August 6, 2025 💡 Let’s Talk Conversion: What Helped Me Turn More Installs Into Real Users

Hey IH friends 👋

I’ve been working on StressLess, a gamified mental health app that helps users track stress, reflect, and grow a little cat companion as they improve.
After some solid traction — including a top 10 ranking in a few countries — I hit a wall many of you probably know:

👉 High installs, low conversion.

People were downloading the app… but dropping off before actually using it.

🔄 The Fix: I Rebuilt the Onboarding

Here’s what I changed:

Simplified first steps – no more long intros or explanations
Instant interaction – users log their mood on the first screen
Feedback first – cat reacts immediately to their emotion
Gated login – moved signup after users experience real value

It’s early, but the difference has been noticeable:
More sessions. More users completing their first flow. More reviews. And — most exciting — more people upgrading to the paid tier.

🤔 Now I'm Thinking Freemium & Login-Free

As a next step, I’m seriously considering:

  • Removing mandatory login altogether (privacy-first, friction-free)

  • Making the core app free and locking bonus features with a freemium model

StressLess is meant to reduce anxiety — not add steps or pressure.
And the goal is impact first, revenue second (but ideally both 💪).

💬 I’d love your thoughts:

  • Have you tried login-free onboarding? Did it help your activation/conversion?

  • What’s worked best for you when transitioning from paid → freemium?

This lines up with what I’d expect for consumer health apps. The user is usually in a specific emotional moment, so every account screen before the first “oh, this helps” moment costs a lot.

I’m testing this with MetricSync (https://metricsync.download) and I’d lean login-free until the user has completed one meaningful action. For StressLess, that probably means: log mood → see the cat react → get one tiny reflection prompt → then ask for signup only if they want history/sync.

Freemium-wise, I’d keep the daily loop free and charge for depth: streak insights, expanded reflections, themes, backup/sync, or richer progress views. Charging before the habit forms feels risky.

  2. 1

Nice rebuild. Try login free by default, then ask to Save progress after the second mood log or a two day streak with Continue offline, Apple, or Google. It keeps the first run calm and converts only engaged users. Track second log rate and day two return.

    1. 1

Thanks a lot for this suggestion! 🙏 I really like the idea of making the first run completely frictionless, then asking for signup only once the user is engaged (second log or streak). It makes sense—keeping the first experience calm is super aligned with the app’s goal. I’ll definitely look into tracking the second log rate and day two return, that could give me really valuable insights.

      1. 1

Happy to help! One tiny experiment to try next: after the second log, use a calm one-line prompt like "Save progress to keep your streak if you switch phones?" with Continue offline, Apple, and Google, and show it only once per session :)

btw we could partner up. Me and my team are building HustleAdvisor, a social network where entrepreneurs share practical step by step lessons. If you join the waitlist and later post a short write up about building StressLess, we will boost it in the main feed so more people see it :)

July 20, 2025 🛠️ I just launched the public roadmap for StressLess, help me decide what to build next!

Hey Indie Hackers 👋

When I started working on StressLess, I was deep in burnout. I didn’t build it to “launch an app”, I built it to help myself breathe, reflect, and just feel okay again.

Fast forward a few months:

  • It’s now live on iOS and Android

  • We hit the Top 10 in Health & Wellness in several countries

  • And I’ve received messages from users saying the app genuinely helped them feel better

That’s honestly the best part. 💛

🚀 What’s next?

Now that StressLess is growing, I don’t want to build in a vacuum.
So today, I’m opening up the public roadmap to give the community a real voice:

✅ Submit your own feature ideas
✅ Upvote what matters most to you
✅ Track what’s coming next

🗺️ Check it out here:

💬 How you can help:

If you’ve tried the app or just believe in making mental health more human and more fun, I’d love your input:

  • What features would make StressLess more helpful?

  • What kind of rewards, experiences, or feedback loops feel motivating, not stressful?

  • Any integration ideas or content formats you'd love to see?

I’m building this solo, but not alone, because of you.

Let’s grow this little space of calm together 🐱✨

July 3, 2025 🚀 150 users overnight — no ads, no influencers, just Reddit + the right offer

I’ve been quietly building a mental health app called StressLess for the past few months — solo, bootstrapped, and full of heart.

This week, I hit a new milestone: 150 new users in one night.

Here’s exactly what worked 👇

🛠 The strategy (zero ads, 100% organic):

1. Find the right subreddit
I used a small internal tool I built to discover active, relevant subreddits based on keywords, post volume, and tone. (If you’re interested in the tool, I might release it!)

2. Offer your app for free — but only briefly
I made StressLess free for 2 days only, with lifetime access via promo code. No bait-and-switch, just transparency.

3. Be present, offer support
I replied to every comment, answered questions, and followed up with people who tried the app. It wasn't about selling — it was about connecting.

🔁 Now what?

  • Asking users to leave reviews → already seeing improvement in ASO and category ranking

  • Will iterate based on user feedback

  • Gearing up to test this same strategy for Android now

💬 Curious:

  • Have you tried free offers to gain momentum? What worked?

  • Would a subreddit discovery tool be useful to you?

Let’s keep helping each other grow — the indie way 💛
Happy to share what I’ve learned if you’re about to launch.

July 1, 2025 🐱 Big milestone: StressLess is now live on Android and I got my first monthly subscriber!

I started building StressLess during one of the most stressful moments of my life — burnout, anxiety, and that feeling of being stuck.

It began as a tiny self-care app for me.
Today, it’s helping others too — and that feels surreal.

🚨 What just happened:

  • ✅ Launched on Android 🎉

  • ✅ Got my first monthly paying user on the Play Store

  • ✅ Slowly turning my side project into a tiny, sustainable business

StressLess is a soft place to land.
Track your stress. Grow a little cat. Feel a bit better each day.

I’m still solo-building, still learning, still excited for every little step.
Growth is slow — but it’s real.

Next up: community rewards, campaigns, and hopefully… more users finding peace.

June 26, 2025 The Growth Strategy That Helped My App Hit the Top 10 in Health & Wellness

Hey Indie Hackers 👋

After burning out hard last year, I started building a mental health app, mostly for myself. I never expected it to get traction. But earlier this month, StressLess hit the Top 10 Paid Apps in Health & Fitness in my region.

Here’s the growth strategy that worked for me (inspired by other indie devs):

🔧 Step-by-step:

  1. Ratings Prompt — I ask for a review after users complete their first de-stress session. Timing really matters here.

  2. ASO Optimization — Titles, subtitles, keywords, and visual assets got a full pass. I treated my app store page like a landing page.

  3. Lifetime Offer (FREE) — For just 2 days, I made the lifetime upgrade 100% free.

  4. Promotion — I submitted the promo to AppAdvice and Indie App Santa to get visibility.

  5. Back to Paid — After 48 hours, the offer was removed, and the app went back to regular pricing.

📈 Result:

  • More downloads

  • Boosted ratings (with heartfelt reviews 💛)

  • Real users who stuck around

  • Enough momentum to feed word-of-mouth and Reddit reach

💬 Now I’d love to hear from you:

  • Have you tried limited-time promos? What worked?

  • Got other tips for indie apps in wellness/mental health?

  • Is this strategy sustainable or too risky for pricing reputation?

I checked out your app. To answer to your question: it should be a free app with premium features. People will not be willing to pay $2 for an app they know nothing about

    1. 2

Thanks a lot for checking it out and for the honest feedback! I totally get your point, charging upfront can be a barrier, especially without letting people try the app first.

The current pricing was mainly a way to test the market, but good news: the next version is coming this Monday, and I’ll be switching to a freemium model with free core features and optional premium ones. Appreciate your input it really helps shape the direction!

      1. 1

        No problem, best of luck!

  2. 1

    Good luck with your project

  3. 1

I don't think you have to worry about price reputation

    1. Mobile apps are priced very cheap to begin with

    2. You're starting out so you need the traction more than getting the optimal price.

      Just my opinion.

    1. 2

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I really appreciate it! You're right, especially in the early stages, traction matters more than perfect pricing. It’s helpful to hear that pricing reputation isn’t as big a concern at this point. Definitely gives me more confidence to experiment and learn along the way.

  4. 1

Incredible, congrats man keep working hard!

    1. 1

Thank you! I won’t rest until I hit #1 on the App Store 😄 One step at a time, but I’m all in!

  5. 1

Love the name and idea! We could all do with a bit less stress :)

Good call on asking for a review after the user first sees value.

How many users do you have now?

    1. 1

Thanks so much! 😊 That means a lot.
Yeah, I figured asking for a review only after delivering some value feels more natural and respectful to the user experience.
Right now, I’ve got around 10 paying users, it’s still early days, but I’m focusing on learning and growing step by step!

      Next step 100 🤞

  6. 1

It's not a golden rule, but since @Thomas understands the end-user perspective, the output reflects his approach.

    1. 1

Thanks a lot! 🙏 I really try to put myself in the user’s shoes as much as possible, so I’m glad that comes through. At the end of the day, building something that truly helps people is what matters most to me.

Thanks for this, I launched my fitness tracking app only yesterday, this article could definitely help me

    1. 1

You're welcome, and congrats on the launch! 🎉 Launching is a big step, wishing you lots of success with your fitness app. Glad the article could be helpful! Feel free to share how it goes or reach out if you ever want to exchange ideas.

  8. 1

    Good strategy!
Have you also promoted your App in other places? If so, how was your experience in those?

    1. 1

Yes, I’ve promoted the app on Instagram, TikTok, X, Product Hunt, and a few other platforms.

To be honest, I feel like these channels work best when you already have a community or following. That said, they’re still worth trying, sometimes a single post can really surprise you!

I’m still figuring out what works best for early-stage traction, but I’m sure these platforms will definitely help in the long run.

      1. 1

Yes, I also think here the key is the patience of the long run and being consistent... I'm in the same process now of starting to promote my website (Insightios) - starting without a community. I also make posts on Reddit and Quora with information insightful (I hope) for the public.

        1. 1

yes consistent is the key. Good luck with your project

June 19, 2025 🎯 What’s next for StressLess growth, features, and a little strategy shift 🐱✨

Hey Indie Hackers,

After hitting #10 in the French App Store (Paid – Health & Fitness), I took a step back to rethink the future of StressLess my mental wellness app that blends journaling, breathing exercises, and a cat companion to help people feel calmer, one day at a time.

It started as a tool for myself during burnout.
Now it's slowly turning into something others rely on and I want to make sure it can grow without burning out me, too.

Here’s what’s coming:

🚧 1. New Version Launching Soon

The next release will bring some important changes:

  • Bug fixes and UI polish

  • App review prompt (done softly, respectfully)

  • Reward system: Follow us on X/Instagram and earn little in-app bonuses (cosmetic or small motivational boosts)

  • Android version is on the way!
I started on iOS for simplicity, but the DMs and comments have made it clear: Android users want in 🟢📱

💸 2. A New Payment System

Right now the app is €1.99 once.
That’s… sustainable for coffee, not product development.

So I’m shifting to a subscription model:

  • Monthly and yearly options

  • Lifetime one-time still available

  • Will keep it affordable but make ongoing dev possible

Why the change?
Because meaningful apps need long-term care, not just downloads.
And I'd like to actually pay myself one day 🙃

📣 3. Upcoming Growth Experiments

I've been bootstrapping visibility with organic Reddit posts and small indie shoutouts.

Now:

  • Launching campaigns on IndieSanta and AppRaven

  • Testing the waters with micro-influencers in wellness + self-care

  • Exploring a homepage redesign for clarity + trust

Would love your feedback on what’s worked for you at this stage.

🤝 Let’s Chat, I Need Your Thoughts:

👉 Have you gone from one-time payment to subscriptions?
What made it work (or flop)?

👉 How do you reward social follows without feeling cheap?

👉 Any Android launch tips you wish you knew earlier?

StressLess started as a personal escape.
Now I want it to be a small companion for people who just need a moment to breathe. 💛

Thank you for all the support so far building in public with this community has kept me grounded.

Let’s keep creating software that feels like a hug, not a KPI.

June 11, 2025 🧠💬 Marketing win: I finally got reach and feedback... from a technical subreddit

Marketing has always felt like the uphill part of my indie journey.

I built an app called StressLess — it helps users manage stress through journaling, breathing, and a cute cat companion that grows as they do. 🐱

But no matter how much I improved the product, I wasn’t getting any traction. Launch posts, app tweets... crickets.

So, half out of curiosity, half out of burnout, I posted on a technical subreddit not even a business or mental health one.

📈 What happened?

  • 2.9K views

  • 15 thoughtful comments

  • And actual users signing up

😂 The best part?

It wasn’t some polished pitch. Just me sharing what I built and why.

No “growth hacking,” no fancy funnel.
Just honesty + the right community = signal.

💡 What I learned:

  • Don't underestimate developer empathy. Devs struggle with stress too.

  • Tech subreddits aren’t just for code — they’re full of humans.

  • The best “marketing” might just be showing your work with heart.

If you’ve ever had unexpected traction from a surprising place, I’d love to hear it. 🙌

June 6, 2025 🚨 We're officially in the Top 10 on the App Store!

Last night I saw something surreal:
StressLess — the little app I started building during burnout — hit #10 in the Health & Fitness (paid) charts on the French App Store.

No ads. No team. No paid promotion.
Just a cat. And a quiet mission.

I started StressLess as a way to track my own stress and emotions, to breathe a little easier, and to have something soft to hold onto — emotionally and literally (yes, the app has a cat companion that grows with you 🐱).

Now it’s in the charts alongside apps I used to admire from a distance.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  • Mental health products don’t have to be clinical. They can be warm, emotional, even a little silly.

  • Building in public helped me stay connected to why I started.

  • Localization (FR, ES, JP) brought in way more love than I expected.

If you’re building something small but meaningful:
Keep going.
Your people are out there.

If you’ve launched a product rooted in personal experience, I’d love to hear your story. 💬

Let’s keep building things that heal — not just scale.

June 4, 2025 ❤️ Mental Health Is Personal — But Building in Public Helped Me Stay Grounded

A while back, I hit a wall.
The kind that doesn’t just drain your energy — it quietly takes your joy, clarity, and drive with it.

I was burned out.

What started as "just stress" at work slowly became emotional exhaustion. I lost touch with my routine, my focus, and honestly, with myself.
At some point, I stopped trying to fix it and started listening instead.

That’s when I began building StressLess — not for users, not for a launch, but for me.

A tiny app to track how I felt.
To reflect.
To breathe.
To make sense of the mess inside my mind — and maybe feel just 1% better.

I never expected it to grow. But sharing little progress updates publicly — first as accountability, then as quiet therapy — turned into something I didn’t anticipate:

Connection.

People started messaging me.
Some shared they’d been feeling the same. Others just said “thank you for saying this out loud.”
A few asked if they could try the app. I hadn’t even planned a beta.

Now it’s live, translated into 4 languages, and has features I never imagined adding.
(Yes, there’s a cat companion that grows with you — because healing doesn’t have to be clinical.)

And through it all, building in public helped me stay grounded — not in vanity metrics or launch charts, but in why I started this at all.

If you’ve ever built something personal…
How do you stay connected to the why?
What keeps you going when growth feels slow, or quiet?

Not everything we create needs to be “the next big thing.”
Sometimes it just needs to matter.

I'd love to hear what motivates you — beyond numbers. 🙏

Excellent work on the development of your app! One thing that can be motivated for people dealing with stress is also to look externally-how the stress in their life affects those around them. The idea of the cat companion could give users the vision that their journey to peace is also benefitting others-with this cat being a representation of that.

One question, is there a 'regression' for the cat if the user stops using the app and isn't demonstrating any level of commitment/progress? Of course, progress in this area is difficult to measure as everyone is different-but just ignoring it or reverting to their normal stress-filled standard of living. Things like notifications that 'your cat is starving!' or '*cat name* is neglected. He/she needs you! Take a minute to check in'.

Also, something for the future may be a widget option that can be integrated into the iPhone that makes the app a bit more visible and accessible. Perhaps premium users could customize the icon/widget with their cat?

One other random thought I had was if the cat had a 'listening mode'. I know it sounds silly, but if there was an option where the person can talk to the cat as a silent, attentive listener as they unpack the amount of stress they're carrying?

    Anyway, great job!

    1. 1

Thank you so much for this incredibly thoughtful feedback, it truly means a lot! 🙏

I really love how you framed the idea of the cat as a symbol not just of self-care, but of how our emotional state impacts those around us. That external reflection that our calm benefits others is powerful, and aligns beautifully with the vision behind StressLess.

      As for your question:
Currently, the cat doesn’t regress or "suffer" if the app isn’t used I wanted to avoid adding guilt or pressure, especially for users already feeling overwhelmed. But your point about soft, emotional nudges like "[cat name] misses you…" or "Your cat feels distant today" could be a more empathetic way to re-engage users without making them feel judged. I’m definitely going to explore that balance further. 🙌

Widgets and customization are absolutely on the roadmap! I’m especially excited about the idea of premium cat styles, naming your companion, and even placing a little live widget on your home screen to bring a moment of calm to your day.

And I love the idea of a “listening mode.” Not silly at all sometimes we just need to talk, even if no one’s replying. A quiet, non-judgmental space where the cat simply “sits with you” could be incredibly comforting. Maybe it starts as a voice note journal feature with light animations of the cat listening? That has real emotional potential.

Thank you again for the encouragement and the ideas. It’s feedback like this that helps shape StressLess into something truly meaningful. If you have more thoughts, I’m all ears (and so is the cat 😸)!

About

I created StressLess because I needed it myself. Like many people, I was constantly stressed but rarely aware of how much it was affecting me — until it started spilling over into my focus, sleep, and energy.
