’t worry you’re safe 😉

I loved this:
"I left my phone in the cookie jar, went outside into the sunlight, then into a nearby park. I said hello to a few dog walkers, they smiled, said hello back and I was reminded that humans are alright after all."
Probably something we should all do more often

I hope the positives far outweighed the negatives!

For every person who throws hate at you, there are thousands who wait for your case studies. I literally light up when a see a notification on my phone. Never been so eager to open my mail. Your storytelling is very engaging. Keep doing what you're doing mate.

Thank you. That's really cool. Glad you like them :)

The viral thing is absolutely bonkers. I went viral a couple of years ago for some political tweets, and the whole experience was surreal and kind of scary. The dopamine hit I got from seeing the numbers roll in is the closest thing I've experienced to drugs without actually doing drugs. And then there's the absolutely insane corners of the internet you get exposed to as a side-effect. People pick things up, inject their own context and slide what you're saying into their own narrative and story. All of sudden you're sucked in, invested emotionally in something you were nearly none the wiser to.
I don't think there's any better way to handle it than to put your phone down and do something else. As soon as you put your phone down you realize that to some extent all of this is virtual, an invented, constructed reality that we make a choice to participate in, and let it affect our emotional emotional state in the real world. I think the Matrix is an often overused metaphor, but it feels super fucking real in this context. It's incredibly visceral and powerful to be in the middle of it.
The silver lining is the people who crusade on these instances of invented virtual outrage typically move on to something else fairly quickly, and it all goes away. It is very much, as you said, the 24 hour news cycle.
Love what you put out into the world @harrydry, keep it up dude 👊

"Enough was enough. I left my phone in the cookie jar, went outside into the sunlight, then into a nearby park. I said hello to a few dog walkers, they smiled, said hello back and I was reminded that humans are alright after all."
This is just the best part. It's just hard getting your mind of it.

An "influencer" with 4.5K followers? Total joke. Hope you clicked on the 'report for racism' button before moving on!

Haters gonna hate Harry.
I remember seeing some of their comments when it happened, like "you literally copy and pasted this from NotLaja". I checked both threads and was very confused. There was absolutely nothing copied.
Forget them bro. Onwards and upwards for you 😎

Thank you man - keep smashing OneUp. MRR is inspiring!

I'm sorry this happened to you @harrydry :( People really suck sometimes and I'm glad you found a way to not let it get to you too much. Kudos to SEOBuddy for backing you up!

Hope to see another article about the aftermath of an angry mob (even if it was unjustified) with some insights on the acquisitions, traffic conversion. A question that comes to mind a lot when people say “there is no bad publicity” is how much traffic from these situations converts in comparison to another article of yours with no hate comments on it.

Dude, this is nuts. Thanks for sharing the experience, I’m very impressed with how you dealt with it. People need to be careful what they say, not everyone would have taken it so well. Cookie jars at the ready people! 🍪

Ugh, cancel culture.
FWIW, saw the tweet thread in question in an email from Noah Kagan the other day, awesome job!

"Worse things have happened at sea" So true.
We have had our fair share of angry mobs too and it can be really painful. I just wish I was as cool and calm as you Harry. Keep up the content game, really love it!

yes i knew about it but the point is your well knowledge article that you written in the details it will help me a lot bcz i am working on the same project you can see here https://paintartdiamonds.com/

It takes way more time to make something then it does to tear it down. I'm glad you didn't let it rattle you. For context somebody thought they invented totchos (nacho tots) and accused Sonic of stealing the idea and implementing it all within a month, like they can move that fast lol

Hi Harry,
I'm a subscriber to Marketing Examples, and I read that article, and thought it was great!
Sorry you had to deal with this. Thanks for sharing the experience. Keep up the good work!

I experienced the same. My tweet was on a much smaller topic but got pickup by some SJW and ended up being an attack on the fact that I'm also a white male. Apparently the fact that making gender and skin colour a "guilt" is racism as well, don't faze these people.
I ended up changing my twitter to something more generic than my picture and creating another twitter account for when I comment on things that are "touchy" but... honestly, I'm using twitter less and less thanks to this kind of behaviour.

I got @'d and DM's from their trolls, saying that you had stolen the content ( I RT'd).
The good news is, you didnt.
The best news is, your content is solid, your track record is great, and any publicity is good publicity (and HEY! it was free!) -

This is exactly the kind of visceral response you’d want anyways. Fabulous work.

Someone could launch Angry Mob as a Service (AMaaS)
🤷♂️ So Harry could fire back whilst blissfully wandering around at the dog park 🐕 🌳

A Twitter mob attacked?!?!?!?!?
I have been on the receiving end of at least 2 such attacks. Message me if you need to vent or a sympathetic ear.

Well done Harry. The knuckle draggers walk out of the house every day waiting to be triggered. Useless dregs of society.

But, you cannot change an opinion using logic if logic wasn't used to form the opinion in the first place.

Overall, a net win for you. Your post is now a lot more popular and I am sure got a lot more hits.

You have my full support @harrydry. The haters will unfortunately always be more vocal on the Internet than the vast majority of people who may not say anything, but actually do support and appreciate the work that you do.

Hey dude, all I can say is it comes with the territory. EVERY time I get a successful article on Reddit, the haters comes thick and fast.
I can't believe they tried to derail your sponsorship!? Nuts.
My policy is to just ignore. Don't give them oxygen.
Here's another way to put it... when people used to diss Jay Z - it was known that Jay Z was 'too big to respond' : )
You have to take this approach, otherwise you'll burn up precious time and headspace on the haters. You don't want that.
Keep doing what you're doing @harrydry

Half of the angry tweets look like they are posted by bots to be honest. Why would they even bring race into discussion? It's like the time when the Twitter AI bot was stopped because it started to become racist and nazist.
I don't know what the best solution is to this, there are crazy/angry people in the world, I think once you got their attention it's hard to stop them, you can't really reason with them and ignoring them might be a double-edged sword.
-
1
Fascinating. And yes. I agree. The best way to deal with Twitter-poop is to put up your umbrella and ignore it. However, had your Sponsor been intimidated then they'd have done some serious damage. And in that sense, it's an evil that we call could do without. But Twitter Mobs are like a force of nature at this point. You can't stop them. All you can do is bundle up and brace yourself for storm. Fortunately for you, this storm blew over quickly because your sponsor is a human being, not a cog.

Twitter is a cesspool and I don't think anyone has actually been canceled by a twitter mob because everyone sorta just knows how dumb it is. Sorry that happened to you.

There's nothing worse than people who make inaccurate accusations about people publicly without even knowing the truth.
You should sue her for slander, stress, emotional suffering/distress just to teach her a lesson. It's not the best use of one's time or energy, but there must be some way to force people to think twice before posting BS.
-
1
Oh man I wouldn't know what to do in that situation. Glad you went silence - it's try ANYTHING you said would've added fuel for them.
-

Hey Harry, so sorry to read what happened to you. The mob is awful. You are doing great work. You won't be canceled. Keep it up!

Good call to stay quiet I bet. It always seems like the end-of-the-world in a PR crisis like this one, a lot of the time it turns out that it passes quickly.
-

I think I agree. Didn't want to Prince Andrew it.
But I also think not clearing anything up had problems as well. Perhaps if I tried to explain myself, they'd have eased up. We'll never know.

I think we're more on the same page than you think.
Social media has affected my life in a way. It's a massive source of traffic to my website.
But we're shaved chimps on a blue ball spinning around a larger ball of fire. Social media is made up. It isn't real life. Hunting elk is real life.

Incredible man, fully deserved. When I clicked on the IH post I was expecting just to upvote and move on, but was impressed by the effort put into creating the images and explaining how you got there. You certainly practice what you preach. It's been an absolute pleasure to host you on 2 podcasts so far, and it's been fun to see your journey since then.
James! Lovely words. Thank you. Look forward to catching up IRL. Both podcasts were a pleasure
love the diagram -- I think your point that value is created on via engagement on forums, and then summarized via articles, is both right, and also misunderstood by a lot of people who write online in a 'long-form first' mode. (me included)
Hey @harrydry, I just wanted to let you know I think you are a genius.
Your before and afters on copy writing are amazing. You are the go to guy for landing page conversions.
PS: Nice work guessing the FAST conversion example, I thought for sure it was going to be 25% better conversion rate one. Clearly I no nothing. haha
@harrydry I have a selfish question for you (combined with a bribe).
Will you take a peak at HelloMedian.com and do a before and after? Please?
In return, I would gladly give you free access to the software for life. 😁
Let me know if we can make that happen.
Cheers,
Spencer Scott
Thank you for the insight and also for the awesome content in your newsletter! 👏
shit is just getting started! man, so encouraging!
There is so much to learn from just your journey, let alone the actual marketing content you’re putting out! Inspires me to do the same.
And you’ll hit the 50k mark by dec. I have no doubt. All the best!
Really love how you simplify things before you put it out. I’m curious
I ask because I feel I haven’t read / seen a single piece of content that isn’t 10/10 from you. Does that come with expertise you think or just doing the research well before hitting publish? Thanks!!
@harrydry - Where does Zest come into the equation for you?
Well done Harry! Well deserved, your content is engaging and at a consistent high-level. What do you use for your visuals?
